"Track Review: Sparrow House - Blindfold Waltz"

[Van Fleet] has a knack for smart, inventive, but ultimately classical pop-rock composition A sturdy and elegant pop artifact a high regard for musicological history. - Pitchfork

"Sparrow House"

This is as good as home recordings get. - The Austin Chronicle

"Stereogum Does CMJ"

Gorgeous, hushed tones... - Stereogum

"Sparrow House"

Van Fleet somehow finds a way to pack an album’s worth of emotions into one, bite-sized morsel of a song, which leaves listeners (like myself) begging for more, which is perfect, since”Heart Flood” introduces listeners to the rest of Falls, an almost flawless 19:26 of music. - All Things Go

"sparrow house: falls"

Of the hundreds of artists I’ve written about since starting this blog nearly two years ago, I can safely say that no song has gotten quite the reaction that Sparrow House’s “When I Am Gone” received when we originally posted it in January of this year. Tons of people emailed asking where/how they could hear more of Jared Van Fleet’s (also of Voxtrot) beautifully understated, impossibly melodic, and deceptively complex pop songs. - Gorilla Vs. Bear

Bio

Jared Van Fleet is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist originally from Austin, TX.

He began his career as a member of blog-buzzed indie band Voxtrot, performing as a keyboardist and guitarist, and writing orchestral arrangements for the group's records. In early 2007, Van Fleet released his own six-song EP, entitled "Falls", under the name Sparrow House. It was met with critical acclaim from indie publications such as Pitchfork and Gorilla Vs. Bear, and although Voxtrot's schedule did not allow time for a solo tour, he managed to perform at a few select concerts with artists such as Beirut, Jose Gonzalez and St. Vincent.

In late 2007, after several years of intense touring, Van Fleet took a long break from the music industry, leaving Voxtrot and suspending indefinitely his solo work. During this time, while he withdrew from public performance and did not release any music, he did continue traveling and writing, splitting his time between Texas, France, and Spain.

Van Fleet eventually settled in Brooklyn, NY, in late 2009, and slowly became interested once again in recording and performing. In 2010 he reunited with Voxtrot for their farewell US tour, and soon afterwards, joined Beirut as a pianist for performances at the Guggenheim in New York, and a summer festival tour in Europe.

In 2011, Van Fleet is returning to release a second EP as Sparrow House, and is also busy preparing a full-length debut under his own name.
