"Toledo City Paper"

“JWC is a one-man music machine. Armed with just his guitar, a harmonica and his voice, JWC has fearlessly dominated just about every stage he’s been on. Bursting with emotion, passion and indignation, he takes Neil Young’s “Harvest” era folk and rocks it with a modern twist.” - Toledo City Paper

"Cory Branan & JWC"

"…Local JWC, a.k.a. Jesse Carlson, brings only his guitar and his passion for music on stage. A flurry of technical and emotional build-ups and break-downs and an exploration of the beauty of dissonance and odd-tuning structures, JWC’s music transforms common folk into the fantastic." - Toledo City Paper

"The Championship w/ The Homeville Circle"

“Rounding out the show is Michigan’s solo singer-songwriter JWC, notable for airplay on 89X, who’ll showcase a few old favorites but otherwise debut a revamped, more stripped-down, countrified pop sound.” - Toledo City Paper

Bio

The first born son of two cross country truckers, Jesse Wingate Carlson was raised in the city of Toledo, Ohio and then the small farm town of Ida, Michigan. Impacted by music at an early age, Jesse recalls being a young child sitting in front of his parents’ tweed face speakers while the guitars vibrated in his ears and drums shook his chest. The smell of the vinyl and the hiss of the needle were intoxicating. At that point it became clear, he was born to run. His parent’s love of The Cars, Emmylou Harris, The Boss, Bob Dylan and Neil Young shaped his musical future.

At the young age of eight Jesse’s dad bought him his first acoustic guitar. At age fourteen it became electric. When he was sixteen he purchased his first harmonica. Soon after Jesse started writing his own songs and there was no turning back. Jesse spent many years genre surfing through everything from ska to metal. It wasn’t until his early twenties that Jesse found his true voice in Americana/Country music. After years of playing solo acoustic folk/rock music, Jesse found Hank Williams Sr. and finally saw the light.

With a powerful presence and a unique voice, J.W. Carlson has dominated many stages in the Toledo, Detroit, and the Ann Arbor areas. Under the incarnation J.W.C., he was featured as a spotlight artist on 89X Radio’s Homeboy Show. He opened for Johnny Cash’s legendary band “The Tennessee Three” with a memorable and eclipsing performance. Driven by a true passion for music, J.W. Carlson’s main focus has been to become the best singer/songwriter/performer possible. With a will do, with or without you attitude, J.W. Carlson is at the beginning of a long and momentous musical journey.
