Kah

 London, England, GBR
BandAlternativeSinger/Songwriter

I am a one woman combination of poetry and electronics; like Sylvia Plath meets Goldfrapp! I create every layer of every one of my songs myself, then I take them out on to the stage and bring them alive with poetical introductions. My music and my live show are intense, surprising and unique.

Biography

My name is Kah.

I write songs and I sing them, record them and produce them.

I do this in my bedroom in a tiny corner of London.

I write all the melodies, lyrics, beats and sings all the vocals.
I perform and create every layer on every instrument and then produce the songs myself.

I do all of this using a simple combination of a Macbook, a mic, a keyboard, Logic pro, Absynth and a lot of coffee.

I like to take my Macbook out gigging with a Kaoss Pad and a whole host of effects pedals. I like to surprise people by introducing my electronic music with poetry, which is often written fresh for each performance but is always written as a specific way into each song I perform.

That is how I write and perform my songs.

But this ... this is how it feels when I writing and performing them:

Sometimes it’s like making breakfast; beats like toast, hooks like butter, vocals like honey.

Sometimes it’s like blowing bubbles. Off they go in their four minute worlds. Simple. Pop.

Sometimes it’s like taking a photograph. The capturing of something elusive.

Sometimes it’s like trying to align the stars. Somehow holding together with music a place and a story so I can set free the emotions that go with them.

Sometimes it's like travelling. Taking myself off and unpacking my suitcase of vocals in different atmospheres and environments. I like each song to be different. To have it's own unique air.

Sometimes it’s like reading under the covers by torchlight. Like time no longer exists and all that exists is that one little beat I am trying to get right or that one note the violin is playing that doesn’t quite sit with the cello. I am a little girl lost in a forest of details.

Sometimes it’s like living on a tiny electronic desert island in my bedroom. I go mad with it. I am a one woman band, the leader of my own orchestra, the conductor of my own choir, an eight limbed drumming god. It can get a bit like that bit in Pirates of the Caribbean where they drink all the rum and dance on the beach.

In my songs are my dreams. In my dreams are my songs. I simply could not live without them and by taking them out to gigs, they can live and breathe too.

Back Seat Driver

Written By: Kah

Me, I'm quite happy to be
in the back seat for a year or two.
I know now i can't take on this town
I want to duck out from under the pressure to be and do

There's no one that I'll have to answer to,
Once i surrender it all to you.
You'll run the risk, run the race, run the red lights...
You'll run the show.

There's nowhere i gotta be getting to,
no a to b i'm just passing through.
You'll take the wheel, take the reins, take the corners .. but not too slow.
When you say ... go

Staying still, well that's all very well,
but there's some need in me that's not met by the world i know.
So all those friends who thought i'd settled down
well i'll wave goodbye to them all through your back window.

There's no one that i'll have to answer to,
once i surrender it all to you.
You'll be the one who'll make up all the rules,
You'll make up my mind

There's nowhere i gotta be getting to,
No a to b i'm just passing through,
I'll stop constantly searching for things i can't find...
and i'll never love anything that i can't leave behind,

No i'll never love anything that i can't leave behind.

No way, no way, i'll stop

Fugitive

Written By: Kah

Undercover of night,
I slip past your windows,
I slip through your streets
and I sing,
once i’m out of sight...
I’m a hound on the scent,
I’m an owl on the wing.
I’m unshakeable, untraceable...
I’ll take what i can though i know
you have nothing to give.
No it’s not love;
it’s just the way
we play
fugitive.

No it’s not love it’s just the way that we play;
I only like it when it tears me apart.
You only like it when i push you away;
yes you’re a sucker for this cheap kind of art.

No it’s not love it’s just the way that we play;
You only like it when it tears you apart.
I only like it when you push me away;
yes i’m a sucker for this cheap kind of art.

Though you might pin me down i can’t give you up,
though i slip and fall still i just can’t stop burning stop freezing stop crawling back to your arms and

though you might turn me loose still I play it tough,
though i slip and slide i can’t get enough heat enough cold enough crawling back to your arms and

No it’s not love it’s just the way that we play;
I only like it when it tears me apart.
You only like it when i push you away;
yes you’re a sucker for this cheap kind of art.

No it’s not love it’s just the way that we play;
You only like it when it tears you apart.
I only like it when you push me away;
yes i’m a sucker for this cheap kind of art.

I’m untraceable, unshakeable...
I’ll take what i can though i know
you have nothing to give.
No it’s not love
it’s just the way
we play
fugitive.

Goose Girl

Written By: Kah

Ageless lakes,
Restless seas,
I live in time with the tides.

Cool mud flats
calm my feet.
My stomach aches for the skies.

They winter it out
at the back of my house
but i don’t understand their cries.

and it’s spring,
and the geese are leaving,
bye bye, bye bye.

He tears me up.
He shouts me down.
Is it so hard to be a man?

I tie my scarf
around my head;
I go out, I grab what space I can.

I’ve never loved him.
I’ve never known him.
I don’t understand his cries.

But at least
the geese are leaving,
bye bye, bye bye.

When I've gone from here
they will remember;
this roof lives in their breasts.

One autumn morning
they’ll feel it calling.
They’ll return from their nests.

In my tiny misery
I seek their sanctuary.
I raise up my eyes...

and I see
the geese are leaving,
bye bye, bye bye.

bye bye, bye bye.

Wanting to be Haunted

Written By: Kah

Getting tired of meeting ghosts of you,

tired of missing all that I'd got used to.

Though I just believe in what I see

still I wish you'd try to convince me...

Looking for your eyes in new faces

just reminds me how misplaced my love is;

though I give it all to someone else

still I'm proving nothing to myself

and I … I wish you'd walk in through my walls and tell me what to do

coz I… I try to reach for him but feel my hands go right through you...

... right through you

I'm just wanting to be haunted,

wanting to be shaken from my bed.

Just wanting to be haunted,

I'm watching curtains twitching in my head.

Memories of you stop me in the street

and I forget the day, the month, the week.

I'm held fast by all i remember;

details of how we fitted together.

And to prove that I can't let you be,

I've taught him all your ways of touching me.

Keeping him from what I know is true;

that what I see in him is only you.

and I … I wish you'd walk back in here, give me something real to hold

coz I… I try to warm the rooms I share with him but they stay cold...

...they stay cold

I'm just wanting to be haunted,

wanting to be shaken from my bed.

Just wanting to be haunted,

I'm watching curtains twitching in my head.

July Song

Written By: Kah

All the birds in the trees,

they are singing

-it’s alright, it’s alright

All the books that i read,

they are saying

-it’s alright, it’s alright

I open my mouth;

I am breathing

-I’m alright, I’m alright

I see my legs and my arms;

I am moving

-I’m alright, I’m alright

i am moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I'm gonna live in my July song.

Moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I’m gonna live in my July song.

All the people I've hurt, all the things I’ve done wrong

don’t exist in my July song.

I’m moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I’m gonna live in my July song.

yeah yeah yeah

Oh the wind in the trees

it is singing

-it’s alright, it’s alright

and the words on the breeze

they are saying

-it’s alright, it’s alright

I’m not drowning; I am waving,

I’m not falling; I am flying.

I don’t stumble when I’m running

to live in my July song.

Moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I'm gonna live in my July song.

Moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I’m gonna live in my July song.

All the people I’ve hurt, all the things I’ve done wrong

don’t exist in my July song.

I’m moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I’m gonna live in my July song.

There’s no place in this song for the blues.

There’s no place in this song for your bad muse.

There’s no place in this song for wheres and whys

I’ve a place in the sun...

I’m at peace with my life.

I’m moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I’m gonna live in my July song.

Moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I’m gonna live in my July song.

All the people I’ve hurt, all the things I’ve done wrong

don’t exist in my July song.

I’m moving into the sun, moving into the sun...

I’m gonna live in my July song,

my July song...

my July song...

yeah yeah yeah

Kite

Written By: Kah

Extraordinary weather we've been having,

extraordinary feelings in my soul.

Making me do extraordinary things like call you up...

though I know I should never call you up.

But I call you up to tell you of a dream i had;

you were driving me around a mountain track.

The bonnet pushing up and into clouds,

the hairpin bends ... our hearts were in our mouths...

...stop the car, I said, please stop the car.

I have to kiss you.

The extraordinary view,

The nape of your neck,

My hands in your hair;

your hair the colour of sunset ...

and I never wanted to wake up.

I never wanted to wake up.

But I'm earthbound,

my feet are in the clay.

I'm earthbound my love,

I never wanted it to be this way.

Extraordinary weather we've been having,

extraordinary feelings in my soul.

Making me do extraordinary things like write a love song...

though I don't know how I could ever pin us down.

But I just have to start with how this feels...

arms open wide we're flying over fields.

I hold on to your coat like a kite,

yet I'm not quite in control ... not quite ... not quite...

... change my life, I said, I'll change my life.

I have to be with you.

The extraordinary view,

The world stretched out below,

Put your heart on a string;

just love me and let go...

and I won't let you down.

I won't let our kite come down,

no, I won't let our kite come down.

Just love me and let go.

Love me and let go.

Architect

Written By: Kah (Rebecca Le Marchand)

You and me -
We’re drawing a house by the sea,
Line by line,
Delicately.

It has a stair that goes up to the moon.
Each day we add another room,
and we go round and round the house,
round and round and round and round the house ... singing

You’re an architect ... of the infinite.
Little architect ... of the intimate.

You and me -
We’ll build an invisible city,
Piece by piece,
Deliberately.

It will have a tower that will never fall;
It will stay utterly beautiful,
and we’ll ride up and down the streets,
up and down and all around the streets ... singing

You’re an architect ... of the intimate.
Little architect ... of the infinite.

Do you see,
Do you see -
the way things join up
So perfectly.

The plane flies overhead.
The plane flies overhead.

We are lucky.
We are lucky.

Discography

My debut album "More than Dawn" was released in June 2010. It was recently named as one of the best albums of 2010 by IndieLondon magazine and sits proudly on their list (thanks to the perks of alphabetical order) just above Kanye West!

Over half the songs from the album have already received press attention and radio airplay.

The song 'Fugitive' was played on Radio Eins in Germany and twice by Tom Robinson on BBC Radio 6Music. It was also selected by him as one of the best tracks submitted to the show this year and featured on the 'Best of BBC 6Music Introducing Mixtape' which was available as a podcast from the BBC for three months from June to September 2010.

The song 'Back Seat Driver' has just been chosen to be featured on the Delta Airlines/Noise Pop Indie Music channel and will be available on all Delta Airlines flights worldwide throughout February 2011. 'Back Seat Driver' also received the rare accolade of being named a 'Song of the Day' on Popjustice.com, sandwiched between The Killers and Ladyhawke. Along with it's inclusion on the album it was also chosen for release as a special limited edition 7" vinyl single by the independent label Random Acts of Vinyl.

The song "Goose Girl" was single of the week on IndieLondon and has been played on the BBC Introducing show on Radio Kent, on Gill Mills' Best of Myspace Podcast, Recharged Radio, Spark Radio for the North East UK, Radio Ireland, Radio Tees, the British Forces Network and has been included in various independent podcasts in Italy, Portugal, Spain, France and Scandinavia.

'July Song' was played on Recharged Radio, the British Forces Network and on the WFUV Vin Scelsa show Idiot's Delight in New York. It was also selected for inclusion on the October 2010 daily playlist for California based internet station 'Women's Radio.'

'Wanting to be Haunted' has been played on BBC Radio Kent Introducing, on the Roots show for Radio Eins in Germany and twice selected by Arash Torabi for the 24/7 music show on the internet and in the South West UK.

Nearly every song from the album has been singled out for special attention in the music press. It seems everyone has their own, and often a different, favourite track. The album itself is now the recipient of some exceptional reviews in the press including a 5/5 from IndieLondon, a 5/5 from Entertainment Focus and a 10/10 from Tasty Fanzine. These reviews can be accessed from my press page.

In 2009 I was commissioned to contribute a cover of any song from the 80's for Buffetliber DJ's Rewind project. My electro cover of "Dancing in the Dark" by Bruce Springsteen sits alongside covers by Little Boots, Dragonette and Au Revoir Simone. It was played on WFUV's 'The Alternate Side' show in New York in the summer of 2010 and continues to be downloaded regularly from various sources on the internet.

As a result of my album, my single airplay and my live sets for Recharged Radio I was nominated as one of their best female artists of 2010.

I continue to grow and my music continues to get better and better. Watch this space!

Set List

I perform all my songs myself with keyboard, laptop, KaossPad and vocal effects. I bring my own stand for my equipment and require just a small space, a 1/4 jack line in for the KaossPad, two 1/4 jack lines for the laptop adaptor and four electrical sockets. The keyboard plays a software synth via the computer so doesn't require its own line in.

My sets can be anything from three to eight plus tracks, depending on what is required. I read poetical introductions to each piece I perform, including any covers.

A typical four song set would usually start with an interesting mid-paced track like "Wanting to be Haunted". It would include a faster track like "Back Seat Driver" if that was appropriate. It would also include a slower track like "Goose Girl" and usually a cover such as "Dancing in the Dark" which always surprises people and goes down really well live.
