"KAHULANUI Hawaiian Swing Band - Aloha & Mahalo Tour"

KAHULANUI HAWAIIAN SWING BAND
ALOHA & MAHALO TOUR

Aloha to supporters and contributors,

The band “Kahulanui” is an organization that is dedicated to promoting Hawaiian Swing and Jazz music from the 1920s through the 1950s. Its’ Founder and Visionary, Lena Naipo, considers music a world language where we can all communicate. Through fundraising events, performances and activities, Kahulanuis’ mission is to inspire people to value and discover Hawaiian Swing and Jazz music as a resource to strengthen the educational and social vitality of Hawaiian communities, cultural organizations and individuals.
Kahulanuis’ accomplishments thus far include a Grammy Nomination in 2014 in the Regional Roots Category, 3 Hawaiian Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominations in 2013 and was chosen 1 of 12 worldwide bands to perform in New York for the 2015 global music fest, commonly known as GlobalFest. Kahulanui also performed at The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and the Veterans Hospital on Long Island, N.Y. for our dedicated service men and women. On our tour in 2015 Kahulanui will feature workshops and seminars focusing on Hawaiian Style Swing and Jazz music with its’ instrumentation of vocals, Hawaiian steel guitar, ukulele, guitar, bass, drums and a 4 piece horn section consisting of a tenor sax, alto sax, trombone and trumpet. A brief analysis of Hawaiian Style Swing and Jazz music will be discussed in terms of melody, harmony, counterpoint, tempo, rhythm and orchestration. When traveling with our hula dancer or dancers they will also participate in sharing their knowledge and interpretation of how hula played a role in Hawaiian Style Swing and Jazz Music.
This July 2015, Kahulanui will be on tour for 26 days under the Herschel Freeman Music Agency. A renowned music agent of 25+ years who is committed to the worlds cultured music industry. He feels Kahulanui is a new and exciting Hawaiian group out of Hawaii Island with a unique style of Hawaiian Swing and Jazz Music which will open new doors in the Hawaiian music market. The tour which consists of 6 U.S. states and 9 cities and counties will showcase Kahulanuis’ unique style. The venues are the most sought out performing stages in the world music community. The festivals and events can attract attendance of 5,000 to 10,000 or more, world music lovers.

Kahulanui is seeking individuals and corporate sponsors for our mission. We are not a non-profit organization. Kahulanuis’ goal is to break into the world music market for Hawaiian music education and most importantly, to teach and keep this genre of Hawaiian music alive! In the history of Hawaiian Swing and Jazz Music you will find it gained its’ popularity through movies and Hawaiian themed clubs throughout the U.S. during the 1930’s through 1950’s. It was a hard sale then for our Hawaiian musicians to make it and today is no different. In fact, maybe even harder now because of higher airfares, lodging, ground transportation and miscellaneous costs. Kahulanui is willing to open and share our cost and financial profit margins with our sponsors and contributors. Kahulanuis’ sincerity, dedication and sacrifice will show our love for the music more than the profitability of the mission at hand. It takes Kahulanuis’ 9 diversely talented musicians, a hula dancer and digital media person to recreate this Hawaiian Swing and Jazz Music concept.

"KAHULANUI - Aloha & Mahalo Tour"

KAHULANUI TOUR PRESENTATION

Kahulanui will receive an estimated amount of $52,500.00 for performances while on tour. The total amount of expenditures for the Kahulanui Aloha & Mahalo Tour Mission is $54,746.91. As you can see we stand at a deficit of $2,246.91. But with your support these deficits can be turned into a wining situation for Hawaii Island and the State of Hawaii.
I’ve worked for many agents and agencies in a span of 30 + years and have never found an agent that was committed to the worlds cultured music scene as Herschel Freeman of the Herschel Freeman Agency. The commitment starts with respect for the culture, then the music, its origin and most importantly the people! Herschel has been the most honest music agent I’ve ever worked with! He has diligently tried to introduce Kahulanui to various cultural music venues. Due to lack of financial support, Kahulanui had no choice but to cancel events at the largest festivals in the US. Bangor Main, Earth Day Festival, the West Virginia Folk Festival and the South Carolina Music Fest 2015 were all omitted. By gaining your support Kahulanui would be able to reach out to more festivals as these that were passed over.
We can help teach, share and promote Hawaii through our music and diversified knowledge of sales, media and motivating instructional backgrounds. This would be a key tool in putting together a sales promotional team for Hawaiis’ tourist industry.
Lena Naipo - Background in sales and promotions for 10+ years with Hawaiian Airlines. He has worked closely with Debbie Nakanelua-Richards, Hawaiian airlines Director-Community Relations during the mid-1980s.
Pat Eskildsen - Co-owner of a lighting, stage and media company. His company does media programs which assist in power point presentations as well as stage decor and lighting enhancement.
Bill Noble - Master degree in music / high school music instructor and group coordinator for Kahulanui
Jesse Snyder – Motivational speaker / music coordinator
Dwight Tokumoto – Professor of Psychology / music instructor for after school programs
Tim Taylor – Degree in Finance and Accounting
Duke Tatom – Sales & Marketing
Vince D’Angelo – presently attending courses at the University of Hawaii majoring in Medical Science
Josh Timmons – Music major at University of Hawaii / mathematician
These are the traits of each individual member and their capacity of what they can bring to the table in creating the finest sales and promotion team to represent Hawaii Island and the State. We would create new and exciting ways to promote Hawaii.
How you may ask? The tour will bring awareness about Hawaiis’ finest points! Our beautiful beaches on Maui, the lush valleys of Waipio on Hawaii Island or Hanalei, Kauai, our live volcanoes to the oldest mountain range, the Ko’olaus on Oahu. But, most of all the people who make Hawaii truly what Hawaii is! Tens of thousands will attend these events where workshops will be offered along with our performances. Kahulanui would display promotional materials and power point sales presentations on the behalf of HVB, Hilton Corporation, United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Big Island Candies, Kings Shops Waikoloa, Puu O Kumau Ranch, Ritz Carton Kapalua, The Queens Marketplace Waikoloa, Four Season Hualalai, The Westin Moana Surfrider/Corporation, Outrigger Corporation, The Shops at Mauna Lani, Mauna Lani Resorts and any other Hawaii businesses and corporations. What better way to promote such a unique place like Hawaii and the things we offer like our culture, music and dances of these islands.
It is the mission of Kahulanui to bring back to life the music of the swing era of Hawaiis’ past that made the roaring 1920s through the 1940s a special time in the Sandwich Isles! We will share this piece of Hawaii with not only our potential visitors but our locals who moved with their families to make a better life for themselves and for those who had no choice but to move because of the high cost of living in Hawaii. Our goal is to share and offer our makana (gift) of music, dance and knowledge and maybe giving them some thoughts of coming back home to Hawaii!
Kahulanui would like to send out our mahalo & aloha for all who have believed in us and have supported our ventures. We hope that our new concept in promoting Hawaii under a subcontractor Hawaii Promotional team will entice some of our local businesses and corporations to help build a new and exciting business in and for Hawaii!

Bio

Inspiration for Kahulanui’s swing era sound came from Ray Kinney’s “Ana Lani”, a 1941 musical short (available on YouTube).  Kinney (1900-1972) was a Hawaiian singer, musician, composer, orchestra leader, and performer.  He also boasted a four year stint as Orchestra Leader in the prestigious Hawaiian Room of New York's Hotel Lexington beginning in 1938.  Kinney composed many songs during his career including the well-known "Hawaiian Hospitality."

Since its 2011 inception, Kahulanui has made every effort to bring to light Hawaiian grown talent and musicians and pulled out all the stops in re-familiarizing our music industry with the swing era.

With help from Palm Records, Kahulanui (translation: The Big Dance) was introduced to Hawai’i in 2011 with the release of their first album “Hula Ku’i”.  This CD garnered the gang three Na Hoku Hanohano Award nominations in 2012 in Album of the Year, Group of the Year and Most Promising Artist(s) categories.  In 2014 “Hula Ku’i” commanded a Grammy Award nomination in the Regional Roots category, which brought exposure and limelight to their efforts to bring back that Kinney-like Hawaiian Swing sound.  Along with this exposure came the invitation to be 1 of 12 groups worldwide to be summoned to perform at the prestigious 2015 GlobalFest World Music showcase in New York City.
