Pape Mbaye, master drummer and percussionist, leads this group of incredible musicians for you to experience the vibrancy and warm traditions of Senegal in this unique evening of drum and dance. All of the guys are from respected, and well known Griot families in Senegal. All have een making these sounds since birth. You will be enthralled, and mesmerised by them all.
Pape Mbaye, the leader of this infectious African drumming experience is what the Senegalese call “a griot.” That means he's the village storyteller, the guardian of Senegal's oral and music traditions, a lineage that traces it roots back 800 years. For two and a half decades, Mbaye was not only the keeper of the history, the legends and the music for this fishing village 20 minutes or so from Dakar, but he was its head drummer. This was the mantle of his father, and is passed down from through the male line, Thiass, his brother took over as head drummer when Pape migrated to Australia. Yacou, Pape's son is a dynamic young drummer, rapidly building a name for himself in Sydney. Lamine Sonko is from a preimienet dance family. His father, Bouly is the director of the Le Ballet National du Senegal. and his mother was its first solo dancer. He, like Pape has perfomed internationally alongside artists such as Youssou Ndour, Ringo Starr, BB King to but a few. Fode Mane is a wonderfully rich dancer in the Diola tradition, his family too are internationally acclaimed dancers.
