Kala Hawker

Kala Hawker was born and raised in Harlem, New York in the 1990’s. At the age of two she studied piano and later violin and guitar. By the age of ten she became captivated by the rhythm of the guitar and shortly thereafter began to effortlessly sing and write her own lyrics. While attending middle school Kala could be found performing her own songs behind an acoustic guitar at various venues in Manhattan. Kala’s lyrics speak out words of wisdom, encouraging listeners to triumph when life is at its worse. She expresses understanding of the everyday struggles of ordinary folks. Kala’s music will bring your emotions to the surface, make you think deeply about her message, have you reminiscing on experiences that impacted your life the most and make you think about your past, present and future. Her story telling will capture your imagination, bring tears to your eyes, and as she pulls the soul out of her folk music you will sigh with relief. Kala’s songs have multiple messages taking listeners on a journey to a place that they would rather be. This versatile young artist attracts the young, middle and old with her unique lyrics that gives something to everyone whether that’s, hope, courage, triumph, truth or honesty. In High School, she was chosen twice as a Rising Star cast member and in 2008 was a recipient of the Godin Guitar Scholarship Award and spent a summer studying Jazz Guitar at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Kala was also a winner of the 2008 Torch Music Fest. Kala’s music is influenced by her extensive international travel experiences and she continues to evolve as a vocalist, guitarist and songwriter.
