INSPIRATION
How long have you been writing songs?
Almost since I can remember, but the very first song I ever completed was in 1985, called A LITTLE SANTA. I'm planning to put out a Christmas CD in the next couple of years.
How many songs have you written?
About a hundred, but many of them are still works in progress. I use a fantastic program called MasterWriter and when I first got it I started to collect everything I had written from the word processor I was using to the trunks and drawers, notebooks, filing cabinets and closets. I still find songs and bits of songs and notes all the time and I'm amazed at how much content I actually have, I was stunned, literally.
When did you first believe you could write songs?
In 1994, when I was writing another Christmas song called HER FIRST CHRISTMAS I woke up at 4:00 in the morning and got the second verse that I had been struggling to come up with, I was so amazed that it came so easily and fit the song so well.
What inspires you to write?
A kiss, a sign, a circumstance, anything that rings a bell and has a sweet sound to it. I wrote HEAVEN'S GONNA BLESS US in about twenty five minutes. I was inspired by a friend's son who was about to get married. What inspired me the most was that they were going to save their first kiss for their wedding. How beautiful is that?
How do you write, do you have a format?
Sometimes I start with just one line and then build it from there. I like taking artistic liberty when I create for instance (here's a lesson in song writing)
I was driving down the street and I saw a huge yellow bow tied to a telephone pole in front of a house, so I wrote the line: 'And I tied yellow ribbons round every tree in the yard.' That's still one of my favorite lines in the song I WANT MY SOLDIER TO COME HOME, I also wanted to keep it more generic to the ear and heart of the listener by saying 'MY SOLDIER' each time instead of saying 'him' because when the listener hears the song I wanted them to think of their soldier, I wanted them to think of themselves as the first person and about the soldier that could be their daughter or sister or father.
While I was traveling through Texas I saw one of those big black billboards' with huge white letters that said NEITHER DO I CONDEMN THEE and I wrote it down (I'm an avid note taker!) I kept thinking about that line, and since I knew the biblical account of where it came from I put the pieces together like a puzzle. There where some elements that I was trying to incorporate into the song and I couldn't quite fit them until one night when I was almost asleep I heard what became the bridge, I quickly wrote it all down (in the dark!!!) so I wouldn't forget, then the next night when I started working on the song I got that piece of paper and as I read it I couldn't believe it, it fit perfectly and each of the lines I was playing around with got in.
Where do you usually write?
I love to sing and drive, I just keep repeating the line until I remember it and then that is when I can add to it and start forming it all together. I had been working on YESTERDAY'S MAKEUP for a few months and one afternoon soon after leaving a friends', I just started singing what sounded like what could be the chorus, it sounded a little odd to me at first but I thought that's okay the melody's right and I can tweak it, so I pulled over and quickly jotted it down.
Sometimes I work with ideas while I'm walking on the treadmill. I've started playing guitar and so now I'm writing with songs my guitar.
