"Young Fiddlers Take Stage"

At just 14 years of age, Kalissa Hernandez is also receiving recognition for her hard work. She is the current, and youngest, B.C. Provincial Fiddle Champion. Last year she was the B.C. Provincial Open Fiddle Champion and she represented British Columbia in the Junior Showcase at the National Fiddle Contest in Ottawa.

Kalissa has won many awards for her classical violin playing and is also an accomplished Ottawa Valley Step Dancer.

Ivonne and Kalissa Hernandez are the current B.C. Twin Fiddle Champions.

The pair perform on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 11:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. at the Centennial building, the main venue for the weekend's event that includes a full lineup of entertainment and favorites like fresh maple sugar cooled in snow.

Bio

At 20 years old, Victoria BC’s Kalissa Hernandez has received much recognition for her hard work both performing and competing. When she was 12 years old, she made fiddle history by being the youngest person ever to win the title of BC Provincial Fiddle Champion where all her fellow competitors were adults. Kalissa has been invited four times to represent BC at the Canadian Grand Masters (National Fiddle Competition), in Ottawa. She has toured extensively throughout North America, and performed at various Folk Festivals across Canada, both fiddling and stepdancing. She has just released her solo debut album, Later Than Last, and will be touring with it locally and internationally (to the UK). She plays a variety of fiddle styles including Irish, Old Time Canadian, Texas Swing, Celtic, and Metis. Kalissa is a sought after fiddle instructor for camps and workshops. Her performances bring audiences to their feed dancing, for an unforgettable show that you won’t want to miss!
