Bio

KAREEN CLARKE

Kareen Clarke’s story is one of sincerity, passion and absolute truth.
The cornerstone of her career is her faith; and it is also this faith which motivates her to move others with her music.

With humble beginnings as an insatiable desire to sing, Kareen’s early performances can be traced to the Nazarene Church in St.George, Barbados. Her soulful worship experiences led her to the RICHARD STOUTE TEEN TALENT contest, where she captured first place in her preliminary and fourth in the finals in 1993. This was only the start of a journey which trails a blaze on any stage that she performs.

Making noticeable transition from adolescence to adulthood, Kareen won Barbados’ Queen of Song title in 1994, while continuing to mesmerize audiences in hotels and nightclubs across Barbados with the band XZIBIT ONE. Kareen is not only a singer……she is a captivating performer.

It was only two years later, when the eyes of the Region became focused on Kareen as she walked away not only with first prize for the Barbados Song Festival but also first prize for the Caribbean Song Festival with her self-penned “CARIBBEAN UNITY”. Even the Prime Minister of Barbados, the Honorable Owen Arthur heaped accolades on her as a woman of the vanguard of the music industry.

In the same year, Kareen graced the stage performing the theatrical presentation of INKLE AND YARICO and was accompanied by Arturo Tappin who has shared the limelight with Luther Vandross, Roberta Flack and other international headlines. Kareen and Arturo teamed up for the performance during Holders Season in Barbados. At this time, she assumed the position of co-lead vocalist for one of Barbados’ top bands, KROSFYAH during that period.

But the moment of truth had only just arrived, for 1999 saw Kareen finding her own truth, when she recommitted her life to Jesus Christ. This was an obvious turning point in her career and indeed propelled her to a higher level of inspiration.

In 2000, she formed the all-female group SHEKINAH EXODUS, which was awarded the FLAME GOSPEL AWARDS’ VOCAL GROUP OF THE YEAR in 2001. At the same time, Kareen secured a broadcasting post with Barbados’ leading gospel station, GOSPEL 790 AM and became the Musical Director and Worship Leader at the New Covenant Word Centre now The Light Word Centre. She also worked with Grammy-Award nominee, NICHOLAS BRANKER on a National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) gala project, one of Barbados’ Annual Cultural Highlights.

Between 2002 and 2005 Kareen has been nominated four and two times respectively for the FLAME GOSPEL AWARDS, FEMALE VOCALIST OF THE YEAR AND WORSHIP LEADER OF THE YEAR, meanwhile producing a remake of Alicia Keys’ “IF I AIN’T GOT YOU” and Josh Groban’s “YOU RAISE ME UP”. She also wrote, composed and co-arranged “AWESOME LOVE” and “I’M RUNNING TO YOU” based on Psalm 139.

She compiled these works onto one album called “First Fruit”- a most appropriate double entendre, this being her first compilation and she being her parents’ firstborn.

In 2005, Kareen won a five-week scholarship to the prestigious Berklee School of Music. While in attendance, she was awarded a second scholarship to further her studies in music. When she returned a few months later, she was chosen to perform as the local headline act for Michael Bolton in concert.

One year later and at Barbados’ FIRST ANNUAL MUSIC AWARDS, Kareen was honored with not only a performance at the event, but was nominated in the “BEST SELLING FEMALE ARTISTE” category and won two awards- BEST GOSPEL ALBLUM for “FIRST FRUIT” and BEST GOSPEL SINGLE for “I’M RUNNING TO YOU”.

2007 has also been a year in which Kareen continues blazing a trail. She was one of the artistes selected to perform at the Grand Re-Opening of Kensinton Oval – one of the world’s most prestigious and historically rich cricket grounds. She was also presented with the GOLD certification by the Barbados Music Awards for reaching sales of over 5,000. She also accompanied the Royal Barbados Police Force at the Holder’s Season in the same year – a rendition that was uniquely featured, since she was the only soloist on the programme for that night.

The Crop Over Season 2007 was also a successful one for Kareen Clarke. It was her debut performance in the Experience Tent which garnered her support for two pieces – “Barbados” and “Father”, both written and produced by this talented daughter of the soil. “Barbados” won her critical acclaim when she was awarded the BTA Crop Over Festival Award for the song which best promotes Barbados. She also performed at the most recent Barbados Tourism Awards held under the auspices of the Prime Minister of Barbados, the Right Honorable Owen Arthur.

As Kareen Clarke continues her inspiration journey in the Region and around the world, she graces the stage with a profound elegance and style. Indeed, her tireless passion continues to bear fruit; for wherever and whenever she performs she
