A Pencil and a Pad

She (He) wanted to be someone else, live someone else’s life,
So she (he) hid in other families for years.
And you never got to know her (him) well.
She (He) never let you in.
To the place that held her (his) dreams and her (his) fears.

She (He) never really smiled,
Seemed quiet and withdrawn,
And it looked to the outside world
Like all her (his) hope was gone.

But always in her (his) pocket were A PENCIL AND A PAD.
And she (he) knew she (he) had a place to go
When things were goin’ bad.

She (He) would write a song, and the pain would disappear.
She (He) would write a song, then everything was clear.
Her (His) heart could sing. Her (His) soul took wing.

She (He) always had a feeling
That her (his) songs were not her (his) own,
That they had a greater purpose than she (he) knew.
And in her (his) heart she (he) realized
Her (His) life would have to change
So she (he) could do the work she (he) had to do.

Her (His) music was the key to everything inside.
The more she (he) played, the more she (he) knew
She (He) could no longer hide.

And though it seemed her (his) life
Wouldn’t turn out like she (he) planned,
She (He) knew she (he) had the gift to heal
Right there in her (his) hand.

She (He) would write a song that someone else would hear.
And somehow that song would release them from their fear.
Their hearts could sing. Their souls take wing.

And though they wouldn’t know who wrote the song with so much caring,
They’d know it was a gift of love another soul was sharing.

She (He) would write a song, and the pain would disappear.
She (He) would write a song, then everything was clear.
Her (His) heart could sing. Her (His) soul took wing.
Her (His) heart could sing. Her (His) soul took wing…

Holding On

“Holding On”
©Karen Benedetto (ASCAP) (Words & Music)

Was it a dream?
I’m not really sure.
I can still hear the sound of the opening door.
Seems like a nightmare, from so long ago…
learning some things I was too young to know.
Alone in the darkness and scared half to death,
praying to God and holding my breath.
If he thinks I’m asleep, he might go away…

Eight or nine or ten years old, just yesterday, it seems
A monster came into my room and stole away my dreams.
Too young to know I had a choice, too numb to even scream.

His breath was hot against my skin, it smelled of bitter spice.
The darkness made his face a mast, his hands were cold as ice.
I felt my heart was closing down and my soul would pay the price.

I held on through the darkness, waiting for the light.
I held on to the hope that I would be alright.
I knew I had to find the strength to make it to the day.
I held my breath until I heard his footsteps fade away…

The monster didn’t go away, he haunted me for years.
I kept our little secret hidden with my fears.
I vowed that I would never show any weakness or any tears.

I held on through the darkness, waiting for the light.
I held on to the hope that I would be alright.
I knew I had to find the strength to make it to the day.
I held my breath until I heard his footsteps fade away.

Then one day I met someone who fell in love with me—
The “me” that I had hidden, that no one else could see.
That love gave me the power to set the monster free.

I no longer fear the darkness.
Each day is filled with light.
My hope is now my truth, that everything’s alright.
I know now that I have the strength
To make it all the way.

I breathe life deep into my soul, and know…
I’m home to stay.

Southern Rains

"Southern Rains"

@ Karen Benedetto (ASCAP) (Words & Music) All Rights Reserved. Not for Duplication Without Permission.

Southern tears, southern pain,
People dying in the rain.
It's so hard to remember when
But the south will rise again.

Broken lives, shattered dreams
Washed away in the streams.
Mothers' fears, children's cries
But we know the south will rise.

Join hands,
Let's rise above the flowing waters.
Join hands,
With all our southern sons and daughters.
Help them know the power of "Amen".
With our love, yes, with our love
The South will rise again.

Southern trees bow their heads.
Southern winds blow with dread.
Dark clouds over southern skies.
But soon we'll see the South begin to rise.

Southern hearts, southern ways,
Soon to come, better days.
Rebuild the towns with our love,
Then the South can rise above.

Join hands,
The things that we can do together!
Join hands,
There's nothing that we cannot weather.
We all know the power of "Amen".
With our love, yes, with our love
The South will rise again.

Join hands,
Let's rise above the flowing waters.
Join hands,
With all our southern sons and daughters.
Help them know the power of "Amen".
With our love, yes, with our love
The South will rise again.
The South will rise again.
Rise again!

California

Written By: Karen Benedetto

"California"

Sittin' by a window havin' coffee with a friend.
This day in Sausalito in my heart can never end.
Drivin' through the redwoods,
With my good friend by my side.
Now, when I think back, it just makes me want to cry.

CALIFORNIA seems like a dream to me now.
CALIFORNIA, it all seems so unreal somehow.
CALIFORNINA, as I think of you today.
CALIFORNNIA, you feel so very far away.

Drivin'down the coastline, our laughter fills the air.
Stoppin' by a sandy beach, life without a care.
Drivin' 'cross the Golden Gate, the sunset fills the sky.
My heart is filled with happiness, but a tear is in my eye.

CALIFORNIA seems like a dream, to me now.
CALIFORNIA, it all seems so unreal somehow.
CALIFORNIA, where I found a real friend.
CALIFORNIA, hey, why'd it have to end?

Trav'lin' 'round from town to town,
There's so much left to see,
Time's so short, but love's so strong, it just amazes me.
Through all our changes, rearranges,
Our friendship seemed to thrive.
It took you and CALIFORNIA to make me feel alive.

CALIFORNIA seems like a dream to me now.
CALIFORNIA, oh, it all seems so unreal somehow.
CALIFORNIA, had to leave my friend behind.
CALIFORNIA, you're always on my mind.
CALIFORNIA always on my mind...

I'm Giving Love This Christmas

Written By: Karen Benedetto

"I'm Giving Love This Christmas" (The Perfect Gift)

The holidays will soon be here,
And then, before you know it,
You're caught up in the Christmas crunch You can't seem to "ho-ho-ho" it.

Well, here's my plan to get me through The holidays all cheery
I hope you find it helps you, too
To feel a bit less weary...

I won't be surfing on the Internet for presents, Or leafing through the catalogues like mad.
I won't be elbowing my way
Through stores day after day
To find the thing someone already had.
My gift does not require any wrapping,
And I really can't adorn it with a bow,

Because I'M GIVING LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS To everyone I know.
Yes, I'M GIVING LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS To everyone I know.

I realize it sounds a little crazy
To give a gift that's not from any store.
It doesn't have a fancy box.
It's not another tie or socks.
And the greatest thing is that there's always more. It's in the air, especially at Christmas
You can find it anywhere you go.

Yes, I'M GIVING LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS To everyone I know.
Yes, I'M GIVING LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS To everyone I know.

It's worth more than anything
Money could buy¬
Right here in our hearts,
An unending supply.
So, I've given up on shopping' and exchanging
Things that lose their value in a day.
Because I'M GIVING LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS, And Christmas starts today.
Yes, I'M GIVING LOVE THIS CHRISTMAS. It's a Love-filled holiday!

Watch Me Fly

Written By: Karen Benedetto

“Watch Me Fly”

Oh, the joy I feel, knowing I can fly,
Knowing I can spread my wings
And touch the sky!

My heart is filled with Hope, my Spirit soars.
I’m walking bravely now
Through every door!

And for the first time ever,
I believe in myself,
And I will see my dreams come true,
Coming through…

Oh, the joy I feel
Knowing I have grown,
Knowing I am stronger now,
And not alone.

My heart is filled with Love,
God leads the way.
I’m choosing Love and Beauty every day!

And now I see so clearly.
It was always here inside me.
It took God’s Love to set me free.
I am free!

I am no longer searching,
Now I can soar among the clouds.
God is the only answer.
To every question I have now.

I can fly!
Touch the sky!
WATCH ME FLY!

Time and Truth

Written By: Karen Benedetto

“Time and Truth”

What if tomorrow were your last?
How would you look upon your past?
Would you think it was a gift, or just a game?
Would you change a thing or two,
Or stay the same?

TIME can be a fearful thing,
And it isn’t always a friend.
But the TRUTH is,
We’re all eternal souls in the end.

What if today were all you had?
Would you be feeling good or bad,
About the way you spent this precious day?
Did you stop to love, and did you stop to play?

TIME can be a fleeting thing,
And we always want to extend.
But the TRUTH is,
We’re all eternal souls in the end.

Life goes on forever
In the people that we touch.
Just open up your heart.
And don’t be afraid to love too much.

What if we measured TIME in ways
That counted more than days?
Then love would be the currency we’d spend,
And the wounds from living fearfully could mend.

TIME is just a passing thing,
And we think we must make amends.
But the TRUTH is our hearts go on and on.
The TRUTH is, Love is never gone.
The TRUTH is,
We’re all eternal souls in the end.
The TRUTH is,
We’re all eternal souls in the end.

Happy New Year To You

Written By: Karen Benedetto

“Happy New Year To You”

Well, another year has come and gone.
We’ve had the strength to see it through.
We’ve learned a little and we’ve lost a lot.
But, now it’s time to start anew.

Now the New Year hands us promises.
We’re hanging onto every word.
And as we pause to watch the old year end,
We’re hearing songs we’ve never heard.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!
Here’s to new beginnings
Filled with laughter and cheer.

So let us raise our glasses,
Toast to perfect endings
And a Happy New Year!

We’ve had to say goodbye to some good friends.
We’ve also stopped to say ‘Hello’.
And as we pause to watch the old year end,
There’s still so much that we don’t know.

The sacred circle of the earth revolves,
And we each must play our part.
Let us hang on to this gift of love
Ever present in our hearts.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!
Here’s to new beginnings.
Filled with laughter and cheer.

So let us raise our glasses,
Toast to perfect endings,
And a Happy New Year!

For auld lang syne, ring in Joy, ring in Peace.
Ring in Hope. Let the good times increase.
Key Change
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!
Here’s to new beginnings.
Filled with laughter and cheer.

So let us raise our glasses,
Toast to perfect endings,
And a Happy New Year.
Key Change
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU…
Here’s to new beginning.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!

Let us raise our glasses,
Toast to perfect endings.
And a Happy New Year…

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU.

A Promise of Spring

Written By: Karen Benedetto

“A Promise of Spring”
(Lyrics to Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, op. 18)

Oh, river, white and wide,
With knowing patience, taking Winter in your stride.
Your icy floes stretching from shore to shore
Like puzzle pieces awaiting Love’s hand to complete and restore.

Oh, mountains, bare and brown,
Upon your shoulders Winter’s placed her snowy crown.
All lovers know these seasons come and go.
And have the faith in the promises told of a Love long ago.

Spring’s sweet song,
You beckon in my dreams with melodies so strong.
Love, soft and new, I long to touch your innocence,
While knowing well I must wait with patience and reverence.

Oh, Love, your majesty
Is all around us if we have the eyes to see.
Through Winter’s reign, I’ve waited faithfully,
For the first taste of the flower that Spring has opened to me.

Awake, my Love, and be renewed again.
Spread your wings and fly above all earthly things.
True Love is the promise for all men.
Rise up and welcome the Spring!

All people, hear God’s plan.
He does bestow the gift of Love on every man.
And every Spring, the sounds of newness ring,
Amid the burgeoning trees and through the virgin breeze
I hear you calling to me
And I can never be free
From all the Love that you bring to my life
And the passion of Spring.
Arise!

Everywoman Blues

Written By: Karen Benedetto

“Everywoman Blues”

The gentleman took her by the hand
And then he whispered something dicey
She thought he was attempting to entice.
Then it started as a glow
As if she’d eaten something spicy.
She felt all warm and tingly—it was nice.
Well, she began to sweat.
Her face turned red, her heart protested.
She thought for just a second she had cardiac arrested.

Could it have been the double-decker taco she was eating?
Or maybe guacamole was the cause.
Or was it that her once intrepid youth was now retreating
In the name of peri-menopause?
Now she knew she joined a club
With every woman as a member
Who needs the air conditioner in the middle of December.

EVERYWOMAN BLUES

She was walking down the street
When she was slowed by sudden urges.
This time it wasn’t chocolate or caffeine.
No, she was being blessed
By one of women’s many scourges
That plagues them all from crone to beauty queen.
This time she had to stop for just a harmless little sneeze.
Thank God that she remembered to give her thighs a squeeze.
‘Cause to tell the truth there’s not a lot
That makes a woman madder
Than to spend her days and nights with an overactive bladder.

So brothers, heed their warnings
When they tell you to step lightly.
These are the times that try a woman's soul.
And when she asks “Do I look fat?”, respond to her contritely.
Do not attempt an answer that is droll.
She’ll tell you your reply is just as funny as a tumor.
For along with her libido, she’s lost her sense of humor.
And even though she's reached the age when she’s no longer fecund,
The menopausal woman is a power to be reckoned!

I’d always been the kind to want to make it on my own.
My dreams were small and simple and I knew,
That they really didn’t matter to anyone but me.
Then I met you.

YOU’RE THE ONE who opened up my eyes,
I was blind to the world of possibilities.
YOU’RE THE ONE who opened up my heart,
I was numb to the dreams deep inside of me.
YOU’RE THE ONE who never let me settle for less,
And now that my path is true, I owe it all to you.
YOU’RE THE ONE. YOU’RE THE ONE.

I thought life was a challenge you never get to win,
Just struggle after struggle you get through.
Content to hide my dreams away I never learned to fly,
Then I met you.

YOU’RE THE ONE who looked into my soul,
It was dark, and you saw what no one else could see.
YOU’RE THE ONE who reached out for my hand,
I was lost, and your love gently guided me.
YOU’RE THE ONE who taught me
How to reach for the skies,
And now that I’m breaking through,
I owe it all to you.
YOU’RE THE ONE. YOU’RE THE ONE.

The one who knows my weaknesses
And loves me anyway.
The one that I need in my life, each and every day.
YOU’RE THE ONE…

YOU’RE THE ONE…
Who never once lost faith in the dream.
And now that it’s coming true,
I owe it all to you. YOU’RE THE ONE…
YOU’RE THE ONE…

True to Yourself

Written By: Karen Benedetto

“True to Yourself”
©Karen Benedetto (ASCAP) (Words & Music)

Whatever you do, you need to be TRUE TO YOURSELF.

So many roads, so many possibilities.
Which way to go? Sometimes I can’t see.
I ask for guidance, I close my eyes.
I listen closely, it’s no surprise.
It says: ‘Whatever you do, you need to be
TRUE TO YOURSELF’.

So many roles, I don’t know which is really me.
I need to know, so I can be free.
So many questions, I close my eyes.
Then comes the answer, it’s no surprise.
It says: ‘Whatever you do, you need to be
TRUE TO YOURSELF’.

Listen to the breeze,
It doesn’t need direction.
It knows what to do,
It’s sublime perfection.

So many rules, and not all of them are mine.
How do I choose, which ones are divine?
I ask for guidance, I close my eyes.
Then Spirit tells me, it’s no surprise.
It says: ‘Whatever you do, you need to be
TRUE TO YOURSELF’.

Whatever I do, I need to be true to myself.

Whatever I do, I’m gonna be true to myself.
