"New Sounds: Massachusetts pop upstart Karina Rae is ready for her close-up"

Karina Rae knows her way around a stage.

The Lowell native was just eight years old when she won a singing competition and joined KIDZ BOP on stage at a stop in her hometown. It was from that point on where she knew what she wanted to do in life. “I just knew I wanted to be an entertainer,” Rae says. “At that moment, I thought, ‘I don’t ever want to get off this stage!’ This is what makes me the happiest.”

She’s back on a stage tonight, though in a remarkably different arena. The young pop singer, whose sound falls somewhere between Ariana Grande’s uber-polished radio hits and alt-pop misfits like Billie Eilish and Charli XCX, releases her new EP, Love At Seventeen, tonight (July 28) at Sonia in Cambridge.

The new EP was produced by Rebirth Entertainment, and in May delivered its first single, a tropical-minded pop jam titled “Volcano.” The track, and EP as a whole, is a natural progression for the young songwriter, who gained online buzz a few years back when she teamed with Sammy Wilk to cover Grande’s “Best Mistake,” a YouTube upload that’s creeping on one million views.

“The songs in this EP represent some of the very complicated love emotions I went through and discovered at around the age of seventeen,” Rae says in a press release. “It’s about falling in love, having your heart broken, not wanting to let go of someone and even falling in love again! I discovered myself as a sexual being and became a lot more confident in who I am over the course of making this EP. I instantly connected with all the different emotions in the songs, and I know a lot of people go through the same rollercoaster of emotions at around my age.”

Like all shows at Sonia, tonight’s gig is all ages. But Rae already possesses the pop smarts to appeal to any age group, and it’ll be exciting to see where she goes from here. - Vanyaland

"EXCLUSIVE: Get To Know Rising Singer Karina Rae"

It's very possible that you first got to know singer Karina Rae after she covered "Best Mistake" with Sammy Wilk. But now, she's gearing up to drop a fresh new single that reflects how much she's grown in her musical storytelling. To celebrate, YSBnow caught up with the rising star to learn about her earliest days making music, and what's coming up next for her. Check out our exclusive Q&A with the singer below!

YSBnow: How would you describe your career so far, and what are your biggest goals for where
your music will take you?

Karina Rae: The ride so far pursuing this kind of career has been insane. I’ve grown a ton as an artist but more importantly as a person.

YSBnow: Do you remember your earliest music memory, that first got you interested in music?

Karina Rae: My parents tell me that I was singing before I could speak, and that a trick they would use when I would get antsy in the car is turn on the radio or play a CD. I’d shut up instantly and start singing. My love for music and singing started really young when I would perform at any given chance during my elementary school years. Then, going into middle school I’d sing at every assembly, local events and more. The rest is pretty much history.

YSBnow: Who are some of your biggest inspirations?

Karina Rae: Right now, I look up to a lot of different people. I’d say the most influential person to me as a performer is Beyoncé. I’ve seen her live performances every chance I got when she would come to Boston. I try to give the same energy during my performances.

YSBnow: What can our readers look forward to hearing from you?

Karina Rae: I have new music FINALLY coming out this year, starting with my first single, “Go Off”. The song is the first song I’ve written and helped arrange from start to finish. I wrote it after my ex- boyfriend had broken up with me. It’s a good one. It’ll be out on every streaming platform. - YBS Now

Bio

Nineteen-year-old Karina Rae found herself on an arena stage at just eight-years-old. She won a singing competition and got the chance to perform alongside KIDZ BOP during the tour’s show in her native Lowell, MA. Looking out at the audience, she could practically see her future begin to unfold. The singer and songwriter immediately set on a course to pursue her dream.

“I just knew I wanted to be an entertainer,” she declares. “At that moment, I thought, ‘I don’t ever want to get off this stage!’ This is what makes me the happiest.”

Over the next eight years, Karina would tirelessly hone her voice through formal vocal training after school, at Berklee College of Music’s prestigious summer program, and in any venue possible. This included singing for the Special Olympics and performing the national anthem at Fenway Park during a Red Sox game. By the age of 13, she started uploading her music to YouTube inspired by Beyoncé and more.

Karina and her band played high-profile events including Fan Rave, Arthur Ashe Kids Day, Playlist Live, and more as well as opening for high profile artists as well as headlining her own local shows. Backed by guitar, bass, and drums, she captivates crowds with an undeniable live presence and natural charisma.

Karina leaves off, “When people hear my music, I’d love for them to feel empowered—like they can be anything they want. That’s the most important thing.”
