Bio
As a author of many works of non-fiction this musical has been my avocation for the past 20 years.
The idea for a musical set in a cafe run by recovering alcoholics came to me in 1988. The inspiration for the Hard Luck Cafe itself is the Day by Day Cafe in St. Paul, Minnesota, which, for more than 30 years has employed staff who have recently completed rehab, and is known in the Twin Cities for its great breakfasts and friendly atmosphere. The writing of a musical which highlights the role of social support in recovery was also informed by friends and family members who successfully completed rehab. My father and brother, both now deceased, were alumni of Hazelden in Southern Minnesota. This musical is dedicated to them.
As the stories of two lifelong female friends is interwoven with the colorful characters who population the Hard Luck Cafe, the music highlights the roles of friendship, personal responsibility and humor in recovery.
The musical had it's first staged readings in Washington D.C. in September, 2008 following which theatre critic Joel Markowitz posted an article on DC theatrescene.com. http://dctheatrescene.com/2008/10/06/welcome-to-the-hard-luck-cafe/
