Bio

Meet Karla Michelle…a young lady whose powerfully anointed vocals rival that of Yolanda Adams, Vickie Winans, and Lisa Page Brooks. Her soaring voice will take your breath away with Mariah Carey pitches and catapult you on a journey of warm melodies and rich harmonies. Her Contemporary Gospel style is fluid with influences from R&B, Jazz, Neo-Soul, Hip Hop, Contemporary Christian, and Crossover Pop.

As a teen, Karla garnered national exposure as the two-time Regional NAACP-ACTSO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Scientific, Olympics) Vocalist Winner. Through this competition, she had the honor of being coached by Carla Thomas who had the 60’s hit "Gee Whiz". Carla Thomas commented that Karla had a beautiful voice and the will to succeed in the music business. Soon after her national exposure at the ACT-SO competition, Karla showed up and showed out at the K-97 Pepsi Challenge Contest and was named a Pepsi-Challenge Winner by the radio station with her winning rendition of Michael Jackson's "Who's Loving You" which aired on the hit evening show. When she wasn't spending endless hours a week rehearsing and performing with her high school choir, she and her mother were making the near-hour long trek to South Memphis and Mississippi to practice with Tan and the Violinettes, a popular, local contemporary gospel group. Throughout junior high and high school, one would have to stay on his toes to keep up with Karla. She says that most of her weekends were spent competing in numerous city talent shows. She placed frequently and she also often advanced to the regionally popular Mid-South Fair Talent Finals. Her talent did not go unnoticed by her high school classmates who voted her Most Talented out of a 500 member class.

Through her exposure with the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Karla graced stages with artists such as Yolanda Adams, Trisha Yearwood, Shania Twain, and Michael W. Smith. She has also appeared in several television and radio productions including background vocals at the CMA (Country Music Association) and the GMA (Gospel Music Association) Awards. The Memphis produced Gospel Unlimited TV Show and Clear Channel and Gilliam Communications commercials have also been blessed by both her musical, creative, and spokesperson talents with Karla writing and singing in the ads.

But her media accomplishments don't stop there. She was also a lead vocalist for Nashville’s Channel 4 News commercial while she was in college. Additionally, the national magazine, PARADE, picked up on Karla's star quality and featured her aspirations in their publication. Isaac Hayes' Music Food Passion, Memphis Originals, the AVON Breast Cancer Crusade, and Rhodes College have been Karla’s most recent venues. After hearing Karla Michelle sing a set at Isaac Hayes', a member of the audience commented that Karla would be a challenge for Cece Winans. As a studio vocalist, she recently laid background vocals for the nationally acclaimed Crossway Worship Band’s new CD that was released this April.

Karla says that co-producing her own CD project, The Way I Feel, along with Bobby Manual, President of High Stacks Records, was a rewarding experience for her. High Stacks is known for producing projects such as Billy Rivers & The Angelic Voices of Faith. Terry Poindexter, engineer for the CD, has produced artists such as The Gospel Gangstas. Karla is active in the music community. She is a member of the GMA and she is a BMI Singer and Songwriter.

More than just a pretty voice…when Karla isn’t leading praise and worship or singing at local churches, she can be found counseling victims of abuse or mentoring area youth. As the founder of Healed Heart Ministries, Inc., she was recently recognized by Lane Bryant and Catherine's as one who has raised her voice to make a difference in her community. Karla says that receiving the coveted 100 Voices Award is one of her proudest accomplishments to date.

Kudos-
Derrick Jackson, Keyboardist/Recording Artist/Personal Musician for Bishop GE Patterson, stated, "Karla is a beautiful young lady who has a heart for ministry and evangelism. When she ministers in song, yokes are broken and strongholds are torn down."
