Bio
KARMATE was born when Resul Dinar, Ismail Avci and Oktay Üst met in 2008. Karmate literally means mill in the Laz (Northern Turkey) dialect. Karmate symbolizes production, labor and unrequited sharing for the people of the Black Sea region. Karmate as the name of the band is meant to symbolize the efforts of the musicians involved for saving the almost forgotten languages, lyrics and melodies of the unique culture of the Black Sea region. Karmates first release nani by Kalan Music label includes songs in Turkish, Laz, Megrel, Georgian, Hemshin and Roman, all of which are languages spoken in the region.
Karmate creates its magic by reproducing traditional songs from the region featuring both modern and ethnic instruments. In their songs Karmate touches on sensitive recent issues such as the environmental destruction caused by the greed of modern economical polices and the threat on the existence of local communities and the sustainability of their cultural heritage.
