Our soldiers serving overseas often live and work in extremely difficult situations. It’s also difficult for their families back home. One military mom found a unique way to reach out to her son.
When Karol Cavanaugh’s son Kane was serving in Iraq, she wanted a way to connect with him. She decided to do it through music. She got out a pen, paper and her guitar and composed a song.
It starts out, ‘Little Darling, how you doing? I pray that you’re just fine’,” said Cavanaugh.
Ipray that you are just Jine. I hope you don’t mind we fixed your pick—up and then we took it for a midnight ride.
“We fixed it up and then you know when you get done you have got to take it for a test drive and it was find of fun riding around in his pickup listening to his tunes,” said Cavanaugh.
Karol did not have to search far for the lyrics to the song — she and her family were living them eveiy day.
“I am like, ‘well, what is going on here?’ and so that is how we got a blue star in the window,” said Cavanaugh.
We hung a Blue Star in our window. A yellow ribbon on our door. We lit the candles and keep them burning and wait for mom and dad lam home.
Karol did not have to look any further than her own window to get the title to her song and she knows exactly what it means to hang one of those blue stars in her window.
“It started way back, gosh, I think in the world wars or maybe even before. The soldiers would come home and if they needed some place to go, they would look for the blue star,” Cavanaugh said.
Karol has played “Blue Star in Our Window” for many people, but she was most interested in the reaction of the one she wrote it for — her son Kane.
“Actually, I recorded it and sent it to him. I think that was the first time he was in Iraq. I sent it over to him and they thought it was pretty good,” said Cavanaugh.
We pray daily for the safety of all who serve us there. We love you and God Bless you and we’re waiting for you here.
Karol has written about a dozen songs. But this one will always be special. And one many parents with sons or daughters serving in the military are living every day.
“Tough. Tough. I kind of go on the philosophy ‘they will be done.’ Every day we live day by day and thy will be done,” said Cavanaugh.
And wait for mom and dad Jam home. We wait for mom and dad Jam home.
Karol’s son Kane returned to the United States last month having completed his second tour of duty in Iraq.
