Newcomer Katherine Monique Sanders (a.k.a. Kat) is making waves in the music industry. At age 22 and standing at five feet eleven inches with perfect corkscrew curls, Kat has a sexy look and a swagger that’s uniquely hers.
Originally from Memphis Tennessee, Kat began her music career at a very young age. During family gatherings, there was a focus on musical expression, with singing and the playing of musical instruments common for almost everyone involved. She first began singing in the church choir, were she developed an appreciation for the intensity and expressiveness of gospel music. For as long as she can remember, Kat knew that music was going to be her profession.
Kat’s early musical influences were Aliyah, Lil’ Wayne, and Biggie. In her late teens, Kat joined a girl rap group called Dyme Piece, which had generated some local momentum until the group broke up when one of the members left to pursue a solo career. At that point Kat decided to put her music career on hold to go to Bouder College in Atlanta. She graduated in 2002 with a degree in fashion marketing. But Kat couldn’t stay away from the music scene for too long.
She began writing songs that conveyed serious messages. She readily admits that she gets most of her inspiration from real life events that have affected her. One particular source of influence on Kat’s songwriting is the painful relationship she had with her father. Kat says she feels a sense of abandonment from her father, who was not around much in her childhood.
Kat’s voice is hard yet sexy. Her lyrics are raw and from the “street,” yet show hints of vulnerability. No matter what the subject matter, her songs convey a sense of reality and a truth that comes from real life experiences. Kat is multidimensional unlike other rappers Kat has the talent and the range to sing as well.
Her demo is a balance between rap and R&B. She has a love song called “I want U” that she recorded in collaboration with St.Louis R&B artist Zelora Lee. The hook is catchy and sexy with lyrics like “boy how I want u .. I was hoping .. I could show u how I feel… ,”
Kat currently resides in St.Louis where she is working on completing her first album. She is signed to Fly Moves Productions, a division of Phat Buddah recording studios.
