Bio

Kate Bevan-Baker was born in Corner Brook, Newfoundland in 1988. She comes from strong musical roots on both her mother and father’s side of the family, and has been playing violin since the age of 5. Kate loves a variety of musical styles from traditional to classical and jazz.

Kate released her first CD, entitled “Snapshot” on June 17, 2006 at the Arts Guild in Charlottetown, PEI. While containing a few jazz standards and a taste of classical, the CD has a predominantly Celtic flavour, with Kate singing, playing fiddle, flute and harp. She relishes playing at summer ceilidhs on the island where she gets to fiddle, sing, play her harp and step dance. Sonny Caulfield, resident pianist at the Delta Prince Edward Hotel in Charlottetown, introduced Kate to jazz. He and Kate often play as a duo in the hotel. Kate has been the sole PEI member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada for the 2005 and 2006 seasons, proudly representing her province at all the orchestra’s concerts from coast to coast. As well as playing or singing on all the tracks, Kate arranged most of the tunes, and the CD includes one original piece, “Storm”.

A number of musical friends join Kate on the CD: Mike Pendergast, Mike Ross, Sonny Caulfield, Ian Toms, Ross MacDonald, Jon Rehder, Reg Ballagh and her Dad, Peter. Kate is excited to be continuing her music studies at Memorial University of Newfoundland, starting in September, 2006.

Kate's fiddling has been influenced by everyone from James Ehnes to Natalie MacMaster. Vocally she loves listening to Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall, Frank Sinatra, Jack Johnson, Nora Jones and Michael Buble.
