Christmas Smiles

Written By: Kate Diaz

10/2013 - new recording for my 5th annual Christmastime children's cancer fundraiser: http://katediazmusic.com/causes/christmas_smiles

Note: In my EPK I have both a 2010 studio recording, and also a 2012 (live) orchestra version...

12/2012 - Video of the orchestra arrangment I did for this song and played at school: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzyRBrMnK70

I wrote this when I was 12, and run a Christmastime children's cancer charity with it every year since. More info: http://katediazmusic.com/causes/christmas_smiles

VERSE 1:
I look out the train’s window.
It’s Christmas but it’s dismal.
A stream of stressed commuters,
Grimly scurry in the snow.

But what about their Christmas joy?
Has it frozen icy cold?
I hope inside they have miles of smiles
Waitin’ to come out.

CHORUS:
Christmas smiles,
That magic look on someone’s face.
Christmas smiles,
They wrap me in the holidays.

VERSE 2:
I walk out of the station
And through the festive streets.
Families inside houses,
Around their lit up trees.
As I open up my front door,
I hear sounds of Christmas cheer.
I give and get so many Christmas smiles
What Christmas is about!

Flint and steel collide, collide.
It sparks this feeling inside, inside.

Kill The Question Mark

Written By: Kate Diaz

I wrote this song summer 2011 when I was 14. Here is a video of the arrangement I did for my high school string orchestra to play with me: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-2E198bfbI

Verse 1:
Welcome to the machine of life.
Gotta work hard to get the best out,
But take life in stride.
The spotlight's empty,
So why don't you fill it now?

Fear can make you hide,
Kakes you kick yourself
And wonder -- how?

Chorus:
Everything happens for a reason,
But a reason makes everything happen.
I've lost my appetite for fright
And now I finally set things right,
Inside my head. I gotta kill the question mark,
Kill the question mark instead.

Verse 2:
Take a break from the heavy beat,
Find your sound, soft and sweet.
You keep on tryin' harder,
Not to fall under the radar.
Nothing can catch you off guard,
If it does, then just dust yourself off.

CHORUS

Bridge:
Come out of the shadows,
Abandon the echoes.
Regret is the biggest sorrow,
Don't put it off 'til tomorrow.

CHORUS

Don't Judge Me

Written By: Kate Diaz

I wrote this song when I was 14. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-Q9uYnfAD0

Got wind of what you're saying,
Well, why you comin' at me?
Keep my composure,
It's on your shoulders.
I'll just brush away
Those whispers of your rumors.
Your rumors

Don't don't don't judge me.
Why ya talkin' bout me?
Don't don't don't judge me.
Why do ya
Find me amusin' ?
You're choosin',
But you're losin'.
Don't don't don't judge me,
Don't judge me.

I've moved on, out of your clutch.
So I just wish you'd hush, hush.
And your laugh, it's your autograph.
But when ya laugh at me,
That's not so friendly.
Not friendly

CHORUS

A hurricane of all the things you blew,
'Cause what you said just isn't true.
It's over and out.

CHORUS 2x

A hurricane of all the things you blew, don't judge me
'Cause what you said just isn't true, don't judge me
Well I'm over and out.

Down To Earth

Written By: Kate Diaz

I'm an Earth Day Music Partner: http://www.earthday.org/athletes-and-arts-for-the-earth and I wrote this song when I was 14 for 2011 Earth Day, and then for 2012 Earth Day I got to perform it at the Earth Day Festival on The National Mall in Washington DC in April. This song has also won numerous awards from songwriting competitions.
All iTunes downloads of "Down To Earth" donated to earthday.org for sustainable energy projects.
Then in December, I was one of four teen environmentalists sent to the Captain Planet environmental gala in Atlanta, and my song was played to start the event. This song has also won some songwriting competitions I entered off of Sonicbids.
More info and video of acoustic performance of the song at: http://katediazmusic.com/causes/earth_day

Doesn't it faze us that this world,
Through waste and haste keeps gettin' torn?
We gotta take a U-turn
And make some changes in our course...

Well, hopin' and wishin' ain't never gonna change a thing.
We gotta join in and really take action...
Come on, come on down to Earth!
Come on, come on down to Earth!
Come on, come on to help Earth!

Oil spills, radiation kills, or worse.
Sad times that bring us down to Earth.
How many troubles can Earth bear?
What will it take to make us care?

CHORUS

No need to cast blame or ask for apologies,
Just help preserve our Earth for humanity.

CHORUS

We can all come down to Earth....

Don't Leave Her Behind

Written By: Kate Diaz

I was asked to write this song for the United Nations newly established UN International Day Of The Girl, on 10/11/12. More info and video: http://katediazmusic.com/causes/un_international_day_of_the_girl

Verse 1:
Hot sun outlines her shadow.
She hears the rustling as her brother hits the dusty road.
She wishes she could get out and follow.
She wants to join him and learn all that he knows.

Chorus:
Something must be done,
'Cause she's not the only one.

The girl who holds her tongue
When she gets wronged.
The girl who wants to play
In the games.
The girl who wants to read and write,
And feel safe at night.
Well don't leave her behind.
'Cause it's about time,
To not push her aside.
Whoa,
Don't leave her behind.
Yeah, don't leave her behind.
Whoa oh oh, whoa whoa whoa.

Verse 2:
The sun-lit life of a Western girl,
But sometimes clouds still rain only over her.
She may be free, but give her all she deserves,
'Cause dark lightning strikes even in her world.

Chorus 2:
Something must be done,
'Cause she's not the only one.

The girl who holds her tongue
When she gets wronged.
The girl who wants to play
In the games.
The girl who might read and write,
But still has to fight.

Don't leave her behind.
Well it's about time,
To not push her aside.
Whoa,
Don't leave her behind.
Yeah, don't leave her behind.
Whoa oh oh, whoa whoa whoa.

Bridge:
No matter what her country,
She craves the same opportunities.
To learn,
To play,
To be safe,
To be free.

Chorus 3:
So,
Don't leave her behind,
Well it's about time
To not push her aside.
Don't leave her behind.
Whoa.
Yeah,
Don't leave her behind,
She wants to learn too.
Don't leave her behind,
She wants to be safe.
Don't leave her behind,
She wants to play.
Don't leave her behind,
She wants to be free.

Don't leave her behind,
Whoa oh oh, whoa whoa whoa.
Yeah,
Don't leave her behind.

Remember

Written By: Kate Diaz

I wrote this song for my brother who just graduated high school :)
Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZuThaaWUzk

I was younger, days were long. Each one lasts forever.
Every birthday, every game, I still remember.

Now the years keep flying by, Hours pass like seconds.
Rush to get everything done, Runnin' 24/7.

Pre-Chorus:
Milestones blur by even faster.
In the fray, can't forget to remember.

Chorus:
It's the end. Things will change. They will never be the same.
Take some pictures in my mind.
To save them, save them, save them
For sometime down the line.

We can share All the memories we made.
Don't forget to remember.
That's what I know I'll do, I'll do, I'll do
I will remember.

Verse 2:
Friends I might not see again, as everyone looks forward.
Catch my breath for what lies ahead, a silent kind of passage.

Final goodbyes left unsaid, in the whirlwind of transition.
Nervous laughter, plastered smiles. Try to take it all in.

PRE-CHORUS

CHORUS

Bridge:
Remember this, for when it's over.
Cherish this, for when we're older.
We passed the time, now time is past.
But who says what's done Can't last?

Cameo

Written By: Kate Diaz

Lyric video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypZX8652at4

Verse 1:
We fit together like
The gears in a clock.
We thought we'd click forever,
But time doesn't stop.

You were the leading role,
Had lines in all my scenes.
Now buried in the background,
Just outlines of your face.

PreChorus:
To me, you used to be so essential.
When did you become inconsequential?

Chorus:
I...can't even find...
Your name in my mind.
It's faded behind
Countless new connections.

I... didn't think that you would go.
I want you back,
But we've lost all contact.
Now you're just
A CAMEO.

Verse 2:
A pastel silhouette
From another life,
Pinned over my heart,
A portrait with no name.

The short time that we shared
Felt so long back then.
Wish I could bring you back
And not forget you again.

Wildfire

Written By: Kate Diaz

youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhxOn6_1n1k

We were tied together by our commonalities,
But now we're tangled up. We just can't agree.
A pile of brush, and then a lighted match.
Each fight like feeding twigs to a burning flame.

Pre-chorus:
What struck this fire remains unknown,
But the flames leap higher
'Cause angry winds blow.

Chorus:
And now,
This wildfire is
Taking away the oxygen.

Drowning in air,
Will we ever breathe the same again?

Tears flow like water, and the steam swells.
This shouting match burns. Simmer down.
It's not anyone's fault.
We've got to stop
This Wildfire, fire.
Wildfire, oh, wildfire.

Verse 2:
The smoke, it stings, I can't believe my eyes.
Tempers rising from white lies.
Wish we could settle and compromise.
Such fiery words are leavin' burns!
What was left unsaid must be heard.
So we can extinguish this blaze of scorn.

PRECHORUS

CHORUS

Ending:
Don't let these flames get higher.
Conquer this wildfire.
We'll douse these flames of anger.
We'll stop this wildfire.

Don't let these flames higher.
Conquered this wildfire.
We doused these flames of anger.
We've stopped this wildfire.

Locks

Written By: Kate Diaz

Youtube Lyric Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuJ3k5bWbHw

I saw a lot of locks on a fence in Boston this summer.
I googled it and turns out China, Rome, Paris and Moscow have had this fad for a while, based on an Italian book plot that then got made into a movie. So, I thought it was cool and wrote this song :)

Follow http://pinterest.com/katedi... for photos of locks. Send photos of ones you see to kate@katediazmusic.com and I'll add them :)

LYRICS:
Verse 1:
Walk down Mass Avenue. We're taking on the city.
Buildings come alive. We take pictures on the way.
Hit the Esplanade. Sun's strong. Shades on. Woah.
What's that rattlin' in the wind?
Some rusted locks with messages.

Chorus:
Make a wish. Save that thought,
Coming straight from the heart.
Write it down and latch it on
To a fence with a lock.

Lock in the love.
Throw away the key.
Keep it true for eternity. Yeah.

On a never-ending chain,
It's a lock, a lock with a message. [It's a lock, a lock with both our names.]
It's a lock, a lock with a message. [A lock, a lock with both our names.]

Verse 2:
Walkin' past the Hynes and over Storrow Drive.
Cross the overpass, street-sellers by the roadside.
Sellin' locks with keys, bright gold. We're sold. Oh.
Etched in our names to make it our own.
Locked it on a fence to make it known.

CHORUS

Bridge:
Years from now, we'll come back, Come back.
Déjà vu when we walk past. Walk past.
Made of steel, this lock will stay attached.
Like it, we'll always last.

So,

CHORUS x 2

Oh.

It's a lock, a lock.

Play The Part

Written By: Kate Diaz

based on Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night

VERSE 1:
She lost her other half in the storm.
Once he was gone, she swam to new shores.
Through the cold nights, she knocked on new doors,
But she was turned away.

She forced herself to change how she behaves
Hid behind a façade to cause no waves.

PRE-CHORUS 1:
Costume on, and mask on tight,
She missed her real self, but stayed disguised
But stayed disguised
to

CHORUS 1:
Play the part,
And walk the walk.
Had to play the game,
With a poker face.

She can’t blow her cover, but wants to be free,
So she’s stuck with who she thought she needed to be.
And it breaks her heart,
‘Cause now she must,
Play the part,
Play the part.

VERSE 2:
He led the life that was forced on him,
Deep down inside he wished that he could quit.
His heart wasn’t in it; he put on an act,
And just went with it.

He said the right things to everyone else,
But he wanted to show how he really felt.

PRE-CHORUS 2:
Costume on, and mask on tight,
He hid his real self, and stayed disguised
And stayed Disguised to

CHORUS 2:
Play the part,
And walk the walk.
Had to Play the game,
With a poker face.

He can’t blow his cover, but wants to be free,
So he’s stuck with who he thought he needed to be.
And it breaks his heart,
‘Cause all he does
Is play the part,
Play the part.

BRIDGE:
She’s tangled up by her masquerading lies.
And he’s fed up with the front he hides behind.

LAST CHORUS:
They played the part,
And walked the walk.
They played the game,
With a poker face.

Take off the mask.
Don’t play the part.
Just play it straight.
Be what you will,
Be what you will,
Be what you will.

Tell The World

Written By: Kate Diaz

Some live to see and be seen
But some work hard in secrecy
Yeah, we got our hidden dreams.

No one knows we are anythin'
And they can't guess how we have been
Getting ready to ascend.

BRIDGE 1
'Cause we can be the gem among the rocks, the rocks
Turn off the lights and we shine through the dark, the dark.

CHORUS

Tell the world we're steppin' up
'Cause we're all in got nothin' we won't give.

'Cause here we come together we will tell
Tell the world.

Turn Out

Written By: Kate Diaz

Verse 1:
Not you again. What strange happenstance.
We both avoid eye contact as we pass.
I am shy with hellos, but I'll say 'hi' at last.
This must be a happy accident.

Pre-chorus:
I saw you gettin' coffee,
Bumped into you at 3:00.
Guess we walk the same streets
Must be serendipity
Yeah
Oh.

Chorus:
Some things can happen
Accidentally on purpose
Like in a movie
A crazy coincidence
A couple days ago
You would've never heard these words
Out of my mouth
Just funny how things turn out.

Verse 2:
You smiled hello back and it turns out
Once we started talkin' found some common ground.
We both hate the rain and love birthdays and goin' out.
Well I guess I'll see you around.

Prechorus 2:
Next time you're gettin' coffee
Maybe sit with me.
We walk the same streets.
Must be serendipity
Yeah.
Oh.

CHORUS

Bridge:
Now everday we meet at 3:00.
Our break from the daily grind
So strange you're not a stranger now
So lucky we could break the ice.
All those times I passed you by.
Guess destiny was in disguise.

Bombs Away

Written By: Kate Diaz

VERSE 1
Did you hear about Boston?
My friend cried to me.
Did you see the explosion?
We're paralyzed by our TVs.

Did you see that they found a face,
Sent the heavyweights
To try to hunt them down?

Did you watch as a spotlight
Gave chase through Watertown?

PRE-CHORUS
Why
Are some people heartless,
Hypnotized, and thoughtless?
And Why
Can one rip hundreds away,
Then claim it’s all for Faith?

CHORUS
My ears are ringing from the lies they're spinnin'.
Put those bombs away.
My heart is aching for the lives they’ve taken.
Put those bombs away.

They say that no place is safe.
Put those bombs away.
We'll show them we’re not afraid.
Bombs away.

VERSE 2
You can only imagine
The sound that it made.
Not just the explosion,
But the cries smothered in gray.

I watched as friends were tossed, loved ones were lost.
They’re still trying to find them now.

I still hear all the sirens
Racing clocks that were running out.

PRECHORUS
CHORUS (minus last line)

BREAKDOWN x 2
Paris, New York
Belgium and more,
Scarred by attacks, and on high alert.

Terror threats
are now the norm.
We hold our breath, this isn’t our War.

LAST CHORUS

Want To

Written By: Kate Diaz

VERSE 1
Burning candles at both ends,
A busy week, no time for friends.
One thing after the next,
‘Til the weekend.

I toss my keys on the counter,
Put my feet on the table,
Ask you all to come over.
Already feeling better.

PRECHORUS
Hear the knocks on my door,
That secret beat that’s only ours.
My footsteps race across the floor.
You’re all here, and

Weekly stories will unfold.
Inside jokes never get old.
Hours laughin’ on the floor.
There’s nothing like when time’s on our side ‘cause

CHORUS
We got nowhere to go.
We got nowhere to be.
Just enjoy the company.
We can do what we want to.

VERSE 2
We pick out a movie
That we don’t end up watchin’
‘Cause we’re too entertainin’.
We spend hours talkin’.

Weekly stories all unfold.
Inside jokes never get old.
Hours laughin’ on the floor.
There’s nothing like when time’s on our side ‘cause

CHORUS

BREAKDOWN 2x
Out of sight,
Out of mind,
No deadlines,
We can do what we want to
