"Berklee Alumni Take Idol by Storm"

"Five Berklee alumni and one current student are among the nearly 200 American Idol contestants to earn "tickets to Hollywood" to compete in the next round of the ninth season. The Hollywood auditions begin February 9, and will narrow the field to 24 semifinalists.

Katelyn Clampett '09, Jen Hirsh '08, Bosa Mora '09, Ashley Rodriguez '09, and Jess Wolfe '07 and sixth-semester student Justin Gray all wowed the judges in their auditions, getting the go-ahead to advance to Hollywood Week.

Rodriguez, a Massachusetts native, got her initiation to Berklee at age 16 through the City Music Program. After graduating from Chelsea High School in 2005, she earned a full-tuition scholarship to Berklee, where she studied music business/management. Since graduating, she's in Los Angeles completing an internship at Berklee's City Music Network member site.

J. Curtis Warner, executive director of Beklee City Music, had the opportunity to meet with Rodriguez recently. "She's said if it weren't for City Music, she probably wouldn't have gone to college. It allowed her to follow her dreams," he says. "City Music has clearly proven to be able to take a young person without means for college and educate them, guide them through the college process, and get national recognition and standing in the music industry."

At Berklee, majoring in music business/management gave her the knowledge to ask the right questions and helped build confidence in front of cameras and for performances and auditions, Warner notes.

Hirsh, a California native who counts jazz among her big influences, is living and performing in New York. Wolfe hails from Los Angeles and works as a booking agent and performer in New York. Both women were also music business/management majors.

Jeff Dorenfeld, professor of music business/management, notes that both Hirsh and Wolfe further realized the value of performance in a business and performance setting through his Music Intermediaries course. As the faculty advisor to student record label Heavy Rotation Records, Dorenfeld also worked with Wolfe, who was also a dual performance major, when she directed the label. "She puts a lot of energy into whatever she does. She's very driven," he says. Hirsh, meanwhile, was in the band Turkuaz, which was featured on the label's Dorm Sessions V album.

Mora, who majored in professional music, is a native Ohioan of Nigerian descent. While at Berklee, he held the post of national president of the Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association.

Clampett, who hails from Raleigh, North Carolina, was a professional music major. Gray is a music production and engineering major from Meadville, Pennsylvania." - Berklee News

"Interview: Katelyn Clampett"

"Katelyn Clampett was a contestant on this year's American Idol. Unfortunatley, she was eliminated on Hollywood week, and we only get to see a glimpse of her performance. But this Berklee graduate in songwriting and production isn't giving up. Born on October 30, 1987 in Cary, North Carolina, Katelyn has some great music in store. She recently released a new single to iTunes entitled "Sweet Tea" and she has a music video of a song titled "Water them Down" (whcih is at the end of the post). Now she is getting ready to participate in a contest which she wouldn't tell. (But I'll try to find it out later) As you may already know, Katleyn agreed to answer some questions to me, she told me what she tought of Lee's victory, how was all the experience, what's next for her and Britney Spears?.

"Introducing: Katelyn Clampett"

"Indie artists are so rarely recognized for their extreme talent and incredible writing. And with that, it brings me great joy & excitement to introduce you all to Katelyn Clampett. Among the many new songs & artists I have recently been introduced to over the last few weeks, her songs have been ringing through my head more than most. And it's time to unleash her to you, my readers.

Though a girl like Taylor Swift has a look, a personality and playful songs, she still is lacking the soul and voice of a truly great singer (sorry to you TS fans, but it's true). I honestly think she has a fantastic marketing team (Christina, maybe you should get in touch with them) and because of that, has become so successful. I have yet to have one of my friends say "wow, that Taylor Swift can really sing." Move over Taylor, Katelyn is in town.

Though I hate to make comparisons to other artists out there, I think you will find some similarities amongst Katelyn's good tunes. Katelyn's lyrics contain the sweetness such as Taylor Swift & Colbie Caillat, the personality & charm of Sara Bareilles (from what I can see in her videos) and the classic beauty similar to Scarlett Johansson (it must be the red lipstick & blonde hair). The 22 year old from North Carolina was most recently seen on American Idol Season 9, where she won a gold ticket and headed to Hollywood. Though she wasn't successful on the show (thank God because we all know what happens to the winners these days), Katelyn stayed in LA and is now making her mark, as a singer-songwriter.

To date, Katelyn has released her catchy single "Sweet Tea" on iTunes (it's been on constant repeat at the gym, in my car and at the office, and expect it on repeat soon). Various bloggers have leaked her auto-tune sounding/electronic up-beat Ke$ha-like "If U Got the Balls" (which if Ke$ha didn't sound like a Valley girl trying to be a singer...). I honestly think that if Katelyn wanted to reach a greater audience, now would be the time to release this as a single - it would most definitely be a big player on the Top 40 Airwaves (hint hint!). Slower balads and AC music isn't doing it right now.. it's still summer. Perhaps this fall, the airwaves could resonate with "Sweet Tea." I'm expecting some record label to snatch her up any day now.

Hear Katelyn's versatility in music below (& a video released just days ago on her YouTube) and show your support by purchasing "Sweet Tea" on iTunes today and following Katelyn on Twitter! I'm hoping I can score an exclusive interview with Katelyn in the near future." - Wonky Pop

"Cover: Katelyn Clampett does Taio Cruz & Bruno Mars"

"Katelyn is one of those artists we just love to brag about. She knows how to put just the right personal spin on a Top 40 hit. This time, she's done a mashup of Taio Cruz's Dynamite & Bruno Mars' Grenade, and smothered it in her California Country sound. It's Glee meets Sugarland. Good stuff for anyone with a sweet tooth. Take a listen and be sure to show your support for Katelyn by buying her single Sweet Tea on iTunes." - Wonky Pop

Bio

A good southern girl from North Carolina, Katelyn Clampett is a 22-year-old Pop/Rock/Country singer/songwriter who is making a name for herself on both the East and West coasts. Katelyn has been referred to as “a more soulful, edgier version of Taylor Swift.”

At just the age of 16, Katelyn scored her first theme song to the CBS show “From Fairways to Airways,” featuring her father, PGA tour player Bobby Clampett. In 2008, she won the “Performer/Songwriter Showcase” and the “Songwriting Competition” at Berklee College of Music, and was even nominated by the Berklee Songwriting Faculty to work with Paul Simon.

After graduating from Berklee in ‘09, she began composing for numerous companies, as well as with other artists (including American Idol Contestant Justin Williams and Seth Bolt from the band Needtobreathe). Her music has also been heard on the Golf Channel for the Nationwide Tour Coverage. Not only does Clampett write Pop/Country, but her songs expand to genres such as Rock, Dance, Electronica, R&B, Blues, Jazz, Contemporary Christian and Comedy.

Miss Clampett’s “Strictly Business” EP was released on April 1st, 2011, debuting at #27 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts. “This was a pivotal moment in my career,” says Clampett. “The promotion of this record was a complete grassroots effort, and I’m so humbled by everyone that has been supporting me on iTunes.”

Katelyn was most recently seen as a contestant on Season 9 of American Idol, winning a golden ticket to Hollywood, after Kara Dioguardi told her that she “has the full package.” She was also a winner of Boston’s FOX 25 American Idol contest, and chosen as one of the 10 best singer/songwriters in the country for a new music reality series on Bravo. She has recently moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue her career in writing and performing.
