Kate Murphy

 Nashville, Tennessee, USA
BandCountryPop

A little bit country & a little bit rock n' roll! I've been compared to Bonnie Raitt & Janis Joplin. I am country with a rock/blues edge. My voice is versatile so I can croon a pretty ballad or shake things up! Whatever I am singing, I have to be emotional attached to it or I won't do it!

Biography

What brings a girl from New York to Nashville? For Kate Murphy, the answer is simple - her love of country music and the fact that she can just be herself when she writes and sings it.
With a background rich in the arts, Kate could have just as easily settled in New York City and could have had a successful career as an actor and singer there, but she traded in the bright lights and glamour of Broadway for Music City.

At a very young age it was obvious that Kate was a natural on stage and she loved being there. Her performances in community theater and school programs showed her talents to be far above those of her peers, and as she entered high school her curriculum was expanded to include voice and acting classes.
Following high school, Kate attended the Hartt School of Music in Connecticut where her time off was spent performing in Summer Stock productions at the Theater Barn in New Lebanon, NY and on the cruise ship, Spirit of Boston.

After graduation, and proudly possessing a Bachelors Degree in the Fine Arts (BFA) in Musical Theater, Kate discovered her talents as an entertainer were much in demand. As a singer she spent a year as the lead production vocalist on the Carnival Cruise Line ship, "MS Fascination." She was also a featured vocalist and dancer at Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey.
In addition, she was the lead vocalist in the prominent Albany-based wedding band, "City Rhythm," and had a supporting role in the independent film "Earthen Vessels", where her talents as both an actor and singer were utilized.

Although her resume looked like that of people twice her age, and multiple opportunities continued to present themselves, Kate's love of country music brought her to Nashville in March, 2005.
Not only did Kate love country music, she found it allowed her to be herself and to sing what she felt from her heart and soul. Unlike most trained vocalists, and especially ones from New England, Kate's background is undetectable when she belts out a country song.

Since moving to Nashville, Kate has been working hard. She studies guitar, acting and voice and it comes as no surprise that she has a natural talent for songwriting as well.
The old saying "the cream rises to the top" is certainly true in Kate's case and like New York, she has had no problem finding work. As an actress, she is represented by the Graham Agency and has been featured in local commercial spots and was most recently seen on Fox Sport's Super Bowl Special featuring country singer, Trace Adkins.

One of Kate's proudest moments in Nashville was opening a show for one of her idols, country legend Loretta Lynn. She was also a Tennessee State finalist in the Colgate Country Showdown and performed in Knoxville at the Tennessee Valley Fair.
Kate keeps her singing skills honed by performing at several venues in Nashville including the world-famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge. She also fronts her own country band called "Murphy's Law" which performs at local venues in Nashville in additions to festivals all over the country.

Last year, Kate reached another milestone in her career as she completed her first all original recording project with producer Dick McVey. All six songs were written by Kate. Her music has been well received by the music community and whenever she performs them live at local writer's nights.

More recently, Kate participated in Decca Record's "Search for America's Best Musical Talent" and was selected as one of the top 25 out of more than 350 contestants.

Kate is currently pursuing her dream of landing a recording contract. With her good looks, personality and genuine natural talents as an entertainer, singer and songwriter, Kate Murphy has the total package. Although her background is a little different than that of most country singers, her ability to express her life's experiences and feelings via a song is both believable and undeniable.

Raining In Boston

Written By: Kate Murphy

Called you today out in L.A.
You said it was sunny and hot
Our talk was good and you understood
I wish I was there but I’m not
I know we decided we should talk less
And deep in my heart I know it’s all for the best

But it’s raining here in Boston
I’m drowning in my tears
I haven’t felt this way for someone in quite a lot of years
Knowing the distance between us is only in miles
Remembering the closeness we shared
And the warmth of your smile
It’s a feeling that I easily get lost in
And it’s raining here in Boston

We didn’t talk long and that was ok
I needed to hear your voice today
You sounded busy, you said you missed me
I didn’t know what to say
I wanted to tell you everything on my mind
But the words wouldn’t come out right over the line

But it’s raining here in Boston
I’m drowning in my tears
I haven’t felt this way for someone in quite a lot of years
Knowing the distance between us is only in miles
Remembering the closeness we shared and the warmth of your smile
It’s a feeling that I easily get lost in
And it’s raining here in Boston

The days seem so long without you
I just wanna hold you near
Maybe I’d feel better if there was some sunshine here

But it’s raining here in Boston
I’m drowning in my tears
I haven’t felt this way for someone in quite a lot of years
Knowing the distance between us is only in miles
Remembering the closeness we shared
And the warmth of your smile
It’s a feeling that I easily get lost in
And it’s raining here in Boston

A feeling that I easily get lost in
And it’s raining here in Boston

Country Song

Written By: Kate Murphy

Sat down to write a song today
But I just couldn’t get it done
Cuz I could hear the kids outside
Laughing & playing in the sun
Thought how good my life’s been lately
And how nothing’s going wrong
So how am I supposed to write a true country song?

You gotta write it when you’re lonely
You gotta write it when you’re stoned
You gotta write it when you’re heart aches after your lover’s up & gone
You gotta write it when you’re eyes burn after being up all night long
You gotta write it when the rain falls
Yeah, that’s a country song

This life can be a hard one
We all try to find a place
When I’m close to givin’ up
I remember your sweet face
Got my jeans, got my guitar
And my Loretta Lynn
Can’t write about the bad times when the sun’s shining on my skin

You gotta write it when you’re lonely
You gotta write it when you’re stoned
You gotta write it when you’re heart aches after your lover’s up & gone
You gotta write it when you’re eyes burn after being up all night long
You gotta write it when the rain falls
Yeah, that’s a country song

We’ve all had troubles
I’ve had my share of strife
But here in this moment, I really love my life

You gotta write it when you’re lonely
You gotta write it when you’re stoned
You gotta write it when you’re heart aches after your lover’s up & gone
You gotta write it when you’re eyes burn after being up all night long
You gotta write it when the rain falls
Yeah, that’s a country song
You gotta write it when the rain falls
Yeah, that’s a country song

Paralyzed

Written By: Kate Murphy

Why waste my time?
Why break me down?
Don’t you see I’m about to drown?

How’d you make it feel so good?
I never realized you could
Pull the wool across my eyes
So naïve, I sympathized
I fell so hard I couldn’t tell
Bees that sting are sweet as hell
Baby what a big surprise
Boy you left me paralyzed

Don’t look this way
I’m so ashamed
The world’s a stage
I was your play

How’d you make it feel so good?
I never realized you could
Pull the wool across my eyes
So naïve, I sympathized
I fell so hard I couldn’t tell
Bees that sting are sweet as hell
Baby what a big surprise
Boy you left me paralyzed

Can she do the things I do boy
Tell me to my face
Since you left I just can’t move, no
I’m stuck in this place

How’d you make it feel so good?
I never realized you could
Pull the wool across my eyes
So naïve, I sympathized
I fell so hard I couldn’t tell
Bees that sting are sweet as hell
Baby what a big surprise
Boy you left me paralyzed

Big Girl Now

Written By: Kate Murphy

When she was 13, her mama & daddy told her
Lift your head up high on those shoulders
You could fly those big airliners
Or live in L.A. as a fashion designer
You’ve got the whole world in the palm of your hands
You’ve even got a date to the Valentine dance

You’re a big girl now
There ain’t nothing you can’t do
There’s a whole world out there
You can see it all if you want to
We know you’re gonna be somethin’
Don’t know where or how
But you’re a big girl now

When she was 16, they told her college was important
She laughed at them and ran off with her boyfriend
They tried to tell her that she was throwin’ it all away
That the fun that she was having now, wasn’t worth the price she’d pay
They pleaded for her not to leave with him that day
She looked at them and all that she could say

Is I’m a big girl now
There ain’t nothing I can’t do
You can’t tell me what to wear or who I should run to
I’m gonna do things my way
I’ll work it out somehow
I’m a big girl now, yeah, I’m a big girl now

So she moved in with her boyfriend
Time went by and she was pregnant and he was working late every night
When her friends came back with stories of parties and sororities
She smiled at them trying not to cry

Yeah, she was a big girl now
There wasn’t nothing she could do
She knew there was a world out there and saw the chances that she blew
But she made her own choices…and she could hear her parents voices…

You’re a big girl now
There ain’t nothing you can’t do
There’s a whole world out there
You can see it all if you want to
We know you’re gonna be somethin’
Don’t know where or how
But you’re a big girl, yeah, she had to be a big girl
She was a big girl now

When she was 18, she’d already lived a lifetime
