Feminist…..and funny! Those are two words that most people wouldn’t even use in the same sentence but that’s how singer-songwriter, Kate Reid, born April 13, 1971, describes the lyrical content of her music. Brought up in a straight, white, middle-class farm house in south central Ontario, Kate listened to the likes of Linda Ronstadt, John Denver, Kenny Rogers, Dolly Parton, The Eagles, The Beatles and Seals and Crofts. Singing was a great way to entertain herself and while working on the farm, Kate discovered her vocal chords at a very young age. Whether it was doing duets with her father, getting reprimanded by friends' parents for singing at their dinner table or covering Madonna hits on a tape recorder with her best friend, Kate discovered that she had a penchant, indeed, a passion for music. At the age of seventeen, she picked up the guitar and harmonica and began strumming Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin tunes. In her early adult years, Kate headed off to university where she discovered Ani Difranco, the Indigo Girls and shed her conservative upbringing and ideals for a more real and analytical way of being that exposed her to alternative lifestyles, cultural and social diversity, environmental and of course, feminist issues.

Once she completed university, Kate headed to Vancouver, BC where she lived for two years. However, it wasn’t until Kate packed up her GMC van and headed out to the Kootenay Mountains in the southern interior of BC, that she began writing her own songs. Confronted by a severe case of performance anxiety, she would force herself to perform for friends at gatherings and around campfires. It is evident now, after years of hard work and support from friends and fans that Kate has discovered herself to be a natural performer. Her stage presence will captivate you and her music will make you laugh, cry and sing along with her. Kate writes her songs from a woman-identified and introspective place: her lyrics comment on her experience as a woman in the world. But most importantly, her lyrics tell the stories of her life with rich imagery, emotion, insight and humour. She says, "I think I'll never run out of song material because I write about my life and what I see around me and both of these thing are ever-changing and dynamic!" As she gains more understanding about her life experiences, Kate’s music has developed a depth and an honesty that appeals to all ages and walks of life: from young children to women of all ages to people of gay and lesbian communities to redneck, backwoods men. "I think a part of it is the honesty with which I tell me stories and my ability to laugh at myself and make fun out of some of the situations I get myself in to. People can relate to my lyrics because they are about real life." Kate’s soulful lyrics, raw voice and simple, acoustic approach speak to what is joyful, challenging and real in each and every one of us.
