Kathi Burg

Kathi Burg’s new album, Sun in Rain is a pure expression of her heart, mind and soul. On it Kathi reveals her weaknesses and private thoughts with genuine emotion that comes through in powerfully delivered and well-constructed lyrics. She also provides a look into her faith. “I believe that the hope that is in me is from God”, says Kathi, “When I struggle, God is there and because I struggle, I write music.”

Kathi was born in La Jolla, California and moved north with her family to the small town of San Luis Obispo where she spent most of her younger years. She remembers her mom’s passion for singing and writing original music on the guitar and she recalls listening to her mom’s James Taylor, Phoebe Snow and Lou Rawls records. “I loved Lou Rawls’ voice…it was so soulful. I also appreciated the authentic feel of James Taylor’s music.”

Kathi grew up with musical instruments in the house and discovered that the keys on the piano could convey the same melancholy that she felt inside. “I began to put my deepest thoughts on paper and then to music. It was a great outlet for me. It coupled my love for music with my need to express what was going on inside me.” A relationship between words and music was formed and Kathi’s venture into singing and songwriting began.

In the late 90’s, Kathi was the vocalist for the Kathi Burg Band, which released three albums and performed for several years in the San Diego-Southern California area. Kathi’s voice has been alternatively described by critics as “gorgeous” (Amy Lotsberg, CollectedSounds.com) and as “fluid as one gets” (Les Reynolds, IndieMusic.com). With Sun in Rain, Kathi decided to pursue her dream of creating a solo album and wrote over 30 songs which were narrowed down to the 11 tracks on her new CD.

The title, Sun in Rain reflects Kathi’s thoughts toward God. “He has been the light in darkness for me, the hope in difficult times.” The album’s folk-rock sound, soulful lead vocals with lush backing vocals and thought-provoking lyrics are a pleasing combination. “I am always trying to say what I’m feeling, whether it stems from something I’ve personally been through or it’s my perception of someone else’s experience."
