Kathleen Smith

BandFolkPop

Folk nouveau with sprinkles of jazz and pop, a la Norah Jones, Joni Mitchell and a little bit of Paula Cole for attitude.

Biography

Somewhere between the inky black of night and the golden glow of day, between a rock and a hiding place, between feminism and human frailty and a burning desire to make the world a better place--that is where my songs live. When I'm lucky, I catch them & write them down.

Kathleen Smith found her calling writing songs while in theater school at USC. Since then, she has written (and co-written) over 80 songs, played shows in LA and Reno, and scored a documentary that plays on Current TV. “Waiting Around,” a song from her soon-to-be-released EP (dolls), has received airplay on KCRW, and Billboard online praised her live show, where she endears audiences with silly songs about chocolate, honest songs about love and loss, and once in a rare and lucky while, a sweetly timid tune that she plays on her guitar. Kathleen is currently preparing to release dolls in December and looks forward to touring during the summer of 2009.

Waiting Around

Written By: Kathleen Smith

Waiting around, waiting around
waiting for you to come around
waiting around, waiting around
waiting for you to change

Waiting around, waiting around
Waiting for you to save the day
Waiting around, waiting around
Waiting for you to stay

All my life
I have waited
for you
It’s true

Waiting around, waiting around
Waiting for you to tell me I’m fine
Waiting around, waiting around
Waiting for you to be mine

Waiting around, waiting around
waiting for you to listen to me
Waiting around, waiting around,
waiting for you to see

All my life
I have waited
for you
It’s true

How many times, how many times
How many times will I come back?
How many times, how many times
Will I feel what I lack?
When will I learn, when will I know,
When will I do this alone,
without you?

All my life
I have waited
for you
It’s true

Dolls

Dolls

Tell me that I’m beautiful,
tell me that I look real good
Tell me, hold your breath,
I’ll tell you everything you want to hear
Yes, dear

Tell me that you want me now,
look me quickly up & down
I’m all made up, I’ve done my hair,
I’m here for your enjoyment now

Dolls in the store don’t know what it’s like
to be dolls in real life
The plastic outside will never give way
to the blood and broken glass inside
Take us off the shelf so we can cry

Tell me that I’m really smart
Tell me that I’ve got a good heart
Buy me drinks and take me home,
and put me back when you are done
What fun

Dolls in the store don’t know what it’s like
To be dolls in real life
The plastic outside will never give way
To the blood and broken glass inside
Take us off the shelf so we can cry
Take us down so we can be alive

I build it up, I tear it down
I feel that I just don’t know how
To love myself the way that I would like to
I get so tired, I’m always trying
I can’t pretend. I’m not alright.
I feel that it is time for something new
I feel that it is time for something new

Dolls in the store don’t know what it’s like
To be dolls in real life
The plastic inside will never give way
To the blood and broken glass inside

Dolls in the store don’t know what it’s like
To be dolls in real life
The plastic inside will never give way
To the blood and broken glass inside
Take us off the shelf so we can cry
Take me down so I can be alive

Tinfoil Girl

Written By: Kathleen Smith

Tinfoil Girl

I’d like to tell a little tale
A tale about a girl
Who loved tinfoil more
Than anything in this whole world

This girl was clever as a fox,
and sharp as any nail
She used tinfoil to cover boxes,
Wrap her gifts, and send her mail
In foiled pots her plants survived
Her dished, tinned, still shined
In varied foils she’d stylized
Her house, her life, her blue green eyes

“Recyclable, so likeable, and great in every way!
She sang her tinfoil tribute at the start of every day

Find something you love and run with it
Find joy in every dime
It’s just your life, have fun with it
It soon runs out of time
Be all you are and then some more
Be joyful just to be
This tinfoil tale just goes to show
Do what you can to be happy

A bungee loving man adored
The strength, the stretch of bungee cord
His bungees strung up pots & pans
And all his worldly things
He liked to make small projects
From his wide array of strings
Including things like slingshots
For tiny balls of foil

“So flexible, impeccable, and strong in every way!”
He sang his bungee ballad at the start of every day

Find something you love and run with it
Find joy in every dime
It’s just your life, have fun with it
It soon runs out of time
Be all you are and then some more
Be joyful just to be
This tinfoil tale just goes to show
Do what you can to be happy

One fateful day, he flung away
Another ball of foil
That landed in the green front yard
Of tiny tinfoil girl
Bungee boy came down the road
To see where it had gone
And found the tiny tinfoil girl
Smiling on her lawn

They leapt with joy to find each other
of similar heart and soul

Find something you love and run with it
Find joy in every dime
It’s just your life, have fun with it
It soon runs out of time
Be all you are and then some more
Be joyful just to be
This tinfoil tale just goes to show
Do what you can to be happy
