BandFolk

Kathryn Claire has asserted herself in a new generation of traditionally-inspired musicians. Her violin-playing exhibits a technical grace which is matched only by her truly captivating voice and she possesses the rare ability to move seamlessly across genres. Her deep love and respect for traditional music has long been a driving influence and those roots can be heard in her own original music.

Biography

Early classical training naturally gave way to her own creative inclinations. Kathryn taught herself guitar at a young age in order to explore her own voice as a songwriter. She has spent years cultivating her unique style and approach to music as a violinist, singer and songwriter.

A consummate lover of harmony she has collaborated with the likes of Portland pop-rock stalwarts JONAH, Sassparilla, all-star Pogues tribute band KMRIA and The Portland Cello Project, as well as Hanz Araki, Ezra Holbrook, Chris Kokesh, Zak Borden, Heather Christie, Bryan Free, Matthew Hayward-Macdonald, Timothy Hull, Victor Johnson, Colleen Raney, Peter "Spud" Siegle and Skip von Kuske. She has performed her music around the US and Canada, Europe and has done several tours of Japan.

Kathryn's new album, Morning Comes Too Soon, was released in April 2011.  It features Jeff Baxter on piano, Jules Holbrook on bass and Scott McPherson on drums with guest performances by Hanz Araki, Ezra Holbrook, Andrew Lorish, Matthew Hayward-Macdonald and Skip Von Kuske. The album was recorded in an intense few days at the Secret Society in Portland, Oregon (with engineer Jordan Leff and co-producer Andrew Lorish) and has a very live, dynamic quality.  Explored in the 10 tracks are themes of transition, loss and discovery.  The songs retain the narrative and personal quality that she is known for while allowing a more mature sound to develop around them.

Lyrics

Guest

Written By: Kathryn Claire

I am a guest here
I am just passing through
And I could use a little time alone
But I'd sure like some time with you
Time is a rhythm
You've got yours and I've got mine
We can make our own seasons
We can make our own rhymes

When I closed my eyes
All I could see was green
She said send your breath out
To all the places you have never seen
So I sew these seeds
I give them water and light to grow
Then I walk away and I act surprised when they bloom
Cause you never know
You never know

Chorus
When the water falls it falls far
It falls far
And if you dare to dive well don't you dream of diving
Beyond where you are

I almost passed you by
But you were shining too bright
You were like that shooting star
That fell across the sky last night
I just want to listen
And let you send your songs out across the crowd
I'll be the first one standing
I'll be the first one to sing along out loud

Do not fear the passing days
And all that has not survived
There is life all around us
And this moment just arrived
Say your prayers for the sun
Greet the day with your chosen choir
There is music everywhere
So send your songs out across the wires

Please Don't Give Me Anything

Written By: Kathryn Claire

Please don't give me anything
It will only end up in a box
Broken necklaces
And beads of Ivory
And mis-matched socks
I cannot keep up with it
I surely shouldn't try
That is why I don't want anything
Except perhaps that twinkle in your eye

On the floor I spill the contents
Of this treasure chest
Count the coins, untie the knots
And throw away the rest
If it doesn't fit me
Then it must be out of style
all the while I don't want anything
Except perhaps a glimpse of your smile

Let me leave behind
A scent on your shirt, a song in your mind
That is all
Before I go....I just want you to know....
I just want you

I won't ask for anything
there's enough around to call my own
All the pages I have burned
return to me when I'm alone
Sitting in the the darkness I could lose it all or win
But I, I don't want anything except perhaps
the smell of your skin
except perhaps the smell of your skin
