"Kathryn Jones "YESTERDAY'S NEWS""

With an all -star cast of supporting musicians, a dazzling variety of musical styles, eleven original songs ( as well as a Hal David/Paul Hampton's Sea Of Heartbreak), Kathryn Jones' debut album, yesterday's News" is delightful , charming, entrancing and at times just a little sassy. bringing together elements of western swing, jump blues, country ,folk, gospel, slack key and rockabilly, im a genre Kathryn dubs "Coastal Country", her distinctive "voice" ( in both a vocal & lyrical sense) draws together these disparate musical strands to great effect.
Hailing from northern N.S.W. & having devoted much of the last 15 years to raising a large family, Kathryn has returned to her teenage musical passions with a vengeance.
Amidst the potpourri of styles, there's the folk sound of Georges' Song & dark Summers day, the spirit of Cab Calloway channelled into Bad Boy Benny, the gently swaying ukuleles underpinning Toffee Apples, and that delightful reading of sea Of Heartbreak, dedicated to the first man she ever loved ( her dad Lenny).
The arrangements (instrumental & vocal) are exquisite, and the production, courtesy of bass player Slim Pickens ( who also engineered the album) with kathryn,is assured, sympathetic and never gets in the way of Kathryn's distinctive and delightful vocals.
Having said that, the production leaves space throughout for the various standout soloists including Kirk Lorange on resonator guitar, Andrew Mills on Clarinet and Cleis Pearce on violin.
What a wealth of talent floating around Northern N.S.W. - Trad & Now Vol 10 no 9

"Kathryn Jones Yesterday's News"

And the Byron Shire just keeps on giving, this new one a collaboration between Brunswick Heads mum Kathryn Jones and local roots guru Slim Pickens, who has set up his own home studio.Singer-songwriter Jones has been getting back into the swing of things (literally) performing as a dup called The Swingin' Cowgirls with Anna van Riel, and a country bent noticeably informs this new LP. It's announced loud and proud in opening track "Hell OF A Ride", with a semi yodelled chorus and a great slide break by Kirk Lorange. With contributors like Lorange, Pickens, Stu eadie, Greg Sheehan and Jim Kelly, Jones is keeping good company and she and Pickens do a great job of keeping arrangements tastefully understated. There's also a bit of a tropical feel that permeates much of the album, particularly apparent on tracks like "Two By Two", "Toffee Apples" and "Boy". Calypso Cowgirl music? Why not? - Rhythms Magazine

"Kathryn Jones Yesterday's News"

Yesterday's News is refreshingly different..and thank goodness for that.Unlike many young artists, Kathryn Jones is not trying to be the next Taylor Swift or Miranda Lambert; she's just being herself.Kathryn has penned 11 delightful songs for her debut album Yesterday's News...a nostalgically charming debut album with 1950's cowgirl touches on the opening track "Hell Of a Ride". The dulcet tones of the ukulele are featured on songs like Toffee Apples, and Sway With Me features an enjoyable accordion.Kathryn projects a carefree attitude on many of the lighthearted songs and there is a real cheekiness on the swinging "BAD BOY BENNY"...and yet there is much more to this girl! The song she dedicates to her father "Sea Of Heartbreak" is not one of her own, however, it demonstrates her ability to tap into deeply felt emotions without any falsehood or insincerity. Kathryn Jones may not be the next "pop princess" but her performance on this recording has an endearing richness of character that is much more appealing - Rosie Adsett - Country Update Magazine Issue 61

KATHRYN JONES : Yesterday‘s News
12 compositions, 3 correspondent totalement à ce contexte : Hell Of
Sway With
Dans More When I Ought
Sun To Shine se
Sea Of

"Brunswick Heads mum no longer yesterday's news"

Just over a week ago, Brunswick Heads-based ‘coastal country’ singer-songwriter and
mum of four sons, Kathryn Jones, was lapping up the spotlight at the Tamworth Country
Music Festival, launching her second album ‘Yesterday’s News’.
It’s the first time Kathryn has been invited to play at Tamworth, which she describes as a
‘real privilege and confidence boost’, particularly since she returned to her music career
just two years ago after a 14-year hiatus spent caring for her growing family.
As well as playing her own gigs at Tamworth, Kathryn was busy supporting the
acclaimed Clelia Adams and the River Valley Express at three sold-out shows.
“It was a totally amazing experience. One minute I’m at home up to my armpits cooking
and washing and the next thing I’m all hammed up in my hat and boots, band in tow
strumming and singing my guts out to hundreds of people,” she said.
“It was an incredible buzz playing to so many people and receiving praise from high
calibre country musicians was a definite highlight.”
The title of Kathryn’s new album, ‘Yesterday’s News’, was inspired by her extended
break from singing and song-writing to focus on family life with husband Phil, Sebastian
16, Jasper 14, Oliver 11, Kasey-Joe 9 and lots of chooks.
“I’d long wondered how I was going to fit back into the music industry – which got me
thinking about whether I was just going to be ‘yesterday’s news’?” she said.
“I’m sure other mums out there know how hard it is, after years of concentrating on your
family, to have the guts to really get out there and put yourself on the line.
“Music is so much a part of me and who I am, I don’t see it as a choice – apart from
family, music is really it for me.”
Kathryn’s focus and determination has paid off already. Her return to music saw her
produce EP ‘Oh Brother Come Home’ in 2007, which won Best Lyrics at the 2009
Dolphin Awards.
‘Yesterday’s News’ is the next step for her musically and she has her fingers crossed for
an invitation to play alongside other talented local musicians at the Bluesfest in April.
In the meantime, her schedule is filling up fast with gigs booked as far afield as
Invacargill, in southern New Zealand.
“The big challenge though is juggling all of this and living with five males – it’s very
intense,” she said.
The boys agree. With mum on the road, they have had to learn to do the cooking and
cleaning and wash their own clothes.
And they each have a veggie patch to tend so they can sell produce to the local health
food store and make some pocket money.
They say they are proud of their mum and the success of her new album and happy she is
doing what she loves, and although she is away a lot they get on fine without her.
Kathryn Jones and Swingin’ Cowgirl partner Anna van Riel will play at the Australia
disaster relief fundraiser at the Mullumbimby RSL on Sunday.
The show starts at noon. - Byron Shire News

"Kathryn Jones Oh Brother Come Home"

Kathryn Jones hails from Brunswick Heads and is quickly emerging as a serious artist and is also busy raising her family of four boys.
She has won a North coast Dolphin Award for Best Lyrics with the title track of this C.D, the very personal "Oh Brother Come Home".She was also a finalist for Best Female Vocal.Kathryn plays guitar and is accompanied by Pat Gunderson on guitar and keyboard. The pair create a mellow, easy to listen sound.Kathryn has a memorable voice and the quality of it shines in every track.I enjoyed all the tracks on the C.D. Kathryn is currently writing songs for her next C.D & if it is as good as this one it will be worth waiting for.Highly recommended.
