Katie Leigh is an artist who believes in the power of honest expression. In simple lyrics she is able to ask honest questions about life, love, and faith, only to reveal that she is very normal girl with strengths and weaknesses. It is clear that she is singing of her life's trials and tribulations. Katie Leigh a true California girl, has traveled many roads and has been influenced by the steps she has taken along the way. Born into a family with a pattern of uprooting and seeking new things, Katie discovered a home wherever she had music.
Katie Leigh's music is a mix between folk and pop. Most of her influence comes from James Taylor, yet there is an undeniable mainstream edge. Other influences include Patti Griffin, Carol King, Allison Krauss, Jenny Lewis, and her father. She grew up in a family full of musicians and cannot imagine life without musical expression. Her childhood was full of family sing-a-longs and recitals, some more impromptu than others. (Katie was known for writing songs before she could spell her name). While Katie was encouraged to practice piano and saxophone, she felt they lacked the crucial ingredient for truly expressing who she was--- her voice. In 8th grade she instantly found a connection with the guitar. Her dad taught her three chords with which she wrote her first song. "It's amazing how much is possible with only three chords!" Katie states when referring to her childhood songs.
In high school she escaped difficult family conflicts by finding a way to voice her concerns, hopes, fears, and dreams through music. All it took was her Taylor, a journal, and a pen. To Katie music is something to which everyone can relate. "We don't think about it too often, but everyone has that one song that reminds them of a moment in time. Just the familiarity of a song can bring up old feelings, tastes, smells, everything! That's what's so amazing about music, and that's why I want to be a part of it," says Katie. Katie expresses herself in hopes of making a difference in the world one song at a time.
