Katie Toupin and Matt Myers

 Louisville, Kentucky, USA
BandFolkSinger/Songwriter

Katie Toupin and Matt Myers weave together powerful vocals and deeply harmonic guitar work, with a lyrically poetic style, that translates a musical nostalgia for the great eras of folk, rock, blues, and country to the modern scene. Truly unique, but you'd swear you'd heard them before.

Biography

Katie Toupin

Katie Toupin grew up around two things: music and horses. Her father played guitar and loved learning new music. When Katie would sing to the Beatles or Bonnie Raitt on the radio, he’d tell Katie, “Don’t be shy. Sing loud.”

But Katie’s first love was riding horses, and she was good - becoming an instructor in her teens.

When a snowboarding accident ended Katie’s riding instructor career, she made a mission trip to the Dominican Republic, where, on a beach one night, as she played and sang to herself, a group of tourists gathered around and wanted to hear more. “It felt like God was calling me to sing.”

After the trip, Katie sang and played countless hours with her father, honing her skills, preparing for what was to replace her lost career as a horsewoman.

Matt Myers

Matt Myers started playing guitar when he was thirteen “to appeal to women.” At first fascinated by neo classical rock, he later became interested in blues, listening to old recordings of Albert King and Albert Collins.

That influence blossomed into a blues band with his cousins during high school. When the band broke up, Matt enrolled in a university music program, but, preferring to apply music theory to guitar work rather than homework, he eventually left to pursue music full time.

Now, both the formal training and blues influences are evident in Matt’s thoughtful approach to acoustic guitar.

Katie & Matt

As soon as Katie heard Matt, she introduced him to her father and the three were soon playing local venues. When Katie’s father felt Matt and Katie could go it alone, they did, playing their first gig with a whopping three-song repertoire.

Katie and Matt now write their own songs, combining their varied talents in a unique style influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dave Rawlings, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, the Felice Brothers, Gillian Welch, and Neil Young.

With Katie’s powerful vocals, Matt’s appealing guitar work, and their earthy, lyrical songs, Katie Toupin and Matt Myers are poised on the cusp of a compelling career.

Lyrics

Santa Ana Wind

Written By: Katie Toupin & Matt Myers

Where did Daddy put his gun
I've been thinking about the old canyon sun
Since I saw the divas in the window sills
They put bronze in their skins 'til no more could get in

The Santa Wind's gonna burn me down
Long afternoons and a swing band sound
Long night in chains
The smell of fire and cheap perfume remain

Run, Run, Mama said run
Don't forget your keys and your sheets of carbon
They'll come in handy when you're older
And all your final papers lay heavy on your shoulder

The Santa Wind's gonna burn me down
Long afternoons and a swingband sound
Long night in chains
The smell of fire and cheap perfume remain

Where did you go that Summer night
I've been thinking about it since I've forgotten how to cry
And I saw my reflection in the stainless steel stove
And I said it's time to get over that one don't you know

The Santa Wind's gonna burn me down
Long afternoons and a swingband sound
Long night in chains
The smell of fire and cheap perfume remain

Fever

Written By: Katie Toupin & Matt Myers

Fever, I've got a fever
Only cure is those country blues
Fever, O this fever
Making my heart swell to two
Gave up my whiskey ways
Put em in their Sunday graves
Felt it was the right thing to do

Fever, O this fever
Get down the top shelf tonight
Fever, O this fever
There's no hope in being satisfied
Gave up my whiskey ways
Put em in their Sunday graves
Felt it was a hard thing to lose

Fever, I got a fever
Not letting nothing on my mind
Fever, oh my fever
its breaking its sweat tonight
Gave up my whiskey ways
Put em in their Sunday graves
Felt it was a hard thing to lose

Choo Choo Train

Written By: Katie Toupin & Matt Myers

White brick fireplace and gold piano pegs by your feet
These Kinds of things ya know, these kinds of pleasures don't come cheap
And I swear to god there ain't no more money left to take down in this town
sweet locomotive baby sheds all the layers to the ground

And that choo choo train will roll on by
Where the parked cars stay for miles and miles
And the old steel tracks start to shine
Where the dust once lay on a silver dime

Wooden stairs and wicker chairs made by the ones who work at the county fair
They keep doing business while the money in their hands all disappears
Your family they get old but your young in the dark and the cold
You got a pretty face but your smile has already been bought and sold

And that choo choo train will roll on by
Where the parked cars stay for miles and miles
And the old steel tracks start to shine
Where the dust once lay on a silver dime

Roll Me Blues

Written By: Katie Toupin & Matt Myers

Want to go down to New Orleans
Barroom girl and dead head scenes
Oh, I saw the light
These places I wanna go
They rock me and roll me all night

Wanna go down to oceans green
Olive skin and magazines
Oh, I saw the light
These places I wanna go
They rock me and roll me all night

Once knew a poet from Sierra Leone
Borrowed his matches and telephone
Oh, I saw the light
These places I wanna go
They rock me and they roll all night

Rockin Chair

Written By: Katie Toupin & Matt Myers

City Lights are oh so dead my baby
Oversize coat and backward smile
I'd like you to stay and talk awhile
Cuz I'm hanging on by a thread
And my flowers are dying in their flowery beds
And the city lights filled with newlyweds, oh baby

Who's in my rockin chair
Whose watch is sitting there
Charades you play backstage they aint fair

The song you sang in my ear my baby
The hardwood floors chill my bone
And all six strings ring soft and slow
Drink my coffee from a paper cup
I'm holding on but I've had enough
Of your city lights filled with the up on their luck, my baby

Who's in my rockin chair
Whose watch is sitting there
Charades you play backstage they ain't fair

Summer night and a flat bed truck, my baby
Winter winds are rolling in
I can't keep from caving in
Cast your net into my sea
I'm so close by underneath
And your city lights shower a frozen street, my baby
