"Cover Story Review"

"Katrin Roush has a soaring, electrifying voice reminiscent of Bonnie Raitt. Thick and resonating with body and soul, Katrin sings with the passion of a woman using her last breath on earth. Watch for Katrin to become more than just a local icon. With a voice this powerful, the world is at her beckoned call. "
- Douglas Sloan, Metronome Magazine

"Metronome Magazine Cover Feature 2009"

"Confidence. That's only one of Katrin's many strong points. Determinaiton. She maintains a busier gig schedule that most popular touring bands. Musically. Katrin instinctively finds a song in the world around her like hummingbirds find nectar in flowers. Focus. If Katrin has any say the cosmic universe, she could become as well known as her contemporary sisters, Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, Ani Difranco and Jewel" - Metronome Magazine

""Soul Wide Open" review"

Soul Wide Open is clearly the work of an artist who knows just what she wants and goes after it with the confidence that greatness brings. Though she tackles many moods and feels in the course of this ten-song set, Katrin’s grooves and voice tie it all together and make the tunes go down like a real album (remember those?) and not a mere collection of singles. Indeed, there is enough musical firepower here to start a national blaze if she is given the opportunity to seduce the music world at large. Here’s hoping that she gets that chance sooner rather than later, as talent like this deserves the biggest audience it can get. - Mike O'Cull, Riveting Riffs Magazine

"Block Island Music Festival Revue"

“With a melodic, passionate songwriting style, the Boston-based Katrin is in a word; spellbinding.”

"CD Review 2004"

Katrin’s voice is sweet, soulful and eminently likable, and her songs typically have something to make them stand out. The music moves past typical folk-rock, injecting something different to keep things exciting-the tight arrangements, the bongos on “Love is a Dance”, the occasional odd atmosphere. The fact that the disc flourishes yet remains stripped down makes for some of her most enjoyable work.

"Lowell Sun Artists Spotlight '07"

Singing her soul clean

Imagine every night the audience is yours for the taking. You walk out onto the empty stage, peering through the darkness to see the blurry, faceless crowd. Your mission is to reach out and grab at least one stranger and share a life experience.
Welcome to the life of Katrin, a Boston-based folk singer who simply wants to do what she loves and share what she's learned with someone, anyone. Tonight, at the Devens Grille, don't miss your opportunity to partake in all Katrin has to offer ... to be that person that she touches with a serene, gentle pop/folk/rock touch.
"I get put into the genre of folk, although a lot of my music has more of a folk-rock, bluesy, soulful, neo-folk sound, rather than traditional," Katrin explains. "I think it's because I'm living in the here and now, in society and the modern world."
Raised on Joni Mitchell, The Police, and Led Zeppelin, Katrin has been singing since the ripe age of three. "I had a classical upbringing. I took violin lessons as a child and sang in some choruses. It really opened me up to a world of music."
Hitting the Boston circuit in 1993, Katrin has performed in the Faneuil Hall Marketplace Street Performers Program for the past three summers, and plans to do it again this year.
"It's like a sociology experiment," she reflects. "You get to see the way people react to you in an environment where there's no barrier. It's a really pure exchange."
Her reach extends beyond the Bay State. She's won recognition in 2005's Solarfest, a singer/songwriter competition held in Vermont; in 2003, took second place in West Virginia's Mountain Stage Music Festival, and has ventured across the pond to the Fringe Arts Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland.
The solo artist has played with bands Zinnia Bloom and Luna Flux.
"Most of the time I just perform myself with bands based around my name, but I've been the main songwriter in the bands I've been in. The biggest challenge of playing solo is you have to stand on your own the whole time," Katrin said.
"It's a lot more about reaching out to the audience and touching them and interacting with them. It feels a lot more naked and vulnerable. I just try and find my magic formula as a solo performer, have solid footing, and keep things rolling."
To keep her audience engaged, Katrin employs an alternative approach to songwriting.
"I started experimenting with different tunings to see what I can make with this one instrument. I try and experiment with open chord tunings and feel my way around the guitar - I play by ear. The standard guitar tuning is usually E A D G B E. So then I try a more alternative tuning, like C G C G C E, or G A D G A D. It creates a different droning sound," she said.
Tonight she'll be joined by drummer Mike Casano and lead guitarist Scott Tarulli, a Berklee professor producing her third album, due out within the next six months. For the last two albums, Out of Nothing and Nature Spirit, Katrin had enlisted the help of bassists Jesse Bastos and Jim Lamond.
"For me, singing is a healing process. I get up there and sing my heart out, and it makes me feel like I sang my soul clean. I feel like I have something to say and want to share it with people."
