Biography

With the mind of a diplomat and the musicality of a modern pop diva, Katrina Carlson is an artist with true mass appeal. Her stirring, vibrant songs embody universal themes of love and strength that are central to humanity. The critics love her albums, and so do Carlson’s growing legions of dedicated fans.

Carlson grew up in Paradise Valley, Ariz., the youngest of 11 children. By the age of 12 she was playing both piano and guitar, and composing songs to entertain her family. Her early talents for songwriting and performance set the stage for Carlson’s bright future.

Initially, Carlson did not formally pursue a musical career. She attended Brown University, where she majored in international relations, foreign policy and diplomacy. After graduation, Carlson found herself at a crossroads. Dealing with a recent family tragedy and feeling disillusioned by the political climate in Washington, D.C., she moved to New York for some “musical therapy.” Carlson earned admission into the Manhattan School of Music and Brooklyn College’s opera program. During this time, she expanded her creative repertoire and joined an Off-Broadway Cole Porter review. Carlson also appeared in the 1999 indie romantic comedy Special Delivery, and contributed two songs to the film’s soundtrack.
In September 2001, Carlson released her debut record, Apples for Eve, with songs co-written and produced by Emmy winner Ron Cohen. Soon, Carlson’s music spread its way throughout American culture. Her music graced the soundtracks of television shows Dawson’s Creek, Lost and Passions, as well as the feature film Go Tigers!. As a result of these successes, Carlson was selected as a 2002 finalist in the Rolling Stone/Jim Beam Emerging Artist series.

Carlson’s second record, Untucked, spent a remarkable 18 combined months on the Billboard and R&R Adult Contemporary charts. The romantic pop ballad “I Know You by Heart” is a powerful and moving duet featuring Benny Mardones -- best known for his 1980s hit single “Into the Night.” Follow-up tunes such as “Count on Me,” “Suddenly Beautiful,” and Carlson’s skillful rendering of The Cars’ classic “Drive” are musical gems that brought the album well-deserved praise including an award for “Best Independent Pop Album” at the 2003 Los Angeles Music Awards.

After releasing Untucked, Carlson continued her sonic diversity by expanding her 1970s-era, soft-rock sound to include a deeper, edgier pop-rock sound. This creative evolution has shaped Carlson’s latest effort, which will be released in mid-August. The aptly named Here and Now, produced by Ron Aniello (Barenaked Ladies, Guster, Lifehouse), offers a lush collection of sweeping power ballads and upbeat pop tunes. A major highlight is the title track, inspired by the moment Carlson first held her then-newborn baby, Ruby Rose, and mused over experiences and lessons learned in her own life. In Carlson’s words, “I look for the beauty in the good, the bad and the ugly alike. And I count it all a blessing.”

Here and Now’s first single is a modern take on the Howard Jones classic “No One is to Blame,” with a guest appearance by Jones himself. With songs such as “Be the One,” “First To Say Goodbye” and “Everyone Gets Lost,” Carlson again demonstrates her enrichment as both an individual and a professional musician. This growth is equally evident in the diversity of Carlson’s live performances. While on tour, she has opened for such artists as Kenny Loggins, Chicago, Eddie Money and Rick Springfield. Priding herself in the ability to “mix it up” onstage, Carlson offers audiences everything from an unplugged acoustic show to a full rock band extravaganza. “Lately, I've been throwing in snippets of opera!” Carlson added, laughing. Carlson loves that her audiences include dancing teenagers, hip seniors and everything in between.

As a songwriter, the former actress explains that she envisions her songs as “mini-movies,” complete with characters, storylines and plot resolutions. Much like contemporaries Sheryl Crow and Natalie Merchant, Carlson views herself in various shades, and by that standard, Here and Now is a rainbow of textured life stories.

Carlson says, “I believe in personal responsibility; you own what is yours that way.” But she also realizes that behind every great musician is a dedicated team and a sacrificing family. Carlson has all of these gifts, which allow her to live life on her own terms. “I’ve always embraced living in the moment, seizing every opportunity,” she says. This new album reflects that inner clarity that, for Katrina Carlson, truly is Here and Now.

Lyrics

Be The One

Written By: (K.Carlson / J. Denim)

How could you know how lost I was
I never showed anyone
No one could reach me until you
Made it through
Don’t want to die before I live
Don’t want to take before I give
I wanna feel the way I do when I’m with you

Chorus
Be the one
Now before the moment’s gone
Break me down and wake me up inside
Set me free
Don’t let the darkness cover me
Be the one to make me come alive
Be the one

I knew what love was all about
And did my best to shut it out
Thought I could never hurt again
Wouldn’t let it in
But I believe there’s something true
Something real to hold on to
And now I know I’m ready to let go
I know you could …

(Chorus)
Be the one
Take me where I’ve never gone
Break me down and wake me up inside
Set me free
Don’t let the darkness cover me
Be the one to make me come alive
Be the one

To make love again (Together it feels like home)
Be the one to make love again (Together it feels like home)
Don’t want to be alone, don’t want run anymore
I wanna fly … Be together
I wanna fly ….

Be the one
Now before the moment’s gone
Break me down and wake me up inside
Set me free
Don’t let darkness cover me
Be the one to make me come alive
Be the one

You’re the one to make me come alive
We’re together … we’re together … here forever

Lost

Written By: (K.Carlson)

Lost (Katrina Carlson)

Lost
(Carlson)

Lost dreams, lost at sea
Sailin' the land of milk and honey
Lost love, afraid to say
What got lost along the way
Lost cause, tug of war
Won the battle don't know what for
Lost lives, the buried cost
How could I ever have been so

(Chorus)
Lost in your eyes in the rush
In the power of your touch
Caught in the heart of a rising storm
Burned by the fire that keeps me warm
Everyone gets lost
Everyone gets lost

We get lost like children left behind
Running scared and running blind
Like innocence of the soul
Digging out of another hole
We're lost like time turned to dust
Going faster going bust
Like lovers stars get crossed
Nothing's gained when I'm getting

(Chorus)

And I got lost in the wonder and the tide
It pulled me under and I
And I hit rock bottom ground
I was in deep and fading
You were waiting
You lifted me up and that's when I got found

(Chorus)

Everyone... gets found
Everyone... gets found
Everyone... Oh, yeah...
Everyone... Oh, yeah...

Break My Fall

Written By: (K.Carlson/J.Denim)

Can you see me? Deep inside behind these walls I’ve made
Need to reach you remind me of the love not fade away

I’m standing at the edge of something,
To see the ground, I’m inching out
I’m hopin’ that your arms are open as I’m coming down
Won’t you break my, break my, won’t you break my fall

Can you hear me? A melody carried by the wind
Need to reach you before our story comes to an end so we can begin again

I’m standing at the edge of something,
To see the ground, I’m inching out
I’m hopin’ that your arms are open as I’m coming down
Won’t you break my, break my, won’t you break my

Falling weightless amazing grace embracing gravity
Faithless, I guess, if I believe then could this be… flying?

I’m standing at the edge of something…
Won’t you break my, break my,
won’t you break my, break my, won’t you break my fall

First to Say Goodbye

Written By: (K.Carlson/J.Denim)

Late nights alone in the kitchen trying to separate fact from fiction
I’m going crazy how much more can I take?
Its getting dark, the walls are talking, I’m giving up but then you walk in
I’m reachin’ out to hold you but it’s all a mistake if

It’s over, I don’t wanna be afraid to say
It’s over, maybe were better off this way
It’s over, love either grows or it dies
But no one wants to be the first to say goodbye

You used to get me I got you, now nothing seems to get through
I’m trying to feel you but the feeling is gone
You’re side of the bed’s been empty, even when you’re there it’s empty
My heart is breaking, but I’ve got to be strong if

It’s over, I don’t wanna be afraid to say
It’s over, maybe we’re better off this way
It’s over, love either grows or it dies
But no one wants to be the first to say

Never say never, never say forever
You know I love you but we just can’t stay together cause it’s

O-----ver…now it’s
Over, who’s gonna be the one to say
It’s over, who’s gonna turn and walk away
It’s over, love either grows or it dies
No one wants to be the first to say……goodbye

Here and Now

Written By: (K.Carlson/J.Denim)

VERSE 1:
Heaven knows if I were given one more day
At the end of my life I’d spend it this way
But Heaven comes and goes and what I’m feeling now
Makes the ups and the downs not matter somehow

CHORUS:
Is this what love is about?
Never wanting to be without you
You make me feel like there’s only
Here & now

VERSE 2:
The sun could turn to dust the day could fall away
I wouldn’t care as long as you stay
And all the trouble Life has put me through
I’m gonna let it go, and hold on to you
The world fades away
Till there’s nothing left but today

CHORUS:
Is this what love is about?
Never wanting to be without you
You make me feel like there’s only
Here & now

BRIDGE: Ah…….Ah….

CHORUS:
Is this what love is about (…is this what love is about?)
Never wanting to be without you (… never wanting to be…)
You make me feel like there’s only
Here & Now

Hey hey, yeah
Is this what love is about (Here & Now)
Never wanting to be without you
You make me feel like there’s only
Here & now

TAG:
Heaven knows if I could buy one more day
I’d spend it this way

When You Kiss Me

Written By: (Carlson / Denim)

Constellations in the heavens
I would stare at them searching for a sign
I was jaded separated from emotions
For a long, long time
So it's a mystery, mystery
How you do what you do to me

(Chorus)
I need you more than I want to
And I'm afraid I might lose control
But maybe if I let you in
Maybe love will begin, when you kiss me I'll know
I'll know, when you kiss me I'll know

Buried in a secret garden I had hardened my heart
So it wouldn't break
I was numb barely breathin'
I was sleepin' now I'm wide awake
Deep inside, deep inside
You brought my heart back to life

(Chorus)

(Chorus)

If I could love you, love you, love you, love you oh
I could love you, love you, love you, love you

When you kiss me I'll know
When you kiss me I'll know

The Secret

Written By: (Carlson/Denim)

You made me smile, it took awhile to get over myself
You made me want to climb a ladder
Take my heart off the high shelf
So what if somehow
I can't hide from what you're seeing
You know how to get inside of me

(Chorus)
Yeah, your love took me by surprise and
Yeah, your love opened up my eyes and
Yeah, you knew the secret, you knew the secret
And you whispered it to me

You made me feel
Your love could heal the deepest dark in me
You made me want to tell you everything
Things I never knew were inside of me
So what if I am risking all my heart and soul
So what, you're worth it all to me

(Chorus)

So what if we share something irreplacable
Something no one else could know, yeah

(Chorus)

Some Small Way

Written By: (K. Carlson)

Somehow, someday, somewhere, someway
Sorry won't be hard to say
Sometime, someplace, some stroke of grace
Will stop the rain, the ash and gray and someday

(Chorus)
Somehow things will change
Someway I'll find the strength
To love again and let you in to stay
In some small way

Some win, some lose, some take, some choose
To leave some good behind
Some have nothing, I had something
Everything when you were mine and someday

(Chorus)

In some small way
You know I blame myself for letting it go this far
In some small way
I want you to pay for being less than you are
I want to say goodbye
Don't even want to try
But then someway I find
Some small faith that someday

Somehow things will change
Someway I'll find the strength
To hold on to the hope of better days
Somehow, someway, somewhere, someway
In some small way
In some small way

Enough

Written By: K. Carlson

You painted a picture
Colored a moment
So I could believe in love
You're beautiful
Am I enough

One perfect sunrise
A purple-orange sunset
Could never describe what you have stirred up
You're everything
I've ever dreamed of

But am I strong enough
Lucky enough, stupid enough
Am I smart enough to be who I am
So you'll understand I am enough

My eyes weren't looking
My arms were not open
No path had been paved, you just walked up
You gave me love
And I ate it up

But am I strong enough
Lucky enough, stupid enough
Am I smart enough to be who I am
So I'll understand I am enough

You're beautiful,
But what if it rains
The seasons will change
As time passes by

Are you strong enough
Lucky enough, stupid enough
Are you smart enough
To stay here with me
So we could see
We could see this love is enough

Daisy In Chains

Written By: (Carlson/Denim)

I've been waiting patiently all winter
Plucking paper daisies until summertime
Will the melting snow lead me to your door
Help our garden grow like it did before

(Chorus)
Love me, love me not
Tangled up in guessing games
Tell me is it love that we got
Cuz I'm drowning in the pouring rain
Like a daisy in chains, a daisy in chains

I've been laying down in fields of thistles
Making my bed where roses used to bloom
Staring at the sky hoping for a sign
Watching clouds go by so the sun will shine

(Chorus)

Words are spoken promises broken
Sowing the seeds of doubt
Please talk to me if we're meant to be
Then we can work it out

Love me, love me not
Tangled up in guessing games
Tell me is it love that we got
Cuz I'm drowning in the pouring rain
I can take just about anything
But there's some things I can't explain

Like a daisy in chains
A daisy in chains
Like a daisy in chains
I've been waiting
Patiently all winter

Enough

Feel For Me

Written By: (Carlson/Denim)

Can you feel it, do you feel anything
Am I standing too close to you, baby
I can't help it, my heart's a quiet storm
So I was wondering maybe

Could you teach your heart to feel for me
If you could I know that we would be so happy
If you could teach your heart to feel for me
How beautiful this love could be

You know how to reach inside my heart
And bring out the best in me
There's more than I guessed there'd be
With you I've learned what love is all about
So if you're testing me make any request of me

Could you teach your heart to feel for me
If you could I know that we would be so happy
Could you teach your heart to feel for me
Or am I the only one who can see
How beautiful this love could be

I know, I know
I know you want to let me down easy
I know, I know
I know you like me as a friend
But I love you, I love you
I love you completely
It's not fair why can't you care
Why can't I be what you want

Could you ever teach your heart to feel for me
If you could I know that we would be so happy
Could you ever teach your heart to feel for me
Or am I the only one who can see
How beautiful this love could be

No One is To Blame

Written By: Howard Jones

You can look at the menu
But you just can't eat
You can feel the cushions
But you can't have a seat
You can dip your foot in the pool
But you can't have a swim
You can feel the punishment
But you can't commit the sin

(Chorus)
And you want her and she wants you
We want everyone
And you want her and she wants you
No one, no one, no one ever is to blame

You can build a mansion
But you just can't live in it
You're the fastest runner
But you're not allowed to win
Some break the rules
And live to count the cost
The insecurity is the thing that won't get lost

(Chorus)

We want everyone
But you can't have everything
You know, we are all the same
No one is to blame

You can see the summit but you can't reach it
It's the last piece of the puzzle
But you just can't make it fit
Doctor says you're cured
But you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds
But your hopes go down the drain

(Chorus)
No one ever is to blame
No one ever is to blame

Rock Your Beautiful

Rock Your Beautiful
By Katrina Carlson & Jefferson Denim

You gotta mind of your own
You gotta light to lead you home
No matter where you go, let yourself be known

Don’t let the world define you
Only you know what’s inside you
Whenever you're feelin’ down, don’t forget who you are

You’re free…
To make your entrance
Free to make a difference
You can make it happen, anything, if you believe

You’re free…
Stand and be counted
Make the world take notice
It’s all inside, let it come alive
Rock your beautiful
Rock your beautiful
Rock your beautiful
You are beautiful

Through the noise and confusion
Disappointment and delusion
Gotta learn your lessons and your blessings will come

Everybody’s in such a hurry
Take your time and don’t you worry
Listen to your own voice don’t forget who you are

You’re free…
To make your entrance
Free to make a difference
You can make it happen, anything if you believe

You’re free…
Stand and be counted
Make the world take notice
It’s all inside, let it come alive
Rock your beautiful
Rock your beautiful
Rock your beautiful
You are beautiful

(Spoken/rap bridge)
I am my own person, my own voice, I choose to love it is my choice, I can see every woman who came before in me and we are beautiful
I am the light, the chance I want to take, the change I want to make, everyone is free, free to be so sing with me and rock your beautiful

You’re free…
