""Katrin the Thrill: Music That Will Hypnotize You""

Katerina Panopoulou is an untypically dark indie rock/alternative singer/songwriter from Athens, Greece. Her music has been described as a cross between PJ Harvey and Radiohead, and she has been recommended by publications such as Target Audience Magazine, Pure Grain Audio and Loud Horizon. She started creating music as a teenager with friends, and that's when she got the bug. One year later when the fledgling band broke up, she got herself her first electric guitar and wrote her own songs.

In 2001 she moved to England to study music. Two years later, back in Greece she teamed up with guitarist Gina Dimakopoulou, violinist Katerina Michailidi, bassist Iakovos Siaparinas, drummer Dimitris Panagiotopoulos and formed the band Dementia Praecox. After many live performances in Greece, she moved to London to further her studies. During her stay in London, she performed as a solo acoustic artist. In 2007 under the indissoluble name Katrin the Thrill, she participated in the Coca Cola Soundwave competition and won a place among the five best music acts. The video clip of the song "If You Believe in Dreams" was shot and the track was included in the "Music on the Coke side of Life" compilation. For the next two years Katrin the Thrill performed in Greece at Terra Vibe, Gagarin 205, Vrachon Theater, European Music Day, Bios, Athens Gay Pride, Festival Against Racism, Indie Free Festival and was the opening act for Manic Street Preachers, Greg Dulli and Electrelane.

In 2009, following the devastating fires that swept through Greece, as well as many other places around the world, the concept for "Earth Is Calling Us" EP was devised, and the need to take action and help reforestation was fully realized.

In December 2010, "Earth Is Calling Us" was released as her first solo project with Gina on guitar, Maria Roka on bass and Tolis Toleas on drums. The EP is dedicated to the earth and the environment and part of the proceeds goes towards the reforestation of the burned forests of Greece. In January 2012 the first reforestation was successfully completed.

In December 2011, after eight months of intensive studio work, her new album was ready to be released, but an unfortunate event postponed everything; at the last minute the record label deal broke down and all production costs needed to be covered for the album to see the light of day. A successful Indiegogo online campaign was organized, and Katrin?s fans raised over $2,000 to bring her unique vision, "Evil Eye Charm" to reality.

She sounds like Melissa Etheridge and Alanis Morissette with a bit of Kristy Lee thrown in. Her music is very mellow and will put you in a euphoric trance. Her music is very haunting. She has been featured at multiple festivals, including European Music Day, Indie Free Festival, and Athens Gay Pride.

Her new album "Evil Eye Charm", is set to be released on September 10, 2012. - Technorati

""Katrin the Thrill: an amalgamation of sounds, supplication for Earth""

Working hard to define a signature sound, Katrin has hit on an amalgamation of sounds that recalls Radiohead, PJ Harvey and even Bjork, while remaining wholly original.

As anyone who watches the news knows, Greece is in the middle of an economic crisis that, if not resolved, threatens the entire European union. In listening to Katrin The Thrill’s upcoming release, Evil Eye Charm, due out September 10, one can hear the swirling discontent of that nation.

Earth Is Calling Us
In 2009, following the catastrophic fires that swept through Greece, Katrin began working on the concept for the Earth Is Calling Us EP. While creating the music, Katrin was buoyed by the need to take action and help the reforestation efforts. In December 2010, Earth Is Calling Us was released as her first solo project. The EP was dedicated to the earth and the environment and part of the proceeds went towards the reforestation of the burned forests of Greece. In January 2012, the first reforestation was successfully completed.
Katerina Panopoulou has been creating music since she was a teenager. Throughout her young adulthood, she traveled and studied musical styles, all while enjoying the alternative music explosion of the late ’90s/early ’00s. After a few projects fell through, in 2007, Katerina formed Katrin the Thrill.

Buttressed by the success of the EP, Katrin began work on her first full length album shortly thereafter. In speaking with her, she describes the process as very different from the recording of the EP.
“With the EP, we only worked with one producer and our vision was singular. We wanted to talk about our Earth and make people aware of how badly it had been broken by the fires, Katrin said.“ “When we started work on the full length, we wanted to experiment with new sounds and we worked with many producers. Many people have had their hands on the songs and have helped shape them into what they are now.”
Katrin alluded to an issue with her record label that led to the album being shelved for a while. Turning to her fans, she took to Indiegogo, a crowd-sourcing platform, she collected the necessary funds to finish the production of Evil Eye Charm and she is now ready to release it to the world.
“While the economic crisis seems, to the outside world, to be our biggest issue, the psychological crisis the Greek people are going through as a result is worse. Greek people at the moment are depressed and don’t see any future,” Katrin shared.

Evil Eye Charm
Evil Eye Charm gives a clear voice and sound to these concerns. It is a boiling stew of discontent and heartache, but a hopeful heart pulses throughout the album, particularly on the song, “If You Believe In Dreams.”
One of the highlights is the track “Leave Without Me,” with its driving beat and direct, almost confrontational lyrics. “Losing” reminds me of the best of Concrete Blonde, heartbreak wrapped in a tough, swirling production. When the song wraps, there’s no doubt that she will heal, but the question remains as to the cost.
Katrin plans on a Greek tour for the fall, and she is quite excited about an invitation to perform in New York City this winter. As with everything else, her nation’s economy is dictating much of what is available to the band. In speaking with her, her ambition and passion is clear. She wants to get her music into as many hands as possible, not so much for money, but to shine a light on what it is like for her generation and her country.
But that’s where we step in; just like her other fans did with the Indiegogo campaign. Purchase this exquisite new voice on September 10th and enjoy her dark, dramatic gem of an album, Evil Eye Charm.

""Greek Goddess of Dark Alt Rock, Katrin the Thrill returns with Evil Eye Charm.""

Once dubbed the "Greek goddess of simplistic and dark alternative/indie rock music" by Bite Me! Magazine, Katrin the Thrill is back with a new full-length album entitled "Evil Eye Charm", which will be released on September 10. The release is a follow-up to 2010's "Earth Is Calling Us", which was generally well reviewed, and gained Katrin enough loyal fans to run a successful Indiegogo campaign that contributed to the new album.

Katrin has definitely paid her dues leading up to this new offering, performing extensively in festivals such as European Music Day and Indie Free Festival as well as opening for acts like Manic Street Preachers, Greg Dulli and Electrelane. She has drawn a lot of comparisons to PJ Harvey, with her dissonant guitar playing and throaty, moody vocal delivery, and there's nothing wrong with that; after all, there's always room for another strong, talented woman in music.

""Panopoulou’s voice trails off down a haunting path, making you feel a little more seductive and mysterious.""

Katerina Panopoulou has paid her dues to the music industry. After years of playing solo gigs and mixing and matching band members, she settled in nicely with the right musicians and became Katrin the Thrill. This five piece band from Athens, Greece is set to release their brand new album Evil Eye on September 10, 2012, and promises to stay true to the alternative rock sound that they wear so well.

While Panopoulou’s music has been compared to PJ Harvey and Radiohead, her vocal stylings give off a certain vibe similar to what Joan Jett projected during her years with The Runaways; assertiveness and strength. The only difference between her and Jett would be that Panopoulou’s voice trails off down a haunting path, making you feel a little more seductive and mysterious, rather than loud and ready to mess shit up.

Although the band is tight and plays the hell out of their instruments, there is really nothing extraordinary about their sound, save for the lead vocals. However tracks like “If You Believe In Dreams” stick out for the simple fact that the use of the violin is the only experimental sound to be heard. Sure the riffs are edgy and their melodies catchy, but Katrin the Thrill just doesn’t have that extra factor that would put them ahead of, or differentiate them from any other alternative rock band we’ve seen to date.

On the other hand, Evil Eye Charm is a commendable piece of work, as the album is an actual album rather than a complication of random singles. It follows suit of their 2010 release Earth Is Calling Us, an EP prompted by the fires that broke out in Greece back in 2009 (released as Panopoulou’s first solo project, the EP was created as an homage to the environment, offering it’s proceeds to the reforestation of the areas effected by the fires). However the tunes don’t exactly break through that indie/alternative rock barrier even though the band has the potential to let loose and go crazy. They seem to be holding back. - MVRemix

""Greece are currently building their own creative army to fend off the dark years to come and one of their many soldiers is Katerina Panopoulou aka Katrin the Thrill.""

Interview - Katrin the Thrill

Greece isn’t having much luck at the moment. With an economy that’s seen better days, unemployment on a monumental scale and an understandably angry population that are still coming to terms with what’s going on. They say that when a country is on its knees its finest creative minds come to light. For all the horror that the Thatcher years in Britain dealt the population we did have the most inspiring politically motivated music, comedy’s and films.

Greece are currently building their own creative army to fend off the dark years to come and one of their many soldiers is Katerina Panopoulou aka Katrin the Thrill. Armed with a sultry voice and PJ Harvey-esque brutal riffs Katrin is here to show us what Greece has to offer the world (and that’s a lot in case you were wondering). Katrin spoke to Don’t Dance Her Down Boys about writing music, the making of her album and what’s happening in Greece.

Don’t Dance Her Down Boys: How did you first get involved with music?
Katrin The Thrill: Music was always in my life. Even as a toddler I would perform concerts for my family. I joined my first band at the age of 17 and a year later when the band broke up I started writing my own music.

DDHDBs: How did you choose the name Katrin The Thrill?
KTT: In 2007 I participated in the Coca Cola Soundwave Music Contest using Katrin the Thrill as a funny nickname, but after winning a place among the five best music acts I decided to hold on to it.

DDHDBs: Who are your musical influences?
KTT: Radiohead was a great inspiration and influence for me. I just love Tom York’s voice; so sentimental and beautiful. The Pixies is also one of my favorite bands and a great influence for me. I grew up listening to their albums and I absolutely love their energy and genius simplicity. Of course there are many others, I absolutely love music, I wouldn’t know where to start.

DDHDBs: Your album Evil Eye Charm is coming out later this year. Can you tell us a bit about the making of it?
KTT: It took 8 months of work in the studio to finish the album. For the second time I’ve worked with Sakis Bastas, who is the producer of the album. Working with Sakis is always a great pleasure because, his work is excellent and he is an amazing person. The only difficulty was traveling to Patra and back, which is a two hour trip from Athens and I had to do it quite often, but it was still worth the effort and it was a bit adventurous and fun as well.

DDHDBs: The album was originally due to come out last year but it got delayed, could you tell us what happened? Was it disappointing to delay the album?
KTT: Yes, it was really disappointing because the album was ready to be released in December 2011 but at the last minute the deal with the record company broke down and the release was cancelled. It was like a nightmare to me because the record company owned the production without releasing it for almost three months. Then they decided that I should pay for the production and move our separate ways. It was a really difficult period for me. Luckily, I had great friends that stood by me and came up with ideas to raise money. An Indiegogo campaign was one of these ideas and people were responsive to help and participate.

DDHDBs: What’s your favourite song to play live?
KTT: I don’t know. It goes with my mood. I always enjoy ‘Sorry’ though, maybe because it feels liberating.

DDHDBs: I love ‘Under the Skylight’, it has a very 90s PJ Harvey feel about it. Could you tell us a bit about that song?
KTT: I love this song too. I wrote it in 2006, if I remember correctly, when I used to live in London. I was in love and a little bit drunk when it came to me.

DDHDBs: A lot of musicians cite various experiences or feelings that drive them to create. What drives you to make music?
KTT: I write music to express my feelings and sometimes it feels like it’s the only safe way. It also seems like it is a positive way to express sadness, a - Don't Dance Her Down Boys

""Great rock music, and I am loving their latest album Evil Eye Charm which will be released in the coming months. ""

Katrin the Thrill - An alternative rock band from Greece, with the lead singer Katrin showing similarities to PJ Harvey and Alison Mosshart's style. Great rock music, and I am loving their latest album Evil Eye Charm which will be released in the coming months. They take on the likes of Harvey and Courtney love and create a beautiful mash of grunge with a dash of current electronica like the Smashing Pumpkins. Take a look at their site, it's so freaking cool!

""I feel that hearing Katrin the Thrill live would make for a life-changing experience.""

Katrin the Thrill is an act that is hard to categorize. The eclecticism of Evil Eye Charm is such that listeners will continue to find more to appreciate with each subsequent listen. The initial track on Evil Eye Charm is Losing, and it blends hints of “Creep”-era Radiohead with Sisters of Mercy. Perhaps most brilliant on this track would have to be the guitars that soar above the rest of the arrangement.
With a high amount of energy, Katrin the Thrill moves onto Leave Without Me. The slower start of this track immediately provides listeners with a different side to the artist; the instrument-heavy introduction is reminiscent of Death Cab for Cutie and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. The vitality and vigor that Katrin the Thrill instill into each track ensures that listeners will stick around much longer than they would for singles-oriented acts. Hello continues this varied approach with a set of vocals that build off of the work of Alanis Morrisette and guitars that match well this narrative. If You Believe In Dreams is a late-album track that looks to shatter the conception that bands will begin to spin down at about the half-way mark.
Evil Eye Charm is an album that continues to rock from beginning to end. While a great many of these tracks could easily make it onto rock radio rotation, I feel that hearing Katrin the Thrill live would make for a life-changing experience. With nary a weakness to be found on this disc, I would have to say that this is one of the best albums that we have had the chance to review in the first half of 2012. ""If this band ever makes it to Austin to play, I'll be the first in line to see them.""

While wading through a bunch of album submissions waiting to be reviewed, I was struck by the fact that the artist with the most balls out of the whole batch was a female: Katrin The Thrill from Athens, Greece. Dark, brooding, dissonant, yet beautifully diverse and full of sonic textures, the album "Evil Eye Charm", is set to be released on September 10, 2012. The album opens with "Losing" which starts with the haunting sound of footsteps walking away from you, instantly grabbing your attention and pulling you into the band's world.
The standout track on the album is "Leave Without Me" which I couldn't help play over and over again, out loud through my speakers and also through headphones to capture all the seductively subtle production nuances. This song is a hit waiting to happen; maybe it's already a hit in Greece and I just didn't get the memo, but I can tell this song is going to make some serious waves when the rest of the world gets their hands on it. I could write a whole review about how much I love this song but that would be a disservice to the rest of the finely honed tracks on this release.
Also noteworthy about "Evil Eye Charm" is the fact that the art of creating an album as opposed to simply a collection of singles, is not lost on Katerina Panopoulou, the primary songwriter in the band. There seems to be a natural evolution to the sound and feel of the songs as the album progresses that can't be a coincidence. Panopoulou has a tremendous knack for crafting lyrical hooks; simple yet heartfelt phrases repeated just enough times for the listener to grab hold of and sing along with but not too many times to seem repetitive and unoriginal.

If this band ever makes it to Austin to play, I'll be the first in line to see them.

It was worth the effort. The album is founded on a compelling meld of spindly austerity and cranked-up attack of a palpably liberated vigorous talent. By and large, an accomplished and beautifully craftred masterpiece. - Most Def

Katerina Panopoulou is an untypically dark indie rock/alternative singer/songwriter from Athens, Greece. Her music has been described as a cross between PJ Harvey and Radiohead.
They got that right.

There have been a lot of powerful Greek voices, Irene Papas, Melina Mercouri, Demis Roussos (If you doubt that then you were not at the Royal Albert Hall on 30 December, 1974), Maria Callas, and even Nana Mouskouri in her own calm way.

But Katrin The Thrill in many ways is a more powerful albeit darker voice. Just what is needed for this time.
I am really digging her dark powerful voice, this is a young lady to be reckoned with.
Just give a listen and see if you are also not hooked...

"Live report: Katrin The Thrill @ Eliart Theater 1/06/2012"

Ok I'll start by being honest... I was a bit bored to leave home that day, to go to see a band I didn't know. If it wasn't for Jo's poke I wouldn't! But sometimes life proves you wrong!

The moment we entered the theater I had a mood swing after seeing some old friends. A nice chat and beer helped the waiting time to pass by really fast... and before we knew it Katrin the thrill was on stage telling us that "Earth is calling".
KTT is a 3 person band from Greece with sounds and influences from the independent British scene. Their style is not unique but it's something you can easily adapt and let it grow inside you. When I first saw those three girls I couldn't help but notice 2 things: The absence of a drummer and the absence of a bass player. That seemed like a problem but both instruments were covered very delicately by a laptop. Their presence on stage is really vibrating and uplifting, giving you the urge to start dancing to their music, a point of view a lot of the people shared that night.

It was about an hour that could fill your energy stock and keep you going for hours... as I always said, who needs drugs when you've got music!

We will be in touch with KTT, so stay tuned!

""The mystic of Bjork meets the darkness of Radiohead in Katrin the Thrill.""

The mystic of Bjork meets the darkness of Radiohead in Katrin the Thrill, an emerging electric rock band with origins in Greece.Founder Katerina Panopoulou began creating music in her teenage years when she sang among friends in a band. By the time the group disbanded a year later she was hooked—she bought her first electric guitar and began writing her own songs. After two years of music study in England Katerina returned to Greece and joined forces with guitarist Gina Dimakopoulou, violinist Katerina Michailidi, bassist Iakovos Siaparinas, and drummer Dimitris Panagiotopoulos to form the band Dementia Praecox. Since then the band has changed members as well as names until finding footing in Katerin the Thrill by 2007, when the group successfully placed in the top five music acts at the Coca Cola Soundwave competition. The video for her song "If You Believe in Dreams" gained a powerful endorsement when it was included in the Music on the Coke Side of Life collection.Earth is Calling Us was released by Katrin the Thrill in December of 2010 as Katerina's first solo project and EP album with Gina on guitar, Maria Roka playing bass and Tolis Toleas the drums. The album itself, six tracks, is electric, alternative, and dark all over. The first track, "You Make Me Wanna Die," opens with rock and mournful calls. "Unreal" gets a little darker, pulling you into the whirlpool, and "God" almost unnerves you, the way it combines the twinkling of a child's music box with murky electric riffs, except that rather you find yourself banging your head along. It is darkness at its musical best. The best track is arguably the one the album is named for, "Earth is Calling Us". You hear the shadows from the very beginning, stirring, lurking in the bass, and there is something irresistible and pulling about Katerina's voice even as the protagonist of the accompanying music video slouches through a gray city. An image that stands out from the music video is one of the same young man opening his lighter against a tree—a small tribute, perhaps, to the cause of the album. Katerina began work on Earth is Calling Us in wake of the wildfires that devastated large areas of Greece in 2009, and with it aimed to take action and help mend the burned forests. A part of Kartrin's profits are vested in restoring the affected areas.Written By: Julie Israel - Darling Dork

"Interview at Song Revelation"

Katrin The Thrill is a singer songwriter from Athens and creates an appealing dark Indie Rock Sound. When we first checked out some of Katrin’s material at Song Revelation we were really impressed and were happy when she agreed to complete a full feature interview with us. Read on to find out about what Katrin has recently been working on, how she creates some of her tracks and what it’s like living in Athens.

Q: Who are you called?
Katrin the Thrill. In 2007 I participated in the Coca Cola Soundwave Music Contest using Katrin the Thrill as a funny nickname, but after winning a place among the five best music acts I decided to hold on to it.

Q: If you could use a tagline of less than 20 words to describe your music and who you are what would it be?
For me music is basically the expression of feelings and emotions, but if you want a description that would be three words: Dark Indie Rock

Q: What is your musical background?
Music was always in my life. Even as a toddler I would perform “concerts” for my family. When I look back in myself there is one characteristic that never changes, and that’s me singing… I went to study “Popular Music & Performing” in England and then I got a degree and worked as a sound engineer. The way I approach music is instinctual and sentimental. I just lose myself in it and let everything else go.

Q: How have the last 12 months been for you?
The last 12 months have been really busy and creative for me. I recorded my new album, which is now ready to be released. In the meanwhile my first EP “Earth Is Calling us” has gained excellent reviews. The EP is dedicated to the earth and the environment and part of the profits were used towards reforestation. In January our aim was accomplished and we managed to complete our first reforestation with success. This was a really inspiring experience.

Q: Who inspires you musically?
Lately I get inspired from the classics and especially classical piano compositions. I was never into classical music until recently, that I have started to study the piano and discovered the greatness of Chopin, Bach and Debussy. Of course there are many others, I absolutely love music, I wouldn’t know where to start…

Q: Is there anyone you would like to collaborate or gig with?
I always wanted to be the voice in a Massive Attack song and sing a duet with Tom Yorke.

Q: What songs are you listening to at the moment?
At the moment my iPod is full of the Pixies albums, ‘cause they definitely make my day and also the album Modern Celibacy of my really good friends Berlin Brides.

Q: What is your creative process for creating a track?
I usually play the guitar, or sometimes the piano and then I come up with a voice melody and lyrics. Writing music is an absolute need of expression; thoughts and feelings that manifest as melodies and songs.

Q: What’s more important, melody or lyrics?
I would say both.

Q: Where are you based?
I am based in Athens, Greece at the moment.

Q: What’s it like being where you’re from?
It is really difficult at the moment. Greece is a wonderful country, but the last couple of years we are having a major political, financial and social crisis. Our democracy has been abolished and our political system has been corrupted. But on the other hand the whole world is on a crisis. For me this is a chance for humanity to realize and focus on what is important. We are all connected and therefore need to understand that our personal benefit is to care for the common benefit.

Q: What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on releasing my new album.

Q: What’s been the highlight of your career to date?
I always believe that the best are yet to come.

Q: What are you hoping to achieve in over the next 12 months?
My main priority for the next 12 months is to release my new album and tour in Europe, US and Canada.

Q: What do you to relax?
I drink valerian roots and I practice on my breathing. Singing makes me relax as well, playing music and especially the piano.

Q: Where would your favourite holiday (vacation) be and why?
My favorite winter vacations would be anywhere that I could snowboard. In the summer I definitely prefer to be somewhere in the Greek islands, they are unique and they provide endless possibilities of fun and relaxation. I am also dreaming of a road trip in the US.

Q: If you could give a little piece of advice for new or aspiring musicians what would it be?
A little piece of advice, which derives from a song that I have written, is “Dreams come true if you really believe”.

Editor’s Note: Katrin The Thrill has a really unique and profound sound that is instantly recognizable. We sure that as her career progresses and she performs throughout the world more people will become fans of her music.

""This is one of those releases that I kick myself for not discovering or being told about earlier.""

There are a few female vocalists, who when I hear them sing, the sound of their voices continue to haunt me for hours. Grace Slick and Siouxsie Sioux are two of these vocalists; the one thing that they have in common is that when they sing, their vocals seem to “lift” from the songs and dominate the soundscape. In more recent years, Skin of Skunk Anansie and Marina Lambrini Dimandis of Marina and the Diamonds also have this quality to their vocals. Katerina Panopoulu, who writes and performs under the moniker Katrin The Thrill, is another female vocalist to possess this quality. Her debut EP, “Earth Is Calling Us” (20 December 2010), not only frolics in darkish, brooding music that straddles both grunge and post-punk revival, it showcases her powerful and compellingly alluring vocals. This is one of those releases that I kick myself for not discovering or being told about earlier! The genesis of the EP harkens back to 2009, when fires swept through Greece leaving havoc and devastation in their wake. “Earth Is Calling Us” is not only a reaction to the fires, but also a means to help; part of the profits will go towards the reforestation of the burned forests. In essence, this EP is more than just aesthetics; it is the chance, the potential, of doing something meaningful that transcends music. “Earth Is Calling Us” opens with “You Make Me Wanna Die” – musically straightforward and lyrically blunt: “Now you’ve hurt me enough, so please decide to stop. Yes you made me sad, how cruel is your love…” Do not dismiss this song as that ramblings of a jilted lover; take notice of how the atmosphere between verse and chorus shifts, when Panopoulu repeatedly sings, “You make me wanna die.” It becomes obvious that this song is about the effects of an abusive situation, an issue rarely addressed in music. And it is obvious from the start that there is conscious consideration of how music and lyrics will work in tandem. The following track, “Unreal,” is darker and more brooding than the first; the guitar playing/arrangements on the track, though not the most complex on the album, really create an amazing lulling atmosphere. “God” is a surreal, narrative track of death (maybe suicide) and a “trip to find God” in order to find love. The song is as dramatic as they come; from the verses that seem to inch slowly, building up suspense, to the grandiose, yet ambient, feel of the chorus, everything about the song is disarming in a good way, especially when she sings the line, “I am God. I am God.” The titular track follows, sharing some of the same underpinnings of the preceding track in terms of how suspense is built in the song. What I really like about this track is how the music and vocals bounce back-and-forth from resigned to angry. The radio edit of the song closes the EP. But before reaching that point, you go through “Sorry.” The music goes poppier than before, definitely more on the grunge side, with a bit of “shoegazy” guitars for effects. The main lyrical content is the repetition of “I’m sorry.” What really gets you about the song is how the near bubbly music and the idea of contriteness in the repeated phrase are really mutually exclusive and yet work wonderfully together (definitely my favorite track). But like good lyricists, there is an air of (total) ambiguity about this song: what are you sorry about? How did it go wrong? But, at the end of it all, it doesn’t matter, because the song really captures that moment when you want to give into your remorse and ask for forgiveness, but still stubbornly holding onto the façade of being happy and upbeat. Just as I always say about Scandinavia, Greece stands outside and relatively at a distance from the Anglo-American world; though drenched with its music, it is experienced in quite a different way than a kid in Boston or Manchester would engage it. It is that distinct perspective about music, genre, and even language that really gives some international artists something special and alluring to their music. Katrin The Thrill (though having studied prior and now living in the UK) is one of those artists that have that alluringness of being the outsider producing something familiar, but yet refreshing and distinct. “Earth Is Calling Us” is the evidence of that. It is everything about this collection (that amazing voice, the infectious rifts, knowing that your purchase helps reforest parts of Greece, and that distinct approach of familiar elements) that keeps me hitting repeat and making me wish I knew about it earlier. - Slow Dive Music

"Earth Is Calling Us Album Review"

Dark modern rock with dramatic Grace Slick-ian vocals sung in an intriguing Greek accent. Plus: the creepiest God song ever! - Roctober Magazine

Katrin is not an exception. They have edge of PJ Harvey, But with very much Greek Gothic Approach, Guitars Sonic driven Harsh and psychedelic,
Earth Is Calling Us, come up as strongest number on This EP, With a lead that could have some roots in "4 Horsemen" legend.
Her Story is emotional, but with dark punch, and driving New Wave hooks with rolling monotonic bass to keep you, flowing in the river of
Post Punk Revenge.

"Earth Is Calling Us Album Review"

Katerina Panopoulou started playing music with friends at home in Greece. Her journey since then has seen her play both in bands and as a solo artist, interspersed with a couple of periods spent in London to complete her studies.

Back in Greece, the band evolved, members came and went, the name changed (on a couple of occasions) and although now KATRIN THE THRILL is ostensibly Katerina’s ‘alter ego’ this EP was recorded with the aid of long-time associate Gina and several others.

The concept of ‘Earth Is Calling Us’ was sparked (no pun intended, though that’s probably hard to believe) by the devastating forest fires that ravaged Greece a few years ago. Indeed part of the proceeds from the sale of the EP goes towards the reforestation projects.

So what’s it like? Well, there’s no arguing with the Press Sheet that fans of PJ Harvey, and Patti Smith will enjoy this. That said, the first track ‘You Make Me Wanna Die,’ actually opens with an intro that reminds me of Australia’s Howling Bells – up until the vocals kick in when to me there is a resemblance in style to that of Skin from Skunk Anansie.

I love Howling Bells. I don’t like Skunk Anansie. Hmmm! Not too sure of this one. It’s all a bit downbeat and ‘grungey’ for me. It’s OK.

‘Unreal’ is pretty much in the same vein. The vocals are a little higher and the track, at almost four and a half minutes has some nice, atmospheric instrumental breaks. Again though it sort of ‘plods’ its way through the duration and does actually get a bit depressing!

‘God’ on the other hand is far more exciting- in a creepy, spine-chilling sort of way. The little piano arpeggios and droned keyboard effects combine with Katerina’s somewhat manic sounding vocals to create the impression of a porcelain-faced doll staring at you from the end of your bed in your darkened room, then ever so slowly rolling its eyes up into its head.

(Oh – it’s just me, then?)

‘Earth Is Calling Us’ is the longest of the five tracks (there is also a shorter ‘Radio Edit’ of this track) at just over five and a half minutes. Yet again, the vocal style is almost one of despondency and simmering anger. But it works better here, I think. The backing has more of a drone to it, and the glockenspiel is used to great effect to build the atmosphere.

‘Sorry’ is a bit weird – it basically amounts to two and a half minutes of the words ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry,’ being repeated over and over, though the pace and beat is rocked up a bit on this one.

Overall, it’s neither the best nor the worst EP I’ve heard this year. But it will definitely hold appeal for those who enjoy PJ Harvey and Patti Smith. And bleedin’ Skunk Anansie! - Loud Horizon

"''Greek goddess of simplistic and dark alternative/indie rock music""

Have you ever wondered what would happen if Thom Yorke (circa "OK Computer) and Bjork had a baby girl - what magnificent and talented creature would be born? Well, I have the antidote to put your crazy mind at ease…Katrin The Thrill. Katerina Panopoulou who is a Greek goddess of simplistic and dark alternative/indie rock music is releasing her first solo piece of art as an EP titled "Earth is Calling Us". In addition to five brilliant tracks for every purchase a portion of proceeds are donated to the reforestation of burned forests in Greece.

Although there is no sign yet of tour dates in the United States Katrin The Thrill is an act that I will most definitely be keeping a constant eye on, so I can experience the hands down, best girl indie act out right now.

All you need to become obsessed it to listen to one of the two tracks out on YouTube. First of all, on Earth is Calling Us you'll notice that this track is also the title of the EP and in the first five seconds of the video you'll recognize the first flag of relevance to Radiohead. 15 seconds in you'll get the taste of a younger, less pitchy Bjork. The lyrics and music being a little darker than these two big names is what help sustain her uniqueness to the music world.

Secondly but, sure as hell, not the least is "If You Believe In Dreams". The opening violin's trill kind of gives you a hint of The Breeders, but it's softened by a hint of Patti Smith!

What do you think? Could you see Katrin The Thrill as the next successful female based indie group? Or, should they take their womanly whining elsewhere?

"" I just had the chance to hear ‘Katrin the thrill’ and fell in love.""

It’s a rare time for me these days to instantly fall in love with a newer band. I just had the chance to hear ‘Katrin the thrill’ and fell in love. There is a certain darkness that I love about their track ‘Earth is Calling Us’ that I haven’t found in a long time. The softness, the grinding of it; just awesome. "EP Review-Katrin the Thrill"

Reminiscent of 90's female greats such as, PJ Harvey, Ani Difranco, and Alanis Morissette, Katrin the Thrill brings female power to rock. Distorted guitars build a sonic bridge to support Katrin’s Riot Grrl infused voice and blend with piano, raw drums, and discontented melodies. In her five song EP she brings to question God, talks about Ghosts, the Earth, and personal struggles. You can listen to her EP in it’s entirety on her myspace. "Earth Is Calling Us Album Review"

Today we're having a look at the debut EP from Katrin the Thrill. Occupying a space somewhere between Radiohead and Tori Amos yes somehow more malancholy, Katrin brings a set of mellow rock tunes reminicent of both her native Greece and London, where she and her band currently call home. So how does the Earth is Calling Us EP stand up? Quite well. Read on.

I found this to be quite the enjoyable listen. The laid back drum beats ooze a kind of quiet swagger that draws you in. The guitar work is as gloomy as it gets. Before the vocals come in, one imagines that they'll be greeted with some sort of Reznor-esque growl but when Katarina Panopoulou's sultry voice sneaks in, it's a pleasant surprise. They've done a fantastic job of setting up a really cool vibe but they've avoided taking it too far.

After multiple spins through the EP, I can't really find any fault. It's about as impressive as debut EPs get. I can't say enough good things about this group. I'm not sure when Earth is Calling Us will be available for purchase, but it won't be soon enough. Make sure to check out Katrin the Thrill on their home page or on their Facebook page. You won't regret it. - Groove Sandwich

"Interview at Aj&dbs"

Katrin the Thrill, Athens-Greece
- How did the project come into existence? = Initially I created music as a singer, when a teenager with friends in Athens-Greece but when the band broke up -one year later- I started writing my own music. In 2002 I formed the band Dementia Praecox. After many live performances in Greece, I moved to London and the band broke up. During my stay in London, I performed live quit a few times singing my songs with an acoustic guitar. In 2007, when I returned to Greece, I participated in the Coca Cola Soundwave competition, under the name Katrin the Thrill and won a place among the five best music acts. For the next two years I performed in major stages and festivals in Greece and I was the support act for Electrelane, Manic Street Preachers and Greg Dulli. In 2009, after the devastating fires that swept through Greece, as well as many other places around the world, I decided to take action and do something about it with my music. In 2010 the Earth is calling us EP was released and part of the profits are being used towards the reforestation of the burned forests.
- Who are the members of the band if any and please tell us about it? = Earth is calling us was released as my first solo project, with Gina Dimakopoulou playing the guitar, Maria Roka the bass and Tolis Toleas the drums.
- How would you describe your sound/genre? = Basically my music goes with my moods. Incidents in my life have an affect on the way I compose my music and write lyrics. If you had to put in a genre I guess it would have to be in the alternative/indie rock category. The sound is aggressive and at the same time sexual from what they tell me.
- What formal training or previous experience do any of the members have? = As I said before music was always in my life. Even as toddler I would perform “concerts” for my family. When I look back in myself there is one characteristic that never changes, and that’s me singing...I went to study “Popular Music and Performing” in England. Then, I studied and worked as a sound engineer. The way I approach music is instinctual & sentimental. I just lose myself in it and let everything else go.
- Are you working w/ a producer on your upcoming album? = Yes, I am working with Sakis Bastas “Sak” who is an amazing person and producer. I am so pleased that we worked together on “Earth is calling us” EP and that we are going to be on the studio again to record my upcoming album.
- Who would you say has been the biggest influence on the bands sound or that you have used as inspiration for your music? = I would say that Radiohead was a great inspiration and influence for me. I just love Tom York’s voice, it is so sentimental and beautiful, and Jonny Greenwood is a musical genius. Of course there are many others, I absolutely love Music, I wouldn't know where to start...
- What advice would you give to others starting out? = I would say that the most important thing in life, as well as in the music world, is enjoying the process of things and being happy in every career and every step on the way. ‘ Cause in the end it really doesn’t matter where you’ll get, if you struggle all your way to get there, it would be hell. Work hard but don’t forget to enjoy yourself while doing that.
- Where can people go to learn more about you and hear your music? = People can learn more about my music at www.katrinthethrill.com, www.myspace.com/katrinthethrill, http://www.facebook.com/pages/Katrin-the-Thrill/41656216876 and they can purchase my EP “Earth is calling us” on iTunes and Amazon.

- If you could play anywhere in the world or with anyone you wanted where and who would it be with? = I really want to play some gigs with Berlin Brides. They are a very uplifting electro-punk female band from Greece. We have been on stage together in the past and even though we play different styles, people really enjoyed it. This is something that we are actually planning and organizing together. I would also love to play in the States anytime soon, somewhere in LA ideally, with the National who I have been hearing a lot lately.
- What has been your greatest experience so far either individually or as a whole? = I just found out today that “Earth is calling us” has been voted as the number one album of the year in Greece. For the people to choose my work as number one album is the greatest honor.

- Do you have any upcoming events or news you would like to tell our readers about? = In two weeks I am starting the recordings of my new album, which will be out this summer and I am really looking forward to it. Also, I was notified by a film director that she is interested in making a music documentary about me and what I do, so she will be join me all the way through the album’s production.
- Where do you see yourselves or hope to be in about 5 year? In 5 years time I see myself touring around the world and sharing my music with the people.

"Earth Is Calling Us Album Review"

“Oh, this is serious!”
My first reaction upon hearing the brilliant new act Katrin the Thrill.
Moody, heavy and not at all what you’d expect, Katrin the Thrill are an impressive rock band hailing from Athens. Greece. With the current festival circuit/SXSW/indie rock crowd typically demanding nothing more than cuteness from it’s female artists, vocalist Katerina Panopouli brings a brooding, sincere lead seemingly inspired by artists like PJ Harvey, The Breeders and Melissa Auf Der Maur. We could use some realness in music, don’t you think?
“You Make Me Wanna Die” is an ethereal scorcher, and it only gets better from there. From the outlandishly dramatic “God” to the absolutely mournful “Earth Is Calling Us”, this is serious music. That’s not to say that mainstream music fans won’t find a lot to enjoy here. I’m certain they will. Its just that those of you who like depth will really sink into this album. The band’s new album “Earth Is Calling Us” was released in December 2010, and part of the proceeds go towards reforestation efforts in Greece. "Earth is Calling Us Album Review"

Art is meant to stir the soul, and such is the case with the stunningly beautiful and relevant indie/alternative rock act Katrin the Thrill. It’s easy to come to the conclusion that the music industry is plagued with the hipster virus and no one is telling the truth, but that would be a lie, my friends. It’s artists like Katrin the Thrill that remind us all that music still has power, and one that can be wielded to it’s maximum potential, which is internal realization in the human mind/soul. In the tradition of great female singers such as Patti Smith, Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Bjork, and PJ Harvey, Katrin the Thrill singer Katerina Panopoulou is intense and engaging in just about every way possible.

The fact that I hadn’t heard of Katrin the Thrill before today makes me wonder about how many great artists are currently going unnoticed. Perhaps the market is oversaturated or perhaps most music blogs and authorities have bad taste. Regardless, I’m glad her music arrived at my desk, as this is exactly the kind of rock music that could use a revival. Katrin the Thrill’s EP release is called “Earth Is Calling Us” and it’s amazing throughout. If I gave ratings it would be 10 out of 10. What makes it all the more special is how rare her particular brand of raw, honest rock is. At times atmospheric and soothing and at others demanding and arresting, “Earth Is Calling Us” should be required listening to serious music listeners.

And by the way, just in case you’re looking to be deeply moved by a music video, an art that has been somewhat lost, look no further than the gorgeous and thought-provoking video for the title track “Earth Is Calling Us” below. - Independent Music Promotions

"Wonderful album! Pure Sexual voice with rough but sophisticated songs. Her recorded work shows her not as a diva singer, or a rock goddess, but as an artist, who seize the world or retreat from it completely if it servers her ends." - IphoViator
