"Interview with Katrise"

Q. At what age did you realize you wanted to become a music artist and why?

By the time I was 14, that’s when I knew. The biggest reason why is because music is not only what I do, it’s who I am. It’s in my blood. My father is a composer/bassist, my mother was blessed with the gift of a beautiful singing voice and passionate writing abilities, my uncle is a producer/song-writer, etc. Having so much musical influence around me made me want to pursue it full force. I guess other reasons would include wanting to break the cycle of generations of struggles and for my own emotional release.

Q. Most music artists have that special someone or thing that influenced their decision to do music. Did anyone or something in your life play a major role in influencing you to go into the music business?

Many people have in different ways. For instance, my mother taught me how to sing, harmonize, and always supported and encouraged my endeavors to go for it. My sisters were big fans and my husband is also supportive of the music vision that I have. The one person who I think made me aware of the fact that I am more than just a ‘singer/songwriter’ and that I belong in this business is my uncle. He was the first one to ever call me a producer showing me that he had an in depth understanding of my true ability. That accelerated my desire to pursue music as my career.

Q. In terms of the music, which major artist(s) influenced your style and why?

First and foremost, I would have to say Earth, Wind, & Fire. I know that I cannot say every reason here, but the biggest way that they have influenced me is by their harmony. I have never encountered a band that has used harmony in their music as comprehensively as EWF. Their harmony has touched me so much that it has become a part of my musical style. You will never find a song of mine without at least two-part harmony. Additionally, artists like Stevie Wonder and Lauryn Hill have been big influences for me. In short, they both have raw talent. They can write, sing, perform, produce and all. That is the kind of artist that I want to be, the kind that can bring it all to the table.

Q. With so many independent artists trying to make it, what makes you stand out from the competition?

The fact that I do not feel under pressure to be like anyone else makes me stand out from the competition. No matter what, my music will always be real and true. My songs will always contain what is truly in my heart. That is the kind of music that truly reaches the inner recesses of the hearts of millions.

Q. Music industry professionals are quick to say that being an artist means to gracefully fit a marketable niche in the industry. If you were offered an opportunity that asked you to be something you are not, would you do it to get your foot in the door?

That’s a tough one. I think it would be unreasonable to say ‘no not under any circumstances.’ It really depends on how much I have to change to fit the marketing niche. I say that because some changes are good. If they ask me to do something and I personally feel like I needed that change anyways, I would not be against it. However, if I were asked to be a booty shaker wearing little or nothing all of the time for my image, the answer would be no way.

Q. Making music is one thing, selling it is another. What types of strategies do you use in promoting your artistic work and getting it heard by the proper professionals?

I use the Internet and word of mouth more than anything else. I also have a lot of things that are in development, such as a new website. My plan is to have all of my music sites linked to each other and my main site. I also plan to have some business cards made, which will direct all interested parties to the music sites and my main website. Last but not least, I also have it set up so that one can go to Google, type in ‘Katrise,’ and take their pick of which site they want to go to rather it be my space, Artistopia, Indieartist411.com to by my CD, or Sonic Garden.

Q. In regards to wheeling and dealing, how important do you feel business knowledge is to making it in an industry filled with much heartache?

Business knowledge is vital no doubt about it. It can mean the difference between a music hobbyist and a successful professional artist. The more you know the better. As in all aspects of life, knowledge is power.

Q. Let's fast forward to 5 years from now. What advice would you offer to struggling independent artists?

There’s a poem called, “Don’t Quit” written by an anonymous person that has inspired me to keep on going for years now. I would highly recommend it to any artist who feels like they want to give up-please don’t. Read this poem and you’ll find your new inspiration. For years, I have had to work dead end jobs consisting of activities that I had no real interest in just to pay the bills until the music took off. My dream was to make music my primary career. I am still at it. Please - By Artistopia

"Katrise"

Katrise is a R&B songwriter, producer, and artist. This is real R&B, not just over sappy, over long ballads. The beat is great, but that is not all her songs offer. They offer depth, and innovation on the genre. If you are an artist that is seeking talent to work with, this should be a person to contact. This Orlando based talent always finds new way to challenge herself, from reggae to rock. She has work with many different artist. The fact that she is bot a songwriter and a producer is sometimes hard to find. She has a new album out entitled, "Embrace My Music Vision." Detail can be found at her website below.

Songs I like are "Slide with Me," and "Just This Once." They can be found at her website: http://www.katrise.net/. You also connect with her at her myspace, www.myspace.com/anonymousattraction - The Independent Music Scene by Paul Ruth

"Keep it Light Competing in Broadjam's 6-pack Contest"

"Keep it Light," a song co-written by Kendra Legare-Jackson and Katrise (that's me) is currently competing in Broadjam's 6-pack contest (Broadjam.com) in the "What Does it Say?" category. The idea of this category was to take the instrumental music that Broadjam contest judges chose and write lyrics to the track that you as the writer felt appropriate. In that sense, you're exemplifying what that tune is saying.

One beat that stood out to both Kendra and I was produced by a guy named Rob B and part of the Broadjam instrumental track line-up. What this beat inspired was a song geared towards single moms. Basically, the track focuses on one single mom in particular who has children and a job with long hours with very little time to herself. One night, she goes out with her girls (which is long over due) and she endures lame come ons by a particular guy. In an effort to turn this guy off, she starts telling him about all of her responsibilities hoping he won't be interested anymore.

This song has already pulled in quite a bit of attention from other competitors and listeners in the contest after only a few weeks of competing. Single mothers pour in expressing that the song filled their hearts because it hits what their lives are like on the head. Others feel that the lyrics and melody go so well with the music making it easy to relate to.

Some may wonder how two people who aren't single mothers at all could write such a true to life song about those who are. The answer to that is simple: growing up with a single mother myself, I saw first hand how difficult it was for her. She worked extremely hard as mother and father often complaining about lame come ons when that was the last thing on her mind while going out. What a great perspective to see as a child! I would definitely say that her experiences, along with this track we used, just made the words and melody come to life.

The Broadjam 6-pack contest judges will count the final votes in mid-November. Some of the top contestants can win up to $70,000 worth of great prizes including exposure and gear. Currently "Keep it Light" in conjunction with many of Kendra's (klegare-jackson.com) songs (some with my background vocals) competing in other categories are locked in at 7th! We hope to stay up there and even go high as possible!

"Keep it Light" is now available here on Artistopia under the album "Collaborations." Show us some support by taking a listen and discovering what it means to you!

"Katrise Has Updated her Website and Profiles!"

Great news! Due to exciting changes from the Artistopia administrators in addition to discovering new marketing tools for indie artists, I have updated both my website and profile!

What's new on my website? Instead of having different samples of the music that I create for KER Entertainment scattered between the "Home," "Services," and "About Us" pages, all of my songs are conveniently located in one place using the 'Reverb Nation' jukebox player! Now navigation is easier than ever. After typing in the url, www.kerentertainment.com, nothing further is required to hear my music. All songs are located on the index page, the player will launch itself, and automatically play my songs. This change has made the website dramatically easier to load. For those of you who may have had problems loading my site before, please revisit the page now and you'll see a huge difference in load time. They're basically is no load time. I made this change because I wanted everyone to have equal access to my web page.

What's new on my Artistopia profile? Due to the new HTML space that we now have available on our profiles, I have uploaded the same KER Entertainment promo that is now available on the "About Us" page on my website and myspace on the Artistopia overview section of my profile! Please check it out, it's under two minutes.

As a final note, I have new songs available that can currently only be accessed by visiting KEREntertainment.com such as the new party/dance song, "Half Step/Whole Step," and "Good Girl" co-written with Shawn Lopes. These are exculusive to my website, so please check it out.

Once again, I would like to thank everyone for their continued support!

"New Song, I Forgive You"

A song that truly encompasses the woes of human relationships, while embracing the resiliance that all humans contain is how I would describe my new song, "I Forgive You." It's also a follow up to "Forgive Me," which is a song that I'm sure people who have beat themselves up over the falling apart of relationships, when they were not completely at fault, could relate to. It's truly a song that will have each and every listener looking inside reflecting on what's there. Feel free to stop by my profile and take a listen to it. It's under the album, "Skyward Ascension" and it's number 6. Drop me a line and let me know what you thought.

"American Idol Songwriter Contest"

I recently submitted "Your Pain in My Heart" (#2 on the Artistopia gospel charts) to the American Idol Songwriter contest. My hope is that this song will make it into the top twenty so that all of my supporters will be able to vote for it.

What Idol is looking for is a song that is emotionally charging, one that the American Idol audience can relate to, and one that captures the journey of the contestants. I felt like "Your Pain in My Heart," is that song. What better song can appeal to the emotions of others than the definition of empathy? Furthermore, I thought about how emotional each contestant gets when one has to go home. I could almost picture them singing the song to each other as they stand on the stage as it is a huge disappointment to get voted off.

If nothing else, I feel great about the possibilities that lie ahead. I mean this is American Idol we're talking about here! That's huge! Even if I don't win, I am elated because I know I have a shot. What a privilege and motivating way to share my vision--the music vision!! - Artistopia

The Official KER Entertainment Website is Live!

Published on 3/18/2007

By Katrise

The official KER Entertainment website is now live on the Internet at www.kerentertainment.com. It was just launched this evening by Katrise, the main producer/song-writer operating the business. This long-time Artistopia artist is the founder and originator of this song-writing company. Her determination is for KER Entertainment to be the key ingredient in helping others to embrace not only her music vision, but their own as well.

The concept for the site was developed over many months. Katrise consulted with web designers, business owners, and even other friends at the time. All were supposed to help her to get a functional website to operate, but eventually she found herself going it alone. She did not mind endeavoring to do this site on her own because this gave her control over the entire project as well as a strong sense of accomplishment.

Katrise would like for all who are able to take a few minutes to view this first release of her website. She will be updating the site on a regular basis for improvements and news so be sure to check back regularly.

Some of the information that you will find on this website is an index page outlining interesting facts and news about KER Entertainment. The About Us page explains briefly about the history and experience that Katrise has gained. The weblinks page contains links to other pages where Katrise's music can be found. The contact us page makes a way for you to get in touch with Katrise directly and also place an order for your musical needs! If you're still reading this article, hurry up and book this budding producer/song-writer and don't forget to always embrace the music vision.

Bio

Double AA is an R&B producer, songwriter, and artist. With several years of recording, songwriting, and production experience, she has collaborated with a wide array of writers and artists. She grew up listening to musical greats such as Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind, & Fire, Natalie Cole, Lauryn Hill, Tony Toni Tone, Mary J. Blige, The Temptations and more R&B greats. Nevertheless, her primary influence has not stopped her from challenging herself with other genres from reggae to rock. She calls herself an, “all around producer/songwriter.”

Katrise most recently recorded her first commercial album effort, “Embrace My Music Vision,” a twelve track R&B album with songs that are all thoroughly tied to the deepest inner recesses of her love for music. The album was released on March 15, 2010 on CD Baby, iTunes, Amazon, and Napster among other distribution. New singles like “Energy” and “Slide With Me” are currently airing on various Internet and FM format stations. One of the songs from her album, “Groove Again (Slide Part 2),” recently received Honorable Mention from the Song of the Year 2009 songwriting contest.

Katrise has also collaborated with Chicago land’s Songs 2 Share President, Roberta Annicks on songs such as “uBoy,” “Fly in the Kitchen,” and “Just This Once” all available for license through Songs2Share.com. Both “uBoy” and “Fly in the Kitchen,” contain lyrics written by Annicks, while Katrise did the musical arrangements, performance, and production on the tracks. “Just This Once,” lyrics by both Annicks and Schroeter, was also arranged, produced, and performed by Katrise.

Other notable projects include co-writing with Boston based writer Shawn Lopes on tracks such as “Half Step/Whole Step,” “Good Girls,” and “When I See You,” all indie chart toppers on Artistopia in the R & B category. Furthermore, Katrise composed, arranged, and produced the entire musical soundtrack for popular Purdue University news magazine show, “The Fast Track” in West Lafayette, IN. The show had quite a following on the local level with some 35,000+ viewers. The show aired on Purdue University’s cable network and Lafayette, IN’s WLFI channel 18. Katrise can further be heard singing background vocals on tracks from, “Life, Love, Lessons & Jazz,” an independently released album by an artist local to Orlando Kendra Legare.

With various musical accomplishments under her belt, it is clear that Katrise’s new album, “Embrace My Music Vision,” is not just a title, but also a request and a course of action soon to be taken by the world at large.
