St. Augustine musician Kaylee Rose at 17 is becoming an old pro on the performance circuit in St. Augustine.

For the past three years, she has been performing rock music at area venues. She has gigs scheduled in Scarlett O’Hara’s, Sangria’s, and Spy, all in the historic area of the Ancient City.

“My first open mic was at age 14 in Ann O’Malley’s,” Kaylee Rose said. At that time, she had been taking her music seriously for only one year.

“When I was 11 my dad bought me my first guitar and I started taking lessons. It wasn’t until I was 13 that I started really getting into it.”

In addition to local concerts, Kaylee Rose also has performed in bars and venues in Nashville, Miami, Gainesville and Jacksonville. She said she will start playing in Orlando soon.

In July, she performed the National anthem for a Fort Lauderdale Strikers game, a professional soccer team.

“I played my guitar while singing the national anthem for a crowd of 5,000 people,” she said. “They had never had anyone play a guitar while singing the anthem. They asked me to come back an do an opening show and possibly sing again during their playoffs.”

Kaylee Rose plays more than 80 cover songs, and performs 15 songs she has written herself. She recorded a self-titled five-track CD of some of her original songs with The Fish Tank Recording Studio, owned by Lucio Rubino here in St. Augustine.

“I wrote the music and lyrics and Lu Rubino helped with producing. His help was amazing,” she said.

Kaylee Rose also has a music video, filmed by students at Full Sail University in Winter Park.

“The students decided to use me as their music video project. I was very honored,” she said. Before choosing her, the students heard her songs on her website, www.kayleerosemusic.com.

Kaylee’s full name is Kaylee Rosenberg, but she shortened her last name to create a stage name. Her parents are Mike Rosenberg, a teacher at Pedro Menendez High School; and Jeannie Smith-Rosenberg, who works in marketing with Cobalt Communications.

“My parents come with me everywhere,” she said.

“They both help me a lot … It helps to have their support. Mom does my bookings for me. I’m pretty lucky that my mom is good with marketing.”

Kaylee Rose will be a senior this year at St. Augustine High School, a school that houses the St. Johns County Center of the Arts. Traditionally, Kaylee takes music classes as well as the usual high school courses, but this year she’s focused on earning her diploma.

“I’m in the Cambridge program and will be taking all academics in order to get my AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education) diploma. I just had a conflict with the schedule and won’t be able to take music classes,” she said.

Meeting all the requirements for the AICE program means that Kaylee Rose will earn a Florida Bright Futures Scholarship for college.

After high school, she plans to go to college either in Florida or Tennessee.

“I will keep progressing with my music on the side but I will always have a back-up plan,” she said.

“I don’t have a specific major, but it will definitely be something music related.”

She knows that she has to play to her audience.

“St. Augustine audiences like (music from) The Beatles and Lady Gaga,” she said. “I mix it up as much as I can.”

Still working on that hot first release.

Kaylee has been playing guitar, singing and writing music since the age of 14. She landed her first paying gig at 14 and has steadily risen up the ranks on the Florida gig circuit. Audiences are amazed at the magnitude of songs she can play, over 150 covers to date. From Pink and Miranda Lambert, to Maroon 5 and Bruno Mars, Kaylee can play from any genre.

Her original music is also popular. During her summer gig schedule she managed to sell over 1200 cd's in 6 weeks, not including downloads. She continues to gain followers of all ages from all over the country.

Recently she's been playing with her new band Lockett. Their high energy shows which include pulsating light shows and giant panda bears are definite crowd pleasers. Her band mates are experienced musicians who have recorded and toured for many years.

Who knows what the future brings, but Kaylee is hoping it involves more songs, more shows and more success in the music business.
