Canadian Hip Hop veteran K-Blitz announces his new project “Paroxysm” EP is due out later this year. He has just released his new single “Blinded” featuring Mac Millon.

K-Blitz is a hip-hop artist and performer who’s known as a prolific songwriter with diverse musical leanings. In Spring of 2021 K-Blitz is releasing his “Paroxysm” EP, with three of the songs already being played on radio stations in Canada, the US and Europe. Citing his primary influence in life as his mother, K-Blitz credits her for introducing him to a diverse range of artists and always encouraging him to follow his muse, music.

K-Blitz first rose to the attention of the Edmonton Hip Hop scene in 2010, winning the Hot 107FM Hot Factor contest. More recently, he was nominated for the 2018/2019 Edmonton Music Awards. In 2015 Blitz was handpicked by Kxng Crooked (Crooked I) of Slaughterhouse & Shady Records to be part of the Circle of Bosses a.k.a. C.O.B. Canadian division, and later in 2015 he was awarded Canadian Urban Television’s Prairie Rap Record of the Year for C.O.B.
Gladiator Music Vol. I. K-Blitz Relentless work ethic speaks for itself, having released fifty-two songs in fifty-two weeks, dropping a new single every Saturday through 2015 for his #NewSoundSaturday series.

No stranger to radio play, K-Blitz has landed the songs Red Eye, Danger, and Blinded spots on WLJS-FM 91.9 FM in Jacksonville, Alabama, AMP FM 87.8 Germany, CJAM 99.1 FM in Windsor/Detroit, CFCR 90.5 FM in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, CA and the Muse Boat Radio network in Europe. Each station has selected one of the songs for rotation. K-Blitz’ song “Red Eye” has also been added to 9 Spotify playlists, with over 75,000 listeners.

HipHopCanada: Hey K-Blitz! Thanks so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to have an interview with us here at HHC! So how are you doing?

K-Blitz: How am I doing? I’m good man, you know, I’m working, that’s how I’m doing. I got my solo album Top Floor coming out, just in the middle of mixing and mastering. This is what I consider my second solo release album, I’ve had several but this one’s got commercial success. I consider it my sophomore record. We’ve got the Grim Empire project happening. Sonik and myself have our duo album coming out. Lots of radio joints, mixtapes dropping left, right and centre. Within the next 4 months I should have about 4 projects out, over 100 tracks for my fans to enjoy.
HipHopCanada:Since this is your first HipHopCanada interview, tell us a bit about yourself.

K-Blitz: Well I’m 25. I’ve moved all over the country [but] was in Ontario most of my life. Made my big first splash in London, now I’m out West and repping Canada to the fullest. People who don’t know me will know me very soon. I want to do this for the rest of my life, grew up with soul and funk, trying to take this game and do it new. I want to show the world we have a lot of talent to offer in Canada and bring some other artists with me while I’m at it.

HipHopCanada: You have some shows coming up. March 27th at the Encore Club in Sherwood Park and April 3rd at Avenue Theatre in Edmonton. What are your expectations?

K-Blitz: Yep, Yep, March 27th is a benefit show for the Youth Emergency Shelter Society. When I was a kid I was in Peterborough, and didn’t live at home. I stayed at the shelter for a minimal amount of time. I love to give back to my community so anything I can do to help, I’m down. We got the radio stations involved, and we’re getting our community involved. As far as expectations we want everyone to help the kids and enjoy the show. Any show you see where I’m performing bring your ass on out.

HipHopCanada: How does it feel when you hear your singles playing on the radio?

K-Blitz: It’s been happening for a couple years now but it never gets old. I get mixed feelings. It’s a step in a positive direction, you [can] feel the pride that people are listening, but at the same extent you feel that your music is good enough for the radio but you wonder why you’re not signed yet? All I can say is it’s just a step in the right direction. You start to realize that you’ve just got to keep pushing forward. Don’t slack just because you’re getting a bit of fame. There’s always room for improvement but I’ve got to say it’s quite the rush.

HipHopCanada: You seem to have a bit of beef with another cat named K-Blitz, what’s going on with that? How did that all start?

K-Blitz: Dude’s a clown… that’s as far as I’m going to take that. Beef is beef in general I don’t have time for people that hate. When people hate at least I know I’m doing something right because they have my name in their mouth.

HipHopCanada: Your first self titled album had a lot of emotion in it. Was it a rough time in your life?

K-Blitz: Yeah, you could say that. Every album is an emotional time in your life, whether it’s good, bad, happy, or sad. I was trying to figure out who I was. My album In The Building… I was a bit pissed off so that came through and now my album Top Floor I’m smiling and laughing. Real artists try to show how they feel through their music, when you hear a K-Blitz record I try to make it so you feel like I’m having a conversation with you and you alone to let you know how I feel. That’s just my perspective on it.

HipHopCanada: From about 5 years ago to now some things have definitely changed for you. How is this affecting your music? Negatively? Positively?

K-Blitz: I don’t hold a grudge, I’ve grown. If Snoop Dogg was still talking about 187 on an undercover cop I wouldn’t be listening to him now. I didn’t buy the new Eminem album because he’s 40 and that’s not what he’s talking about. If I was still bitching and moaning about the same stuff from 2 years ago I would be a loser. I mean I’m always going to be cocky but I’ve grown with my music and my attitude. If someone bought my record 3 years ago and one tune helped them out I would hope this recent album would do the same.

HipHopCanada: If you had the chance to ask your favourite artist one question, who would it be and what would you ask? Why?

K-Blitz: Oh man… I have a lot of favourites and questions. I’d have to say if Michael were still alive I would love to sit down with him and ask him how to create a phenomenal song. That dude could write EVERYTHING, music, lyrics - Hip Hop Canada.com - Shanna Marie Robinson

K-BLITZ, performs his new single ahead of Hip Hop for Hunger - Breakfast Television Edmonton Aired December 15, 2010

n their song City is Dying, local rap artists Brothers Grim paint a bleak picture of poverty and desperation along 118th Avenue, calling it the "avenue of crime, pain and pawnshops."

In contrast to those stark lyrics, Stephen "Komrade" Goyette of Brothers Grim exudes hope when he talks about the area.

"I've been a 118 (Avenue) resident all my life," Goyette said Saturday. "Arts, culture -- it's alive on 118th Avenue, and people will come out to see it."

Goyette is the driving force behind the second annual Hip Hop on the Avenue show, an event designed to showcase local talent, promote music and culture along the avenue. This year, organizers will also collect much-needed donations for the Edmonton Food Bank.

Without a mandatory donation, people won't be admitted to the all-ages hip-hop show which runs from noon until 7 p.m. today in the Avenue Theatre, at 9030 118 Ave.

"It's the only admission cost," said Goyette. "If somebody shows up without a can of food, we will just send them across the street to the 7-Eleven to buy a can of soup."

The more food people bring, the more tickets they will get to win prizes given away during the show, including a DVD player and spa packages, he said.

The show's lineup includes more than 20 hip-hop performers, including K-Blitz and Habe, as well as a standup comedian and a special hour-long performance from Edmonton junior high and high school students.

The artists are performing for free, and the Avenue Theatre has pitched in by charging a lower fee for the hall rental and helping publicize the event, said the theatre's general manager, Jonathan Jacques.

"We're a locally owned and operated business, so we believe in helping out the community," Jacques said.

Goyette hopes to fill the Avenue Theatre to its capacity with 350 people. "Our numbers on Facebook right now are 400 confirmed and 1,000 maybes, so even if a portion of those people show up, we would be in great shape," said Goyette, who celebrates his 21st birthday today.

"It's a degree of social responsibility. If I can get 200 people together, why not do something good at the same time?"

Marjorie Bencz, executive director with the Edmonton Food Bank, said it's great to see young people with lots of energy pitching in to feed the hungry.

The Edmonton Food Bank is now about 85 per cent of the way to achieving its goal to collect 240,000 kilograms of non-perishable food items and $900,000, Bencz said.

Edmonton's hip-hop community has traditionally been a strong supporter of the charity, said the food bank's resource development coordinator.

"It's been more than a decade that the hip-hop community has been supporting the food bank," Tamisan Bencz-Knight said. "It just shows that hunger affects all of us and everybody is supporting us in their own unique way."

She said the food bank is "extremely optimistic" it will reach its collection goals for the season.

K-Blitz

K-Blitz is a veteran of the Edmonton hip hop scene, having been part of it for over 20 years. Starting his career at only 13 he has put on countless shows at a wide variety of venues around the city helping to grow the scene and the fan base. His latest EP will be dropping in a couple of months and taps into his emotion and some of the most vulnerable points of his life allowing us to see a part of him he hasn’t displayed before.

Today K-Blitz isn’t just focused on his career, but is also looking to help grow the Edmonton scene and provide guidance that wasn’t available to him for the artists that he has inspired. “I never had the opportunities back then when I started out so I wanted to give younger artists the opportunity that I never had.”

When asked about Edmonton’s sound both artists compared us to a melting pot. As the city grows the sound and styles within our city develop creating a unique sound for Edmonton. They both also explained that because of the internet we have a new artist coming up everyday producing content.

“Don’t judge your success by someone else. Be yourself one hundred per-cent of the time whoever that may be,” said K-Blitz as advice to upcoming artists.

While King Kontoh said “Work! Work! Work! Don’t ever stop working. Write a song and then another one. If that one sucks write another one. Keep working believe in yourself and make all the right moves.”

With these two talented artists leading the way both in their music and guidance it is no wonder that the Edmonton hip hop scene has grown, and will continue to grow at such a rapid rate. - Nait Nuggett
