If The Circus Ever Came To Town Again

Written By: David Cramer

IF THE CIRCUS EVER CAME TO TOWN AGAIN
David Cramer -- © May 2005

If the circus ever came to town again
on a magnolia night in May
I'd break out my old slingshot, shoot wishes at your window,
and help you get away
just like the night that circus came to town
50 years ago today
and you loved me when the circus came to town

All the roustabouts and the ne'er-do-wells
would build us a golden fleet of bumper cars
sing us an anniversary chorus of The Last Train to Glory
and shower you with candy bars
then you'd kiss me so hard that when we came up for air
we'd blow out all the stars
and our love would light the night when the circus came to town

Then we'd slip inside the fun house doors
and we'd laugh until we'd fall
just to see our bodies sawn in half
in that magic mirrored hall
and we'd think that we were really young again
until the ticket takers called
but you'd still love me when the circus came to town

All the roustabouts and the ne'er-do-wells
would build us a golden fleet of bumper cars
sing us an anniversary chorus of The Last Train to Glory
and shower you with candy bars
then I'd kiss you so hard that when we came up for air
we'd blow out all the stars
and our love would light the night when the circus came to town

Then we'd make believe that I'd never gone
and that there were tears you never cried all night
and we'd close our eyes and swear
our hopes would always keep our secrets bright
and go to sleep inside a blue balloon, a blue balloon, blue balloon
as it floated out of sight
over a carousel
if the circus ever came to town
If the circus ever came to town

Sailing To Charleston

SAILING TO CHARLESTON
David Cramer -- © August 2003

Battened down the hatches / we were both on a roll
I ran aground in Natchez / gave a gypsy my soul
I would have taken more sail in / but she swallowed me whole
now can you meet me in Charleston / if I get away

She was a gale force queen / hit me up for spare change
my buccaneer senses / went a little bit strange
when I saw what she was after / but I couldn't arrange
to have you meet me in Charleston / til I could get away / in a southern rain

A seagull loved a hurricane / and took it for a ride
I lost my last anchor / on a rising tide
if I could make it to land / will you still be by my side
and would you meet me in Charleston
if I get away / in a southern rain
if I get away / in a summer rain

But walking in sunshine / barefoot in the bay
stepping off the rocks / no matter come what may
her hands do something to me / I forget what to say
still if you meet me in Charleston / I could get away / in a southern rain
if you'd meet me in Charleston / I could get away / in a summer rain

Sailing to Charleston
on a summer's day
meet me in Charleston
if I get away
north on a downwind run
seaspray to reach the sun
clotheslines of clouds hung up to dry
out on a Gulf Stream wind

Between the crest and the trough / there is a drop and a rise
between the shadows and the light / here where the night bird flies
waves like black silk stockings / when the twilight dies
I could never be richer / or half as wise
if I could see you in the moonlight / with the stars in your eyes
now won't you meet me in Charleston / if I get away
we could get away
if we could get away / through the summer rain

Lonesomeoneliness - Requiem For America

LONESOMEONELINESS
Requiem for America
David Cramer © December 2006

The sleeker the serpent / the sharper the tooth
the deeper the damage / the darker the truth
the anger the master / the hunger the slave
the winner the gambler / the worse that you crave

How much more / can anyone take
when the less that's real / the more you fake
When the less you feel / the more you break
if lonelier you than me / then only more hearts ache
If only we more or less could live
outside our more or less selves
for lonesomeonely else's sake

The whiter the fire / the hotter the flame
the faster the fortune / the briefer the fame
the harder the ardor / the higher the hope
the farther the faller / the tighter the rope

How much more / can anyone take
when the less that's real / the more you fake
When the less you feel / the more you break
if lonelier you than me / then only more hearts ache
If only we more or less could live
outside our more or less selves
for lonesomeonely else's sake

More eager than singing / and cheaper than art
the sleeper the dreamer / the keeper the heart
more willing than angels / to bust into suns
more sudden than wonder
and...
thunder than,
blunder than,
thriller than killer than
guns

How much more / can anyone take
when the less that's real / the more you fake
When the less you feel / the more you break
if lonelier you than me / then only more hearts ache
If only we more or less could live
outside our more or less selves
for lonesomeonely else's sake

It should be so easy to see what more's at stake
but for the lonesomeoneliness we make
