"KC Da Rookee - Moroni 7 Records - Chosen - King - Let Em Know"

Moroni 7 Records recently released “Chosen” The new album by one of the freshest UK Hip Hop artists, KC Da Rookee
We got in touch to find out more about this talented artist.

Firstly thank you for speaking to us at newurbanera.com
Can you tell us some more about yourself and how you started out in the music industry?

I grew up in Nottingham, and then when I was older, I joined the army.
I was posted in Berlin, and in my spare time, I would go have a look at their local music scene, Then I got involved in shows, and eventually got noticed. I got a deal with Showdown records and released my first album – Rookeestizza.
Is there anything you would change if you could go back and what lessons have you learnt?
When I write songs, I write them mainly for myself. They need to be my own.
I learned to respect other opinions, although the final decision is always down to me.
Tell us about your new Album “Chosen” and what message you want to get across to the masses?
When I wrote Chosen, I wanted it to be positive, honest and inspiring
I wanted to have a classic old school sound, also it was very important to me to show my Jamaican roots.

Your obviously passionate about positive change within community’s and do great work .Would you tell us more about the work you do and the outcomes?

I’ve done a lot of work with the Youth of today. I travel to schools, to give a talk on positivity and how that can reflect on music, and I give a small performance.
It’s important.
Are you currently working on fresh material and do you have any collaborations in the pipeline ?
I’m working on a few collaborations at the moment, but focusing on finishing University, before I start touring in the summer, and writing the new album.

You have also released three singles which we have had the pleasure to review in this article . How have they gone down with the general public?

The feedback has been helpful and positive.
Not many People know me in England yet, so I’m a newcomer, but the main thing is that all the new fans can hear my latest music!
What I have to say, on my new album “Chosen”
I feel very blessed that I can do this
Give Thanks. Jah Rastafari.

"KC Da Rookee"

Black Sheep mag catches up with Nottingham MC KC Da Rookee to talk about life, love, music, and anything else that crops up in between.

For those who don’t know – who are you, what do you do, and what’s your music like?

My name is KC Da Rookee. I’m an artist that specialises in hip hop and likes to talk sense in my music.

Have there been many changes on the scene since you left?

Yeah they have trap music now. A lot of people dumb down their raps now, they don’t say as much stuff in there. There is a big influence from the south now in music. Even in Africa, hip hop seems to be doing really well. It seems to have taken on a new form in the UK, it’s known as UK rap rather than just hip hop. A lot of rappers, rap on dance beats now, that’s not really hip hop there just trying to get on the radio.

Who would you say were your biggest influences on the new album?

Bob Marley. Just my life in general and I’ll say the youth, because I’ve spent a lot of time around the youth in Nottingham.

How would you compare the German scene to the English scene?

The German scene is a lot more honest. The emcees are more honest. It kind of stays true to the culture a bit more. The scene is more supported over there; there are more venues to do shows at, more promoters and less violence at the shows. Radio seems to support the scene a bit more over there. It’s not all geared towards one city like London. It’s just a nicer vibe. There aren’t as many people trying to rip you off.

What’s your favourite city, country or venue to play and why?

Berlin, summertime it’s a very creative city. I love its history as well.

You have worked with so many brilliant names. Who was your favourite and why?

My friend that died inspired me, Big Sal. We were in a group together called KMC, we all got signed to universal together. He was the kind of person that didn't like to play by the rules, he knew he was talented but he didn't like to conform. He just liked to keep it strictly hip hop, he was very outspoken.

What is your music representing? Is it your personal opinions and agenda or more of a sign of the times?

Just everyday life. Honesty, a lot of truth in there, I try to be inspiring, I try and make music that’s timeless, the music you can listen to in 10 years and it’ll still be good.
My agenda is probably anti big corporations.

What advice would you give to someone young trying to start out and make it in the business?

Practice practice practice. Listen to your own heart.

How important is it for musicians to be an example in their music as well as in their lives?

I don’t think they have to be an example in their music, actors aren’t examples in their personal lives at the end of the day, and music’s the same its just entertainment.
However I do try and be a role model for my sons.
And anyone that maybe looks up to me for some reason.

Do you think your music has an impact on today’s generation of musicians?

I don’t think it does at the moment, but I strive that one day it will because a lot of the music that’s out there today, I compare to crap that’s made at MacDonald’s. Then my music compared to a nice Sunday meal that you get that will make you feel good after.

What do you like most about being a musician?

Performing in front of loads of people, that’s the best drug in the world. - Black Sheep Mag, Shaun Shearer

"MEEET: KC Da Rookee Gives Us a Track by Track Breakdown of His New Album"

The state of UK hip-hop just got stronger. Nottingham rapper KC Da Rookee has been out of the hip-hop game for a while, but has a new album out, Chosen, which should see him burst onto the scene here in a much bigger way, with his new album filled with funky beats, and smart rhymes. After being posted in Germany whilst serving in the British Army, he started making hip-hop records over there, and quickly built up a German following.

Moving back to England, back to his home town, and starting a family put hip-hop on the back burner for a while, but now he’s back with a determination to succeed, a feeling that his best work is in the present and future, and a more mature attitude to writing songs and rhymes that shines through on this new release.

KC Da Rookee gave us a little exclusive track by track on all the songs that feature on Chosen, giving us some insights into the meanings and thoughts behind them.

Pressure – On this track just talking about life situations how I feel at times and how it feels to be a parent and as a youngster growing up and the pressures you might feel. I’m also rapping as if I was talking to a young teenager trying to give him a little advice.

Dangerous – Basically wanted to describe the feeling at the moment in me, in my friendship circles, In my city, and around a lot of places in England that I go to from a black, male, inner city, perspective. And explaining that actually when I get on a track and express myself I am Dangerous.

Let em Know – Linked up with the producer a long-time friend of mine DJ Desue . So we hooked up and when I heard the beat I wanted a catchy chorus and I was thinking I had to let people know what I was about so I based all the lyrics around that.

Help – Wanted to talk about social situations in the world and how we respond to them.

King – I’m talking about who is really in charge of everything!

Cosmic Rain – Just talking about how I think a lot of people are living from day to day. The chorus just explains how I feel sometimes.

Destiny – Explaining about all of us making the best we can out of our life and how we control it.

4eva – Talking about a relationship I used to be in and how I felt at the time. Describing how I felt and what I was going through.

Lies – Talking about how the governments a moving and how we are being constantly being watched and how it feels. Also trying to predict what I think is going happen next.

Different Eyes – Because I am a little older now and a parent I see the world a little different so I just wanted to talk about that. Wanted to give a little advice to young people to make them better people.

Welcome Home – Because I’ve been out the game for a minute just wanted it to be like me coming back into a home like a prodigal son, the home being of course the Hip Hop scene.

The Good Life – Talking about how we take life for granted sometimes and that everyone wants the same thing which is a good life.

Knocking – Another relationship track talking about how it is when someone leaves you and how you feel.

Pray - just wanted to let people know how I deal with my problems and talk about a lot of problems we are facing in the world. On the first verse I talk about opposites and ask questions. - Backseat Mafia, Jim Fletcher

"Nottingham Rapper KC Da Rookee Holds Work-shop to Inspire Teenagers"

Rap artist KC Da Rookee held a motivational rap work-shop at Djanogly City Academy, aimed to inspire pupils to fulfil their potential.

Instead of an afternoon assembly, the year elevens were treated to some positive words of encouragement and a live performance from the Nottingham born rapper.

KC Da Rookee, who was brought up in Top Valley, told the students that listening to positive lyrics will help inspire them to ‘chase their goals and follow their talent’.

He said: “Talking to young people is the most important thing that I do in my career and it’s great to come here and potentially inspire.

“I think it’s like watering a plant. That person can then grow and then they can go on and inspire others, it’s a snowball effect.”

KC and his record label, Moroni Seven Records, are focused on delivering positive music that inspires teenagers to nurture their talents.

Beverley Malpass, 29, who is the head of year 11, organised the event and she thinks these talks can only make a positive impact on her pupils.

She said: “I have a lot of students in my year group that are very much into music and rapping and I believe having a nice positive influence here will be good for them.”

“Rookee did grow up in Nottingham and came from a broken home so it’s not unrealistic for the pupils to think they can do the same thing and do something great.”

Haseen Kamal, 15, a pupil at the school, is an aspiring rapper and she was particularly inspired by the workshop.

She is applying for a place at Confetti, a specialist music college, for when she finishes school.

She said: “Our school doesn’t normally do this and people usually put me down because of my rapping but this session has inspired me, I just wanted to grab the microphone and rap.

“I come from a tough background but I can’t see why I can’t achieve what KC Da Rookee has.

“I love rapping about real things that affect us, and not about cars, girls and whatever. I write about the important things that are happening out there which people need to think about.

“I’m going to work hard to get as far as I can and I’m not backing down. I write lyrics every day.”

KC De Rookee was pleasantly surprised to see her enthusiasm, especially after she performed a rap shortly after the session had finished.

“That was priceless. Words can’t explain what that means. I could go to sleep right now as my day's done.

"That girl coming up to me and performing a rap is what it’s all about. Positivity is contagious, I know that,” added Rookee. - Nottingham Post, James White

"KC Da Rookee :: Nexcalibur :: Showdown"

RapReviews.com - the dotcom implies that we're reviewing US rap records here. When the growing internet was divided into several top-level domains, the .com was created for commercial internet institutions. As we all know, there's many a personal homepage under the dotcom domain without any commercial background to it. For the reason that the internet went mainstream in the USA first and all other countries adopted their own local domains, the dotcom has largely remained an American domain. Of course it's up to the respective countries and regions to have their own websites where they review their own rap albums - and they do - but often when I visit these sites, at least 50% of the albums reviewed are American. Depending on your point of view that's a lot or not that much. I'm not calling for RapReviews.com to become the UN for rap reviews. But if you're interested in the international aspect of hip-hop it might not hurt to hear what some rappers of the English tongue living outside of the US have to say.

Thus enters Nottingham native KC Da Rookee. Until recently UK MC's have had a hard time getting heard in their own country. That would explain why a young British rapper would do like the Beatles once did and hop over to Hamburg, Germany, to get his career in gear. He's been signed to the Showdown label for a few years now and "Nexcalibur" is his second offering after his 1999 debut "Rookeestizza". But there's always more to hip-hop than just the business side of things. Rappers need to feel at home. Home to a degree where Houston's DJ Premier and Boston's Guru can meet up in New York and become thorough Brooklyn borough representatives. KC Da Rookee hasn't gone +that+ far yet as me mainly represents himself. But having originally hooked up in Berlin with dancehall artist Mystic Dan during his army days, he's made Germany's old and new capital his home, becoming part of the Kinzmen Clikk conglomerate. Tying loose ends and knitting a tight network has always been in hip-hop's agenda. That's why you'll find KC not only rapping over beats by Croatian producers Koolade and Baby Dooks, but also rapping with Sean Price from Heltah Skeltah, female underground representative Apani, and three of Germany's finest MC's, Afrob, Samy Deluxe and D-Flame. But KC doesn't relinquish his album to guest rappers. Unfortunately the long time he spends on the mic is also the downside of this project. With a monotone flow, one single rhyme style and unimaginative lyrics my patience is sorely tired. The only bright spot in his vocal performance is his Carribean/British accent. Consequently, pretty much the first half of this album is easily forgettable. Some of the beats are plain wack ("Bless"), others have way too much DJ Premier in them ("Stop Da Press"), others are wasted by uninspired performances ("Hot Souls"). As far as the lyrical content goes, I'm appalled by the frequent use of the n-word (how about some originality, ESPECIALLY in that department?) and annoyed by weak analogies. KC seems to be capable of nothing more than basic bragging. If he comes up with concepts, he miserably fails to execute them ("Nexcalibur", "Chain Lettaz", "Hot Souls"). Given the album's title and artwork, the average French rapper would have made much more out of this. But that's how it is right now. On a whole rappers in English-speaking countries seem not to be ready to explore rap's possibilities beyond the average self-centered emceeing. And even in that department there's not much happening here.

But then surprisingly things begin to pick up. Koolade's short but sweet "You Asleep" serves as a great introduction to "Wake Up", where DJ Desue lets a flock of birds chirp throughout the track. Very nice idea. And finally KC gets his lyrical act together. From here on he is on the right track. In "Four Fists" he delivers the knockout blow after his German brethrens prepared the ground. "Watch Dis" finds producer Baby Dooks programming a track that can hang with the best of today. "Somethin' Different" is just that. It's been done before, but Koolade adds his own twist to the guitar/percussion-driven hip-hop cut format. The male singer doesn't hurt either. And if the track is right, KC can go the length.

Continuing the theme, KC takes it a step further with - "Further", by directly addressing the listener. And then follows it up with another step in the right direction, "Betta Dayz", where for the first time he talks about his personal background. "Emcee" has him explaining his choice of career, disclosing the real reason with the ode to hip-hop, "Can't Fight The Feelin'". No matter how far you're away from the original birthplace of hip-hop, you can't fight this feeling, Apani B is about to find out as she embarks on some "Rhyme Excursions" with Da Rook, before "Hold Ya Head" bids farewell.

That's how "Nexcalibur" presented itself to me: a bad first half, a much better second. So, what's the deal with this KC Da Rookee? Is he just good enough for Germany and not good enough for England? Well, one thing's for sure: he won't be conquering the American continent anytime soon. Because that is not his aim. He has already found a new home, and he might present his 'nexcalibur' in his old home, so if anything, this album serves as a testimony to the vitality of hip-hop as a culture in Europe where a man can feel at home wherever he sports his baseball hat. If you're interested, you can order the album at HeavySoul.com. - Rap Reviews, Matthias Jost

"KC Da Rookee – Welcome Home"

KC: Nee nee, kein Problem.

- Back Stage 7

"‘Da’ What is Hip Hop? – KC Da Rookee"

Going international again! The Uk’s KC Da Rookee has quite an interesting store,

"KC Da Rookee was born in Derby in the East Midlands and moved with his Mother and Sister aged 2 to Nottingham. KC’s Mother introduced him to Hip Hop by purchasing him his first single – Doug E Fresh featuring Slick Rick “The Show”. Since then KC has been living and breathing the Hip Hop life.

KC joined the British Army aged 15 and after 1 year of basic training was posted to Germany. On weekends KC would leave the Army camp and visit the local Hip Hop clubs, immersing himself in the local culture and scene. After 5 years, he decided to leave the Army, learn fluent German and pursue a career in music."

“Hip hop to me is more than just Music!! The culture of hip hop has influenced me and moulded me into the person I am today. My introduction to hip hop came through the first 12 inch record that was purchased for me by my mother. It was a record called “THE SHOW” by Dougie Fresh And Slick Rick and The B side was a track called LADI DADI. From the first moment that I heard the track I knew I had found something special. The way that Dougie fresh used his mouth to perform the human beat box with no actual drums amazed me. Then I got into breakdancing the first big influence was watching a film called Break dance 1 and 2 the music the dancing everything about it was just fresh to me at the time and it was as if this new culture was the language of the youth.

After these influences I remember going to a local breakdance battle and seeing these moves up close and being blown away by the crowd reaction, the music and just the general vibe of the jam. I then began to search for hiphop. A friend of mine had access to YO MTV Raps so I would walk to his house once a week and stay up late often falling asleep watching the latest hiphop songs to come out of the US.
Over the next few years I would purchase records CDs, and also tune in to a DJ by the name of Tim Westwood’s show on BBC Radio 1 which would also play the newest tracks from the US. Around this time I began to favour the New York sound of Boot camp Clikk , Das Efx ,Wu Tang , ill all scratch, and smooth the hustler. I also listened to a couple of UK acts such as Blak twang and a local artist called MR 45 from Nottingham. All of these guys inspired me but I would also frequent Reggae sound systems in Nottingham and London which in some way seemed related to Hip-hop to me.

I would watch the emcee’s on the mic at these sound clashes do their thing live and take command of the crowd which I liked and thought was cool, I also loved the competition element of the clash and how you could diss someone hard on the mic but be cool with them after.
I began to write raps on any pieces of paper I could find but never had the confidence to show anyone. Fast forward 5 years I found myself in Germany as a solider bored at the weekends. I decided to check out the local club scene which was saturated in the Hip Hop Culture even more than England. I began to make friends in the local city and started to go to hip-hop jams . I remember being in a jam and seeing 3 DJs use 6 decks at the same time and being once again blown away. I then noticed a guy ask who would be getting involved in the open mic and saw a queues of about 7 guys. I decided it was the best time to try out all theses rhymes I had I my head written on various guard duty shifts where I had been bored in the Army.

As soon as it was my turn I felt so empowered everyone was looking and listening and the feeling was like I had control over the whole jam for that small moment. Anyway the verse came to the end and a lot of people came up to me asking me my name and how long I had been spitting. Straight away I went back to my room and began writing another verses to come back with the following week!!!

This was the beginning of my long hip-hop journey which has been filled with Love, Hate Blood , sweat, and tears But have no doubt that HIP HOP has saved my life and I love her and always will no matter what KC………” – KC Da Rookee - Da-What, Benja

"KC Da Rookee"

Fünf + 1 Fragen beantwortet uns heute KC Da Rookee.

3. Was ist deine bemerkenswerteste Backstage-Story?

4. Beste Punchline EVER?

"I bleed the blood of the struggle walking over troubled puddles hustles in my chest, no hustle no progress." Common feat. John Legend, "I Believe"

- Backspin

"KC Da Rookee, Chosen, Moroni 7 Records"

»Let ‘em know, that I’m here, that I’m serious«, (t)rotzt der Nottinghamer Bariton auf einem epischen Synthie-Stampfer seines alten Partner-In-Crime DJ Desue allen jenen entgegen, die seinen Einfluss auf den englischen Rap in Europa bezweifeln.

"KC Da Rookee Bringt Comeback-Album "Chosen""

- Deutschrap Blog

"KC Da Rookee & DJ Shusta – Classic Mix Tape"

- Its Rap

Bio

KC Da Rookee is a UK Hip Hop Artist whose debut Album Rookee Stizza was released on Showdown Records in Germany in 1999.

This was followed up by the Album Nexcalibur in 2002 with the single Four Fists reaching no.15 in the National German charts.

KC Da Rookee: Childhood and Early Work

KC Da Rookee was born in Derby in the East Midlands and moved with his Mother and Sister aged 2 to Nottingham.

After 5 years, he decided to leave the Army, learn fluent German and pursue a career in music.

KC Da Rookee: Breakthrough

Within a year KC had managed to establish himself into the German Hip Hop Scene with the help of close friend and mentor Rene Goldenbeld. Rene helped KC release his first single independently “First Draft”, and then signed KC to his newly formed label, Showdown Records.  KC went on to release the 2 aforementioned albums, Rookee Stizza 1999, and Nexcalibur 2002. The single Four Fists from Nexcalibur was nominated for an Echo award in Germany for Best Single.

KC moved to Berlin and joined Hip Hop Crew, KMC. Whilst working on his 2 solo Albums with one of KMC’s producers, DJ Desue, KC also released music with KMC “KINZMANCLIKK” and the group was then signed to Universal Records and released the first album “Kinzman Come” 2002.

KC has collaborated with an array of Hip Hop artists in Germany and the USA and has also toured with many international known artists such as Outkast, Eminem, Noreaga, The Fugees, Sean Price and Gangstarr.

In 2005 KC decided to return to the UK with his Son to take a well-deserved break from the music scene. However he continued to write and began work as a youth worker in a deprived area of Nottingham.
In 2012 KC decided that the time was now right to launch back into the music scene.

He is now ready to cement his legacy on the culture which he felt was misunderstood in the UK, by writing an Album which is fresh, inspiring and positive. The New Album “Chosen” features production from top German producers, DJ Desue, C.L.A.S, and Berlin producer and BMI 2011 winner Paul Nza, Hamburg newcomer Rob Easy, French producer Azaia, and Nottingham producer DJ Fever, giving the album and all round European Hip Hop sound, something which has never been accomplished before.

KC Da Rookee has been signed to newly formed UK independent label Moroni 7 Records who focus on delivering positive, conscious and uplifting music to a worldwide audience.
