"Soul-jazz veteran showcases his band"

Concert Review

Keyboardist and vocalist Les McCann, a veteran star of hand-clapping, foot-stompin' good-time music known as soul-jazz, made his first local appearance in a number of years on Sunday night at the Dakota.
A self-taught player who received most of his education in smoky nightclubs, McCann achieved a rare level of popularity for a jazzman with his huge-selling 1969 concert album "Swiss Movement" and the hit single "Compared To What?"
But when the players soloed, the obvious standout was Dallas-based saxophonist Keith Anderson, who has been with McCann for 12 years, but still looks young enough to be pllaying in a college band.
Anderson, a big-toned tenor player who also does some doubling on keyboard, delivered some roof-raising solos, starting out with the familiar instrumental hit "Listen Here," recorded by McCann and the late saxophonist Eddie Harris.
McCann and his group threw in some more generic instrumental funk before closing the early set with his signature tunes. - Dan Emerson at Twincities.com Pioneer Press

"Review and Photos Vault 350 Show"

As George Clinton once shouted on Parliament's "Mothership Connection" "If you hear any noise it's just me and the boys!" All around virtuoso Marcus Miller and his band played a Sunday night set at Vault 350 in Long Beach so astounding, it could restore faith in the most jaded concert-goer. Moving masterfully from an original opening funk jazz piece inspired by "Bruce Lee" to a bluesy take on Beethoven's "moonlight Sonata" to a romp through Stevie Wonder's "Boogie on Reggai Woman" bassist Miller thumbed his nose at the concept of musical categories. Instead, he showed how true inspiration can launch a great band anywhere within the vast universe of groove. There was truly no weak link in Miller's Band.
Aside from Miller, the night belonged to his horn section. Trumpeter Michael"Patches" Stewart, didn't miss a lick, whether turning in a beautiful Flugelhorn solon "Boomerang," or an evocative muted trumpet solo on "Panther".
Even his prowess, though, was outdone by sax man KEITH ANDERSON, stepping into some very big shoes for Marcus' previous player Roger Byam. Where Byam was laidback, tasty and played just what a song needed, KEITH brought a burnished and unbridled old school soul to every tenor solo he pulled out of the bag. From the hard stuff to the tasty stuff, he executed every note as if it were going down for hall of fame posterity. Brother KEITH is going to be giving reigning jazz-soul tenor man Kirk Whalum some sleepless nights.
Don't miss an opportunity to see the Marcus Miller band.

"Mini Concert Review: Keith Anderson and Bobby Sparks@ Brooklyn"

Saxophonist Keith Anderson and organist Bobby Sparks hit the Brooklyn Jazz Cafe stage Thursday night and tore the roof off the joint. Joined by former Miles Davis sideman Bernard Wright on the keyboard and drummer Jason Thomas, the band started the concert by showing off thier jazz chops on pieces such as the John Coltrane composition "Mr. PC".
After working the crowd into a frenzy, the group got ultra-funky when they laid into a brand new tune that will appear on Keith's upcoming album. Feeling the energy that these four musicians created during this tune reminded me of their performances as part of Roy Hargrove's RH Factor. Throughout the show Keith was absolutely screaming on the horn and Bobby had the crowd standing up and dancing during his high-energy solos. By the time they finished their first set, it was clear that when Keith Anderson and Bobby Sparks get together, they don't just put on a concert-they throw a party.
