"Lets Get This On CD review 10/2006"

Let's Get This On by Kelli Said

If I had one thing to do over on this CD review, it would be to not have let it sit in the pile for so long. Months passed that I could have been listening to it.

It took a few songs to warm up to Kelli Said. At first I was reminded on Blondie and the female fronted bands of that era. But as the music played on, it became clear it was decidedly original despite the eighties influence.

The songs are fast-paced hard rock that remains meaningful and melodic. And if somehow the first eight tracks don't hook you, the 9th will. "Seems Strange," a remix of one of their earlier songs, will carry you out of this world with a strong techno-dance beat and provocative lyrics.

Bottom line: "Let's Get This On" is hot stuff. Buy it! For more info, visit www.kellisaid.com.

"Westword 'Hit Pick'"

"Despite what VH1 would have you believe, there's not much to love about the 80's. Take the clothes, for example: Leg warmers, parachute pants-talk about a fashion disaster. And the music, well, it was just as ill-conceived. The vapid, clinical, synth inflected pop sounds of new wave ushered in the Revlon revolution know as glam metal-not exactly what you'd call coming in like a lion and leaving like a lamb. But don't tell the members of KELLI*SAID that the 80's sucked. Kelli Wolf and company are all about the big eight-zero. Let's just say that if Deborah Harry and Geoff Tate had had a sordid tryst that they've somehow managed to keep under wraps for the past twenty odd years, Wolf would be their love child. On the outfits sophomore effort, 'This Is A Demonstration', paper-thin guitar tones flirt with submerged crystalline synth lines until they are subliminated under the weight of the mechanized-drum-like beats. KELLI*SAID's music may sound like it hasn't seen daylight since 1985, but in this case, that's not a bad thing, because it also sounds like the group has been writing and rehearsing this material for the past twenty years. Call it revisionism-hell, call it whatever you want-but here's one thing from the 80's that won't make you grit your teeth.-Dave Herrera - Westword Nov. 27-Dec 3, 2003

"Higher Listening Interview"

Their address said Parker and I knew I was in trouble – an hour later a vivid blood orange full moon is rising and I am screaming down some unlit accursed back road at 60 miles an hour with a bunch of pissed off locals riding my tail. @#$% Suburbs – so I finally find the infamous Kelli*Said hideout and I’m greeted at the door by the lovely Kelli. What the hell kind of band is this you are thinking? Think 80’s pop done right!
Kelli*Said is a Denver based modern rock band who appeared on the scene in January of 2001. They snagged a quick following and let loose a full length cd "Ear Candy". After performing in the Colorado scene for a year, their fans were screaming for more. Their response was the second cd "This is a Demonstration". Critics have called Kelli*Said “a unique sound unlike other Denver bands: with beat driven rythyms, intricate melodies and structures, soaring guitars, and the beautiful, powerful voice and lyrics of Kelli Wolf”. If you want the word from the horses mouth, many fans have said that this band reminds them of Depeche Mode hanging out with the Foo Fighters and Garbage. If you want to find out for yourself check out Kelli*Said on February 14 @ Hogbutlers.

Now it’s time to meet the members of Kelli*Said here's the skinny..
Keith’s musical desires were apparent at a young age when his parents would question why he wanted to spend allowances on albums and not toys. His musical roots stem from the mid 70's rock -n- roll with names like Aerosmith, Styx, Foreigner, and Pink Floyd. Keith began to educate himself on musical theory, composing and playing his first instrument, a Roland synthesizer. He started a band of his own “The Hands Of God”. “H.O.G.” jumped full force into the Colorado club scene, playing at Zenobias, Tequila Sunrise, Deadbeat Club, 23 Parrish, and the Marquee Club in Boulder. Performing for five years, "H.O.G." developed a loyal following with the fans. The band went separate ways, but Keith continued to compose music, fine tune his writing skills, and picked up the guitar.

As far back as Kelli Wolf can remember, she loved all forms of music and can’t remember when music wasn’t an important part of her life. Kelli’s early musical influences began with the Beatles, Heart and Blondie. Kelli met Keith Schneider in college and became a huge supporter of Keith’s band “The Hands of God”. She is now very excited to be working with Keith as a part of “Kelli*Said”.

At the age of 13 Dazz began to play the drums. He participated in symphonic band, marching band, jazz band, dixieland band, and played with as many records as he could. After graduating from high school, Bill chose to attend Colorado Mountain College in Glenwood Springs to study photography. During that time, he supported himself by working in a fine dining establishment and playing drums for several groups. Recently, Bill joined Kelli*Said to play in a style that is parallel to his own.

Higherlistening: Who are you and why are you here?

Keith: We are Kelli*Said, we love making music and playing shows.
Kelli: My goals are to learn a few chords, write a few songs and keep setting and achieving goals
Keith: I think that all of us passed something in life that we wished we could have done. I don’t want to be on my deathbed someday and wish I had done something.

Higherlistening: What is your next step?

Keith: Commercialism I think. For some reason I think it is going to be a movie or something that is a breakthrough.
Kelli: For me, I don’t think that is something we are trying – it may happen

Higherlistening: What is your vehicle to getting to the next step?

Keith: Our vehicle is our songs. We don’t write 7 minute songs. We write songs for New Order fans and Depeche Mode fans with overtones of happiness

Higherlistening: How are you going to market yourself?

Keith: Back in the 80’s and 90’s you followed a certain protocol of things to do to market yourself to make yourself such and such a band if you wanted to be that. And now I just think that it is so much of a crap shoot because there are so many bands out there that to follow the basic marketing schemes – everyone is getting their opportunity. You have to learn your instruments, you have to learn who you are, and you have to write that one song. I think it is us finding that one song and putting it into as many hands as possible as well as finding those people in the scene to help.
Realistically, innovation used to get you some notice – now everything is either retro, rehash or straight out regurgitaion. There is very little innovation any longer so it’s more about somebody that is in a place that can appreciate what you are doing, hearing it and that they have the vehicle – whether it is a commercial, a sound track or whatever. It’s all about getting people to buy into what you are doing. I wouldn’t say that Kelli*Said is absolutely 100% innovative – like nothing else before but it is unique and it certainly has a market. "Kaffiene Buzz-Nov 17th 2003"

Denver’s Kelli*Said started out in 2001 with Kelli Wolf and Keith Schneider, the band’s guitarist and programmer as the duo songwriting team. Influenced by some of the darker new wave of the ‘80s ala Souixie and Banshees and The Cure, but with less wave and more melodic rock structures, the band is now getting out of the practice space and onto the stages with their new 'This Is A Demonstration release'.

Kelli’s vocals instantly remind me of Dark Orchid’s Tonya Nolan with that smoky, sultry, goth-like cape, especially with a backdrop of darkness on “Land Me Here”. Where the band seems to pull in all their elements – from Keith’s programming to Rel’s bass works, is on “Seems Strange”, which shows the highest level of energy from all four players, including Bill Dassler on drums.

The CD release party for “This Is A Demonstration” takes place this Friday, November 28 at the Soiled Dove – and for Denver music fans who are regular patrons of the Dove, this is perfect place for Kelli*Said style of music to its entrance. I can expect them to receive a warm welcome from the Dove crowd, guaranteed.

So how did they begin?

Kelli & Keith formed KELLI*SAID in Winter of 2001. They both shared such a history and love for music that the only obvious outlet was to start creating songs together. They began writing tunes full of feelings and emotions brought on by past memories, current situations and hopes for the future. K*S thanks all the past and present local and national musicians that influenced us. Without the pioneers, they wouldn't be here!

How did we go public?

The excitement & encouragement from our families and friends inspired us to take this passion for song-writing & self record our first CD 'Ear Candy'. There were two reasons for this recording: The first, to see what response we would get from the public. The second, to find and form a band that blended like personalities, talents and goals. 'Ear Candy' also gave other musicians an idea of who we were and what stylistic direction we were headed in. Once we became a foursome, we self recorded a second CD, appropriately titled "This is a Demonstration". We felt the need to give local club owners and fans an idea of what we sounded like live. The word was out and the public began to take notice.

Where have we played?

With the additions of Dazz, Ryan and G, we've had the pleasure and opportunity to play with a lot of great bands in many great venues around the Denver/Front range area. Well known establishments such as The Soiled Dove, Herman's Hideaway, the historical Gothic Theatre, and most recently performing at an outdoor event with DaDa. We continue to expand and look forward to touring and performing at a venue near you.

What are your musicial influences?

We all grew up listening to late 70's, early 80's stuff. Styx, Journey, the Cars, Blondie. The mid 80's really ushered in the new wave influence. Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, New Order, The Cure, U2. The 90's brought us Garbage, No Doubt, Sarah Mclachlan, Incubus. Now the new Millenium with bands like Muse, Keane, Eve6, Blink 182 and Coldplay. You get the jist. Fun, Emotional and gritty.

What lies ahead?

We released our third CD, 'Let's Get This On' in October 2005 . We recorded this awesome CD at nationally known Colorado Sound Studios. This CD will not only shows how far we have come from four dreamers heading down to the basement to be a part of the great world of music, but also relays the knowledge that only can be gained through writing, performance and experience. 'Let's Get This On' not only captures the excitement of what our future holds, it exudes our undying love, passion and musicial belief for our band, KELLI*SAID. to you the listener: Get ready for the musical nirvana for your ears and eyes! You will be hooked!
