""Melodic and lyrically satisfying...""

New Age Country that’s pleasant
and ideal for late night listening

Kelli Swader is a native
of Phoenix, Arizona. She is
currently living in Britain,
studying music at the Centre of
Contemporary Music in London.
By all accounts, she has formed
her own band in Britain and
whenever her studies allow her
sufficient time to herself, she
performs in and around the
London area. ON THE VERGE, her
debut album, was produced
by Randy Emata and recorded
at various studios in California.
Kelli has a pleasingly soulful
voice with clear, precise diction
and among various attempts
to categorise her style, it has
been described as ‘New-Age
Country’, whatever that may
mean! One will not hear steel
guitar, mandolin, Dobro,
banjo or similar instruments
often utilised in varying
measures when one thinks of
country, although the fiddle
is brought in on the closing
track, Somehow. What one will hear is piano and cello along with acoustic guitar, bass and subdued percussion, none
of which should be taken as
a criticism, but rather as an
indication as to what one might
expect to hear as Kelli’s chosen
backing and it must be said
that, for the style of music she
delivers, this is ideal.
All thirteen songs have been
composed by Kelli, with help
from Lorna Emata Goodwin
on a number of them. For the
most part they are very well
constructed lyrically with a
good variation of rhythms,
making for a pleasant listening
experience. The opening track,
Baby, I’m Gone, is the leaving
song of a long-suffering
woman who has come to the
end of her tether. The following
track, Caribbean Blue, a slice
of romanticism, has the sort
of infectious Key West rhythm
often associated with the music
of someone like Jimmy Buffett.
It’s all change on the slow,
sultry, Down The Rabbit Hole which, like the quite beautiful,
soothing In The Quietest Place,
Tell Me and the closing track,
Somehow, invite the listener
to slip off their shoes, turn the
lights down low and unwind;
adult Pop, if you like, where
soulful piano and haunting
cello play a big part. Songs like
Fall In Love and I Can are very
much MOR while Live My Life gives us a taste of Kelli’s funkier
side with its repetitive chorus
and can best be described as
Pop. On This Day is another soulful number, this time sung
as a duet with Simon Russell,
a very sentimental offering
which is likely to become
something of a favourite with
newlyweds. The closest one
comes to down-home country
is on the catchy Remind Me (Of
You),but with a playing time
of just under two minutes it is
a trifle short although it does
demonstrate that if Ms Swader
had a mind to, she could handle
a more countrified style quite
convincingly.

In brief, a very pleasant album
delivered by a lady with an
equally pleasant voice. Melodic
and lyrically satisfying, much
of what you will hear is ideal
for late night listening and if
this is what is termed ‘New Age
Country’, then I suppose there
is room for it under the ever
increasing umbrella labelled
‘country’. LK - Maverick Magazine
