I cannot think of a better way to spend a cold January afternoon (which happened to be a much needed day off) in the Berkshires than listening to a local artist that warmed my soul and blew me away with incredible vocals and music. Kelly Hagan reached the fruition of many years work in late fall of 2003 with an ambitious project titled "Tell The Truth and Run"…. She is a local talent that found me in cyberspace. We both realized we were right in each other’s backyard after realizing there was 45 minutes between our towns. The Internet is huge but it always comes back to the fact that it is indeed a small world, even in cyberspace.

I have to tell you this album caught me by complete surprise, not that it was this good, but how I was so enamored from start to finish with it. I listened three times within the space of 4 hours! Hagan is an excellent vocalist/lyricist/guitar player that will have you hypnotized in matter of seconds as the opening track “Demented” begins. There is so much more that happens after that, it is just awe-inspiring. When I first heard “Go for a Ride” it set my soul afire, wow! This girl sings and plays with a heartfelt passion, not to mention sexy, that is indeed rare and special. Every note and vocalization is literally drenched in emotion, and lord above…do you ever feel it! Moreover, this music defies categorization. There are pieces of this and that, which make up a special recipe that delivers a serious knock out punch that goes straight to your heart. With rock, pop, blues, folk, all with an alternative upbeat slant, Hagan will steal you away for over 40 minutes with absolutely no reprieve. The final kicker is the excellent closing track “Are you Ready?” This track is the highlight of the entire album, simply put; it is an amazing display of six-string virtuoso. This woman has a lot of talent and she uses every bit of it on this CD.

I know it’s early in the year but it would not surprise me if this album makes my top ten for the entire year. I have gushed quite a bit about this release, but trust me; it really is that good so make sure you check it out for yourself and tell me if I am wrong?

Bio

Singer/songwriter Kelly Hagan got her musical start early in life, learning to play piano at age nine. Her first stringed instrument was the viola, which she played as a teen in juried competition.
After graduating from high school, Hagan studied classical piano at Shenandoah University in Virginia, and also began playing guitar in coffee houses and at functions in the area.

Soon after, she moved to the Berkshires, a stone's throw from her hometown of Canaan, N.Y. and quickly became a mainstay in the area's lively club scene. She is a regular performer at Club Helsinki in Great Barrington and has performed at the Dreamaway Lodge in Becket, Ale Mary's Pub in Millerton, N.Y. and the C-Note Pub in New York City.

Her debut CD, "Tell the Truth and Run" was released under her own label in November of 2003. Produced by Todd Mack at Off The Beat -n-Track Studios in Southfield, Mass.,(The Hunger Mountain Boys) Hagan employed a virtual all-star crew of local club talent to fill out her unique funk-rock-blues style.

The result was a critical success, earning enthusiastic raves from indie websites Cdbaby.com and Musicdish.com, as well as a firm "thumbs" up from The Berkshire Eagle, the principal barometer for success in the Berkshire area. The CD was also named one of the top 10 local CDs of 2003 by radio station WKZE-FM in Salisbury, Conn.

Over the past few years Kelly has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with talents such as Meg Hutchinson , Bobby Sweet, Adam Michael Rothberg, Amy Fairchild, Joe Bonnamassa, The Kennedy's, Mary Lou Lords and Chuck Prophet.

Kelly is currently writing songs for her second CD, due out next year.

November 23, 2003 marked the release of Kelly Hagan's debut album, "Tell the Truth and Run..."

This indie album produced by Todd Mack at Off the Beat-n-Track Studio in Southfield, MA is the result of Kelly's determination and dedication to her music.

Her personal and reflective lyrics are joined with a blend of rock, funk and blues creating an original style. Beginning with the garage sound of 'Thin Ice, followed with the bass driven funk of 'Go for a Ride' to the tear jerking ballad, 'Slam the Door', it leads your mind through a visual journey softened by the unique strength of her voice.
