Kel York is a singer/songwriter set to release her debut album early 2010.
2009 has seen Kel York and band road test her songs at gigs throughout Melbourne to enable the best songs to rise to the top.
It's difficult to pigeon hole her style. Kel is not exactly your hardcore rock chick, yet she's not your cute soft-singing indie girl either. She can be a bit of both and none at all.
Kel York is all about songs with rising momentums, melodies with powerful peaks and troughs, and unhidden lyrics with substance.
Kel York on her lyrics:
“My number one goal is to connect to people through my lyrics. Sometimes indie acts are more concerned about image and being cool, which is a shame because that’s more the scene of pop acts. Being independent is a chance to really drive home powerful songs that don’t hide behind anything.”
Kel York on influences:
“There are many influences, but I think I’ve got my own sound. My goal above all is to be original and write beautiful soaring melodies to momentous musical arrangements.”
A key example of Kel's style is Caught In The Middle (see attached CD), mastered at Edensound Mastering (Melbourne) and ready for radio. Kel is currently recording the final tracks for her debut album.

“This song is about being caught between following what you really want to be and what others want you to be. It’s about my own struggle, but also the struggle others go through. For example, it’s also a love story, inspired by a Muslim friend of mine torn between her true love and family pressure to marry into the same faith. In this way, it’s got a Romeo & Juliet feel throughout – as if the pressures of the old world are still alive and well today. And I think that’s true, because adolescents always have people telling them what to do, and what they should be (whether parents, friends, teachers or themselves). So it’s about being caught between all these pressures, yet yearning to be free.”
Music Update
Kel York is currently recording a quirky love song called “Eat You" - OUT SOON. It’s rock and roll and a whole lot of fun.
Spring/Summer gigs will be posted soon with many of Kel's new songs to road test.
