"John and Yoko (If We Were) by Kenji Urada"

In 1981, Kawasaki maintenance engineer Kenji Urada became one of the first persons reported to ever be killed by a robot. Brooklyn rockers Kenji Urada don’t want you to forget that fact. Their music serves as an antidote to the 80's infused synth driven music of today, instead turning their focus to the 90's. Remember the 90's? The carefree mid-tempo rock strut that dominated the airwaves for most of the decade (Gin Blossoms, Matthew Sweet, Sheryl Crow, etc.) was delightful to me as I was growing up. Listening to Kenji Urada’s recently released self-titled LP, it brings me back to those times, watching Empire Records and feeling like everything was awesome (as a matter of fact, I would love to see them play ‘Sugar High’ on a rooftop sometime). Take a listen to their standout track ‘John and Yoko (If We Were)’ below. There’s also a link to their bandcamp page. Enjoy! - function:music

Bio

The band Kenji Urada is the result of over 14 years of writing, recording, traveling and, oh, lot's of mistakes, too.

Principle songwriter and guitarist, John Fossum, grew up in Chippewa Falls, WI—a child of the '90s. As a teen he saved up enough summer wages for a cheap electric guitar and quickly began recording short low-fi songs.

After moving around the Midwest and Texas, John decided that Brooklyn, NY was the place to try his hand at music. As luck would have it, the talented bassist Nick Barry and majestic vocalist Erin Willis fell from the sky into his lap. Drummer Jordan Alexander filled out the lineup and the band was complete.

Kenji Urada LP, the band's first full-length album, was self released and debuted live on June 1st, 2012 at King Killer Studios in Gowanus, Brooklyn. The album was inspired by three years of gigging, living, loving, bicycle wrecks and broken bones—enough was enough—it was time to record an album.

Kenji Urada is currently gigging in New York (Glasslands, Nov 2nd) and will be on a brief Midwest tour this winter culminating in an 'End of the World Party' at the Tomahawk Room in Chippewa Falls, WI, December 21st, 2012.
