Bio

Kenya Taylor is a dynamic vocalist taking the Detroit area by storm with her sophisticated voice and boundless talent. Born in the city that produced legendary greats like Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson, Kenya brings her own blend of Detroit Soul and Southern Charm to the scene.  She effectively moves between jazz, soul, and R&B, delivering a powerful and relaxing sound that is unique and unequaled.

Often compared to a Billie Holiday, Lavern Baker, or more recently to Dinah Washington and Queen Latifah, Kenya can often be found singing with her band on stage throughout the Nashville area.  She can cover songs from every era… and this is where Kenya’s talent shines.   She makes each song her own, singing the tune with such flair as to make the audience feel that they’ve heard the song for the first time.  Kenya’s voice, when singing jazz, is sultry and relaxing.  When singing R&B, she is powerful and electrifying.  Kenya takes great pride in mastering every note, every lyric, and every nuance to the song she performs.  This professionalism and attention to detail is what separates Kenya from the pack and is helping her to become a premiere vocalist.

Growing up singing in church and in school (in a time when summer and winter concerts in the gymnasium were still the premier community events to attend) Kenya’s talent was apparent at an early age.  She fondly recalls memories of singing in her parents’ living room along to Disney’s Jungle Book Soundtrack!  With that as her first influence, she quickly expanded to influences that included Luther Vandross, Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Johnny
Mathis, Frank Sinatra, and Regina Belle.  While attending and graduating from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Kenya was part of the Musical Theater Guild, and sang in MIT’s performance of "Godspell”.  She was part of the first two Virtual Choirs by Eric Whitacre, and had the incredible opportunity to work as a background singer for Marilyn James.  Kenya also performed with the Colorado Mass Choir, recording “Glad About It”.  She continues to master her craft by working with the Nashville Jazz Workshop, and performing live throughout the Nashville and Detroit areas.

Kenya Taylor is an unforgettable talent, and her audiences will appreciate the opportunity they have to hear her perform!
