Bio

BIOGRAPHY KERUNA
Keruna is a vocal ensemble from Belgium, founded in 2010. Six women who celebrate life through song: Anja Desmet, Veva Gerard, Marijke Goossens, Katrien Melis, Mieke Polfliet and Patricia Van Cutsem.
They met each other along the diverse musical paths that they were pursuing: at a sound healer course, ‘community music’ circles of song and voice workshops.
The African traditional ‘Aye Kerunene’ is their anthem. This song also inspired the choice of the name for the ensemble: Keruna.
Besides their engagement with Keruna, the group members have different creative and professional backgrounds such as sound healing, storytelling, ritual ceremony facilitation and of course singing. This unique blend of experience and personalities adds a surprising dimension to their musical performance.
Keruna offers concerts, whether on stage, in-company or at home, and performs at ceremonies and celebrations.
Keruna’s repertoire taps from a wide source of traditional songs from all over the world, because those are the quintessential carriers of the universal human nature. All songs are carefully selected and then personalised into new polyphonic arrangements which give them this typical Keruna sound.
Beyond any genre
Although the six natural voices are definitely the leading instrument in their music, Keruna occasionally adorns the vocal arrangements with ethnical instruments such as shaman drum, harmonium, native flute and singing bowls to create a specific sonic atmosphere that reaches beyond any conventional music genre.
It is effectively a cross-over between many genres: folk, world music, roots music or even choral music.
2011: Women’s Voices I
Quite soon after the kick-off, Keruna decided to record their favorite songs on a cd. ‘Women’s Voices I’ was the first album, released in November 2011.
2012: TERRA
Early 2012, Keruna launched a new concert programme ‘TERRA’.
This was mainly inspired by a growing concern for global climate change. Many songs from the Keruna repertoire originate from cultures threatened by this change.

Keruna felt the need to support a global ‘wakeup call’ by developing a concert programme that could be performed anywhere around the globe. For the essence of TERRA is truly global: it is a collection of songs, sacred chants and melodies from all over the world, with one common denominator: the love and concern for planet Earth.

2012 Women’s Voices II

During the summer of 2012, Keruna recorded a second album: ‘Women’s Voices II’. The first track on this album, ‘Ilumina’, is taken from TERRA and it sets the tone for the whole album.
