"Debut from BU music majors"

Kevin Mohl and the Burning Sensation, the popular alt-rock band thatÕs been lighting up local venues this past year, are releasing their debut album The Adventures of Kevin Mohl and the Burning Sensation. Each track showcases a different aspect of their eccentric musical background.

Comprised of various music majors from IndianapolisÕ Butler University, each musician offers a distinctive sound that bleeds throughout this flawless and professionally mixed album.

Guitarist Kevin Mohl has an intimate style of performance that is as personal as Bob Dylan but as rockinÕ out as Jimi Hendrix. The same goes for the rest of the band, from Craig WolkaÕs walking bass lines in songs like ÒRideÓ to the rain pattering solo keyboards of Michael Douce in the infectious and sultry ÒDevil in Disguise.Ó Josh Lingenfelter cleans up with his cool drumming. Dan Walt came to the band as a lead guitar player but proved more comfortable on violin. Hooked into an electric guitar amp, WaltÕs fiddle penetrates through the pop songs like a needle, giving them a bluegrass, dust bowl-era feel. The albumÕs second track, ÒJack and Jill,Ó is the best example of how all these talents make for a fast-paced, world music beat with elements of country and rock.

MohlÕs music (see www.kmandthebs.com) is what itÕs like to be young, careless and drunk and the sobering sensation that weÕve all experienced as we approach adulthood. Although a majority of the songs appeal to college students who escape from their weekday stress with weekend binges, thereÕs a worldly appreciation for all types of slackers in between the lines. - NUVO Newsweekly

"Kelly McKay"

The name of the band caught my attention but their music has definitely made me a fan. Every song on the "Adventures of Kevin Mohl and The Burning Sensation" CD is incredible. It's a bit of jazz infused rock with tons of humor and creativity thrown in. - 99.5 WZPL

"MPMF"

With a membership that boasts an abundance of college-trained musicians, it shouldn't come as any surprise that Kevin Mohl and the Burning Sensation are pretty brainy for a Pop band. Blending their Jazz/World/Funk schooling with their brilliantly intuitive Pop chops has earned Mohl and the Sensation opening slots with John Mayer, Maroon 5, Stroke 9 and Coldplay. - Cincinnati City Beat

"Ellen Kizik"

"If their live shows outdoors on the Atherton steps are anything like their live indoor ones, this band has potential--especially at appealing to the college-aged crowd. " - Dawgnet

"Paul F.P. Pogue"

The guys from Kevin Mohl and the Burning Sensation fuse funky, jazzy and percussive sounds for
their style. - Intake Weekly

"Wayne Bertsch"

"They were a tight and polished live act. Catchy sing-a-long lyrics, groove heavy bass, tight drums, and jangly keyboards. I got to discover a great band!" - Nuvo Newsweekly

"Student Band Excels in MTV Competition"

Butler’s own Kevin Mohl and the Burning Sensation has been on its way to bursting out of the “Butler bubble’ for some time, but now it’s official with the band’s recent inclusion among the Top 50 college bands in the U.S. in mtvU’s “Best Music on Campus” contest.

The band was selected by mtvU staff and music industry leaders from a field of hundreds of entries from across the country. The group, and its music—which can be described as Dave Matthews Band meets Barenaked Ladies, was then featured along with the rest of the Top 50 on the contest Web site, which received hundreds of thousands of visits.

Drummer Joshua Lingenfelter says the band entered the mtvU contest on a whim. They saw a Web ad soliciting submissions and thought, “Let’s just enter and see if anything happens.” When the e-mail notification that they had made the Top 50 arrived, it caused quite a shock.

“I freaked out,” he recalls.

Though this is certainly the broadest national exposure the band has enjoyed, it has been making steady regional progress since forming in 2003. Kevin Mohl, who studied music at Butler, founded the band, which has featured Butler students from the beginning. Some have moved on and the band now includes Michael Douce `05, Dan Walt `05, Joshua Lingenfelter `03 and Craig Wolka `06.

The mtvU experience is not the band’s first brush with the big time. The Burning Sensation has performed locally with the likes of Grammy winners Maroon 5, John Mayer and Coldplay. The band regularly plays in the Indianapolis area and has appeared throughout the Midwest.

All this with only one member, Mohl, dedicated full time to the band. Everyone else has a “day job” and finds time for the band beyond that. Lingenfelter credits their Butler experiences for making that possible. “Everyone in the band is a trained musician, so it’s relatively easy for us to play without a lot of rehearsal,” he says.

Some of the production for the band’s CD, “The Adventures of Kevin Mohl and the Burning Sensation,” which has sold more than 1,000 copies on iTunes, was completed as part of a Media Arts independent study class with lecturer Cutler Armstrong. The band’s video was produced with help from media arts producer, John Servizzi.

More information about the band is available at its Web site, www.kmandthebs.com.

Bio

Blending acoustic pop with four chord rock and adding a little lyrical flair to the mix has created a sound unique to Kevin Mohl. After two years of touring and a critically acclaimed debut album, Kevin Mohl has developed into one of the Midwest's most "passionate" and "entertaining" live acts. Kevin and his band have performed with national acts Stroke 9, Bottle of Justus, Mat Kearney, Maroon 5, Sister Hazel, Todd Carey and John Mayer. Kevin was recently named one of the Top 50 Colleges Acts in the US by MTVu.
