"Kevin O'Neal & Patrice Quinn at the MMAC Bloomfield, NJ"

KEVIN O'NEAL/TRICKY DILEMMA @ THE MAAC Bloomfied, NJ 6/27/09

On a night that was described by Bruce Mack as 'Duke Ellington meets Frank Zappa', Kevin O'Neal (accompanied by Patrice Quinn) and tribal electro trio Tricky Dilemma, played the The Multi-Media Arts Center in Bloomfield, New Jersey.

The MAAC, as its called, is a facilty that has a concert hall, a cabaret space that can also be used to show films, a cafe for all of you coffee drinkers, art gallery, and broadcast capabilites. Its still in work in progress, but has the potential to being the new home for the experimental, avant garde and the mainstream all at the same time. Its location is also perfectly for those in the Jersey/Philly area who want to remain in the state but also for those in New York City who want to get removed from city craziness for the night.

I managed to make through commuter hell (MAJOR delays on PATH train) to catch the talil end of Kevin O' Neal's set. Best known for his work in the seminal Black Rock band The Bus Boys, O'Neal performed a beautifully understated set on piano with the beautiful and talented Patrice on vocals. 'Dedication' was a moving, wordless piece that went out to Michael Jakckson (and MACC owner, Chuck Brownley). A significant jazz & blues influence was the thread on a stunning run of standards including 'I Loves You Porgy' and a great new song, 'Expectation' ended the set that literally had everyone, performers included, dancing in the aisles. I was really bummed that I didn't catch the entire set, but I'm looking forward to hearing new recordings from Kevin & Patrice.

BIO

Kevin & Patrice love making music together. Their sounds are sophisticated, original and moving.
Kevin hails from Los Angeles and Patrice from New York City: Sunset & Harlem.

Kevin & Patrice have been spreading their “Whole New Way of Thinking” nationally and abroad, with standing room crowds in Los Angeles, New York City, Havana and other fine cities. They front a stunningly beautiful, swinging band, featuring outstanding original compositions and championing the compositional works of the great American masters Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk.

Patrice Quinn is art and soul. In addition to being a fine vocalist, she is also a well decorated actress, featured in film, stage and television, including “NYPD Blue”, “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman”, “Melrose Place” and John Patrick Shanley’s play “Doubt.”

Kevin O’Neal is a Grammy winning bassist, specializing in acoustic music and multi-media productions, who has mastered the piano and is a brilliant writer, arranger, vocalist, director and composer known nationally and internationally for his innovation with improvisational based music. He has lent his talents, in concert and recording settings to diverse artists including Tracy Chapman, Barry Harris, Kevin Toney, Nnenna Freelon, Outkast, Barbara Morrison, Stix Hooper, Brian Setzer, Hank Crawford, Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis Jr. and many others.

Kevin also leads and directs Radiant Voices, a vocal ensemble specializing in original jazz influenced music.

Kevin composed the music and score for the musical “North On South Central” and Radiant Voices are the featured performers on the original soundtrack CD. Kevin also composed the music for the Walter Mosley penned 9 hour radio drama “Black Betty”, sponsored by KCRW. Kevin has composed for and appeared in the pace setting films “48 Hours”, “Ghostbusters” and “Devil with the Blue Dress.”

Both Kevin and Patrice are offspring of fine parents, who have been and are very active in humanities and human rights. This is reflected in Kevin & Patrice’s commitment to young people, with Patrice serving as an instructor of acting at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and Kevin as Associate Professor of music at Santa Monica College, specializing in Jazz and American culture: not the standard how and when music is created, but why. Kevin’s class has become the most popular course in the department, with international students coming from all over the world to attend the course.

The future is bright for Kevin & Patrice, as they move forward with two new music films in the works; a short film featuring the music of Thelonious Monk and a feature length film with full length, original music performances. They are also finishing an album dedicated to Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington.

Kevin & Patrice lead the way for innovation, culture, class and fun: A Whole New Way of Thinking!
