Bio

Khoi is Vietnam's first foray into electronic music, joining the dots from dubstep to dance she puts the ants in your pants.

Saigon Boom Boom, Khoi's debut EDM album, is the first music of its kind to come out of Vietnam. Traversing a wide range of styles, Khoi seamlessly meshes bilingual vocals with Eastern and Western melodies to styles as diverse as dubstep to pop dance. A cheeky reference to love making and electronic beats, Saigon Boom Boom explores contradictions in contemporary society, contradictions as diverse as the music styles themselves. The album marks a point of creative and stylistic evolution for Khoi who previously composed and sung acoustic, folk and acid rock.

Grammy Award recognised producer, Mark Tarsia, who mastered the album, says "She's got that 80's Madonna swagger, self-secure woman, I know who I am vibe." Ken Lewis, who previously produced for Eminem and Kanye West, also was also involved in the production of the album.

In a pre-launch concert video, Khoi also establishes herself as an adept performance artist as she tears apart the stage to an elaborate laser show in Vietnams only super club, The Orient (Phuong Dong).

Khoi explains, 'I started writing about what I was seeing, both here in Vietnam and overseas more generally. About youth culture, self-love, exhibitionism, and gender relations. It's also about expression, sexualities and alternative ways of being a woman that don't conform to prevailing social norms. EDM seemed like a good soundtrack to these social currents.'

In communist Vietnam, Khoi is known for her outspoken critiques of conservative social norms and male patriarchy and for refusing to wear a bra in public, regularly dividing the readership of nation-wide newspapers and tabloids.  Khoi has also drawn national attention and criticism on a number of occasions for kissing in public, an act that is still considered morally reprehensible by the nations media.

Prior to storming onto the dance floor, Khoi (aka Mai Khoi) composed and sung acid rock, blues, folk and alternative. Singer, songwriter, musician, director and producer, Mai Khoi won Song of the Year Award and the Vietnam Television Album of the Year Award in 2010 for her album Made in Mai Khoi.

Khoi has been singing for 12 years and has toured throughout Vietnam and the United States. She has collaborated extensively with both local and foreign musicians and sings in both English and Vietnamese. Khoi has released four albums: Hoa Dai (2007), Mai Khoi sings Le Cat Trong Ly (2008), Mai Khoi sings Quoc Bao (2009) and Made in Mai Khoi (2010).
