"Kid Ego 'Powerplay' Review"

30/10/2006

Its a cold, wet September evening and the guys from the UK's largest independent Rock Magazine, 'Powerplay', have made the long journey up to York to see Kid Ego put on a show that would blow them away........

Kid Ego
The Grand Opera House, York
September 20 2006

Hmm reference points? How about when Hanoi Rocks stormed the Marquee Club in the 80s? How about when some snarling youths shouted something about ‘God Save The Queen’ and rounded it off with some ‘fascist regime’ banter? Erm…has that built expectation? Fucking good because now I have my class’s attention I’d like to introduce Kid Ego, the only up-and-coming classic rock noise makers you need to know about right now!

With amps plugged in, drums set to stun and mic’s swinging, the boys rip straight into album opener ‘Ignite The Tide’. In moments the theatre seats are abandoned and the crowd are bouncing to the beat of Kid Ego. Ushers stand up, security goes on red alert and a strong home crowd rock out. The madness continues through ‘Till I Die’ and the bands ode to magic mushrooms ‘Magic Candy’ as Zakk Tearaway and his renegade rockers step up the show gear by gear. Sweat runs down the gold leaf Art Nouveau furnishings, drum skins are smashed, riffs are shot and bass strings are bent every which way till loose.

Fan favourite ‘Flirtin With Suicide’ brings the first crescendo of audience rapture while six stringer Birdy’s solo brings the house to its knees. Then as the opening bars of ‘Lady Conniver’ ring out rock noise meets sexiness as The Glitter Kittens shake their arse to the boy’s album anthem. Everyone needs rock ‘n’ roll like this in their life.

The band’s new sex poem ‘One In The Pink’ opens more than girls hearts as the bands signature melody, rock craftsmanship and sexy songwriting abilities almost turns the red carpets blue. More tales of lust and lunacy follow as ‘Heartbreak Hooker’ brings back the sleaze and the sexy dancers. The song rouses sing-a-longs in homage to laying Amsterdam hookers, biting tit and drinking beer but there is more in store as the finale to the night’s show includes bass heavy rock song ‘Hellshot’ and another newbie ‘Forbidden Tattoo’.

And that is it ladies and gents. For one night in September York played host to the bright lights of Sunset Strip, the rock abandon of punk-rock mixed with 80s vocals and the future of rock in the UK. Fives lads from North Yorkshire dipping into the old school to teach the new school of pretenders that hard rock shot from behind glittery drum kits, leather and big hair is the future. Its taken only two years to get to where they are now and as the band continue to push limits, break hearts and slay audiences like this…world domination is the only logical next step.

Power Points – 9

Set list – Ignite The Tide, Till I Die, Magic Candy, Flirtin With Suicide, Lady Conniver, UFO, Unbreakable, Deathrow, One In The Pink, Heartbreak Hooker, Hellshot, Forbidden Tattoo.

"Mayhem at the Manor.....Kid Ego Style!"

01/11/06

It seems that the Kid Ego boys don't just want to take over your stereo........they want to take over your TV as well!

Britain's fastest growing rock band are set to receive even more exposure by starring in a TV documentary, filmed while they were on their sell out 2006 UK Tour. The programme features the Kid Ego on the Nottingham leg of the Tour, capturing their musical master-class at the gig, and then the rock and roll mayhem which occurs back at their hotel......which just happens to be a Country Manor B&B run by two eccentric aristocrats!

Using footage from both a film crew and CCTV, 'Mayhem at the Manor' is due to be screened in Canada on 1st November 2006, and in the UK on 20th November 2006 on The Discovery Channel.

With further TV offers coming in, Kid Ego will surely find that TV domination isn't too far away.

(Press releases detailing all future television appearances by Kid Ego will be published in the band's EPK). - ABF Musician Management

"The Ego Dish the Dirt to Sugarbuzz Magazine"

30/07/2006

With Crufest 2006 about to go down as a massive notch on Kid Ego's proverbial bedpost, Sugarbuzz Magazine managed to grab an interview with the boys just before they took to the famous stage....

"Spotlight On........Kid Ego, July 15 2006
Interview By Amie Dodd (SugarBuzz Hollywood) for SugarBuzz Magazine

Zakk (vocals), Rookie (bass) and Birdy (lead guitar) of England’s KID EGO dish the dirt on Metal, MySpace and Musical Mayhem at this year’s Cruefest.

They’ve only been together for less than 2 years, but KID EGO are already taking England by a storm, and looking to do the same here in the States. With their debut album “Ignite the Tide” out, and plenty of touring in the future, this is definitely a band you’ll be hearing more about. Yeah, they’re THAT good.

If you were at this year’s Cruefest at the Whisky in Los Angeles, you already know by now they blew everyone else off the stage - best band there this year, hands down! And I was lucky enough to score an interview with them before they took the stage. Meet KID EGO...

"Kid Ego Set Fire to HardRockHouse.com"

16/08/2006

The house is on fire, the house is on fire! Calm down, there is no need to dial 999......its only Kid Ego lighting the rock n' roll touch paper at HardRockHouse.com. The rock and metal website decided it was time to review Kid Ego's 'Ignite The Tide'.......but it seems that they weren't fully prepared for the musical firestorm that hit them.....

Kid Ego - Ignite The Tide
Rating - 9/10

Review by Don Gibbs

“Kid Ego” is a group of young lads who are based in and around the York area and were formed by Zakk (lead vocals) in 2004. The band is made up by Zakk, Birdy (lead guitars and vocals), Phil (guitars and vocals), Rookie (bass and vocals) and Nicky (drums).

Now, as my regular readers and fan base may have already realised , (yes, all 3 of them), I do like to speak my mind when doing album reviews and believe in total free speech so that I can hopefully put across a totally unbiased opinion. So, when I was given “Ignite the Tide” to review and asked to “go easy on them” it was like waving a red rag to a bull (and other analogies that I wont go in to at this stage). This release would obviously require A LOT of my undivided attention before I could even consider putting pen to paper (or even fingers to keys!)

I have played this album almost constantly since being given it last week and to be totally honest with you, I don’t know where to start. I think that I can probably sum up this album by slightly re-hashing a well know saying from a well know British historical figure – “Never, in the history of ‘British Rock’ has so much been owed, by so many, to so few”. These guys are the dog’s bollocks.

Right from the first few bars of “Ignite the Tide”; to the closing notes of “Hellshot”, these guys treat your ears to a veritable audio-fest of pure rock and sleaze. It is very refreshing to find a group of young men who have mastered the art of musicianship so well at such an early stage in their career. This release is probably one of the best, if not the best, glam rock release that I have heard in many a year and is head and shoulders above anything ever released from the likes of “The Darkness” etc. Kid Ego make no secret of being influenced by stadium rock, and it shows in the catchy, raw, mean rock sound they push out that is backed up by strong chorus’, powerful melodic vocals and immense riffs. They are very reminiscent of early days Def Leppard (when they were good) mixed in with some L.A Guns and a touch of Crue attitude.

What I like about this release is that there is always something going on and you never get a pause in the music that makes you wonder what is coming next. If the guitars fade out then the drums crank it up full pelt, when the drumming peters off the guitars kick in with killer solos. Add to that vocals that are rife with talent and attitude and you have brought together a mix that is something special.

My favourite tracks are “Ignite the Tide”, “Lady Conniver” (I defy anyone not to join in the chorus) and “Till I Die” for their sheer Rock sound, then “UFO” which is the mandatory slower track which allows Zakk sing his heart out and show a mellower sound to his voice. Lastly, “Long Time Runnin” is the MUST PLAY song at live shows. This is the song which will have everyone joining in, screaming along with the chorus while flailing hair in every direction. (It almost makes me want to grow my hair just so I can join in!)

These guys have got what it takes to succeed and this release is a winner. I have already put it in my list of top albums of the year. This is a MUST GET release and I recommend that you buy it today. Who knows, maybe “Kid Ego” will be the band that puts the name of our country back to the top of the pecking order of Rock!

"Sleazeroxx.. Kid Ego are number 1"

3rd January 2007

Canadian rock legend Skid @ www.Sleazeroxx.com Puts "Ignite The Tide" as his number one for 2006!

TOP TEN ALBUMS OF 2006:

Another year has kicked the bucket and all that is left are memories of endless hours of work, drink, and music. Out of the hundreds of albums I got sent and bought throughout the year, once again I will make a list of the ones that spent the most time spinning around in my CD player. I'll also stick to creating my list out of full-length albums of new material (EPs, live releases and re-issues are getting the shaft again) that had the biggest impact on me this year.

As 2006 progressed I was starting to get worried that I would even be able to come up with ten albums that really kicked my ass, but then it seemed like everyone was releasing CDs in the later part of the year and it was getting hard to keep up. It also became harder and harder to narrow this list down to only 10 deserving albums, but a guy has to stop somewhere. 2006 turned out to be an incredible year for music, and these are the ones that stood out for me.

1.KID EGO - Ignite The Tide
CD Review -
Ignite The Tide was the musical equivalent of being caught in a tsunami, except you didn't end up thrown onto the beach with a star fish lodged in your throat when things were over. For a young band that only formed in 2004, these English rockers kept the listener on their toes as something was ALWAYS happening - and as a result Kid Ego managed to out-gun everyone in 2006.

"Powerplay Magazine - 'Ignite The Tide' Album Review"

12/06/2006

The Ego boys have gone and done it again.......this time with rock magazine 'Powerplay' reviewing their debut album 'Ignite The Tide'. This is what they had to say...

"The sleaze is rife again and I’m one of the many motherfuckers out there who is basking in the sudden mass re-emergence. But who is leading the independent pack for me? York-based piston charged rock ‘n’ rollers Kid Ego, if you must know, a band who have been shooting A-class rock tunes from behind aviator glasses, leather pants and leopard skin on the local scene for a while now. Having penetrated the rest of the country in recent months, the band have just unleashed their debut album “Ignite The Tide” and fuck me, I love it.

Kid Ego are glam-grime’ they are cigarettes and lipstick, they are engine fire and glitter. “Flirtin’ With Suicide” is a quintessential old school punk rock ‘n’ roll anthem with stomping drums, charged rhythm and lead guitars as focal point. Zakk croons his way through lyrics such as “Rock stars dying, everyone is flirting with suicide, chicks always lying….”. “Till I Die” continues in the same vein with hooks and lyrics that once learned thoroughly would have the most hearty sleaze fan on his knees playing air guitar and screaming along.

To me, this is where the Crue were in the eighties. They were four hard rocking motherfuckers who enjoyed slaying crowds and making music. The Ego may be a five-piece but that’s the only difference. The rollercoaster ride continues as the band work through personal fave “Lady Conniver”. I heard this track a while back and every moment since has been leading up to hearing the Kid Ego album. “Lady Conniver” has single quality written all over the guitar licks, the drum rolls and the vocals.

The band’s choruses are constantly on key with pure party rock ‘n’ roll. From first listen, you want to sing along to every word, something which leads to frustration when you realise you don’t know the words yet. “Sweet Bectoria” spits at a long lost lover who has long been rejected, while on “UFO” the band attempt their first ballad angled rock song. The acoustic guitar is pulled in as the band close the album with a raw laid-bare anthem. Lighter-in-the-air moments for sure then, but even this track doesn’t escape a little bit of electric guitar wielding.

I was in short pants when Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, Ratt, Aerosmith, Guns N Roses et al were performing sleaze rock ‘n’ roll anthems first time round and even though I’ve managed to see most of ‘em in recent times I fail to remember a time where I was camped in a backstreet rock hole pumping my fist to these sort of songs. And now that spirit is trapped within inches of disc. Vocalist Zakk is parts Tyler and Weiland with his own cockiness and spirit added, bassist Rookie is northern England’s Nikki Sixx incarnate, Birdy and Phil six string with the best of ‘em, while Nikki on drums thumps those skins with the energy of Adler and Kramer. Accomplished all the way if you ask me, Kid Ego is full throttle old school punk-sleaze balls-out rock ‘n’ roll.

POWERPOINTS: 9 out of 10

Review by Lee Benecke"

So with another 'A-star' review for 'Ignite The Tide', Kid Ego are getting the praise they surely deserve. No doubt there will be a lot more to come.

"Headbanger's Basement Goes Wild For 'Ignite The Tide'"

03/07/2006

Having been the first to air Kid Ego's music in the USA last October, Darrel Michaels, legendary host of the 'Headbangers Basement' show, has now given the boys debut album 'Ignite The Tide' the once over. This is what he thought:

"I’ve been a Kid Ego fan since I spotted their profile on Myspace.com and checked out a couple of their tracks including Lady Conniver which is also included on their debut Ignite The Tide. Kid Ego have been getting a lot of attention lately and one listen to debut and it’s easy to see why. There are wide range of influences included on Ignite The Tide including Skid Row which for me really came across in the track Heartbreak Hooker. Normally on a debut you can usually find fault, but that’s just not the case with Ignite The Tide, everything here just works. If you’ve been hungry for an album with the staying power of Appetite For Destruction you don’t have to look any further than Ignite The Tide, easily one of the best of 2006 so far".

What can you say......another great review for Kid Ego's debut album. Platinum disc anyone?

If you’ve been hungry for an album with the staying power of Appetite For Destruction you don’t have to look any further than Ignite The Tide, easily one of the best of 2006 so far".

As a great man once said "You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!". Well it seems Kid Ego have gone one better and blown the whole roof off Italian rockzine 'Cathouse' with their album 'Ignite The Tide'. The album was reviewed by AngelDevil........can anyone speak Italian?

“Kid Ego” stampatevelo in testa. La band della città dei vichinghi è arrivata e vi catapulterà con il suo Ignite The Tide ! For the non-Itailan speakers out there, the review roughly translates as a massive 'thumbs up' for 'Ignite The Tide'. With praise like that, surely we can expect a sequel at some point in the future.

Bio

Kid Ego. Biography

Born from a shared packet of cigarettes and a bottle of cheap cider, Kid Ego are the UK’s answer to the glory days of high-octane rock and roll.

Think classic UK punk rock riffs shot from behind aviator sunglasses, leather and leopard print. Think dirt and glam, think cigarettes and lipstick, think engine fire and glitter. Think ‘yeah at last a young band not frightened of throwing a few bombs into what is now a very predictable music business’ and you’re there!

Kid Ego is the brainchild of cocksure vocalist and songwriter Zakk and 80s rock fanatic Rookie after a chance meeting at the annual Leeds music festival. With a vision to bring back great rock ‘n’ roll they soon recruited metal riff maker Phil on rhythm and the then 15-year-old tubthumper Nickky on drums. Then a very persuasive Zakk hijacked 70’s rock influenced local guitar hero Birdy and the line-up was complete. After months of hard graft, July 2005 saw the young five-piece roll their rock show out of the rehearsal rooms and into the bright lights.

Selling out their local York venues, the band quickly caught the attention of the local media and 3 months after their first gig they received a call from The Wildhearts management and an invitation to open the “Rock In The Castle” festival. This turned out to be the bands first big break. The BBC reviewed the performance… “Kid Ego took to the stage with the kind of confidence and swagger normally associated with the headliners. Best band for me”

UK tours followed and as news about their sensational live performances spread record companies, festival organisers and media took a keen interest. In April
2006 the band celebrated a newly inked record deal with a co headline performance with Tokyo Dragons at the 13th Birthday Bash, 4000 bikers roared for an encore.

The Ego boys crammed the UK dates in before travelling to the US for a Summer East Coast Tour followed by an amazing kick ass show at Cruefest Hollywood. Then back to the UK and a Main stage appearance at the cult Wickerman Festival where they performed with such legends as The Sensational Alex Harvey band, New model Army and Marky Ramone. They ignited the main stage and this before they had released anything!

In September 2006, the band unleashed their debut album “Ignite The Tide” through independent rock label Rock Revolution. Under the guidance of producer Will Jackson (Kaiser Chiefs, The Music) the lads nailed twelve stonewall classics combining the ferocity of heavy punk and the power of 80s rock vocals. Whether it’s the guitar licks and drum rolls of “Lady Conniver”, the rock stomp of “Till I Die”, the sing-a-long tales of lust and lunacy in “Heartbreak Hooker” or the bass heartbeat of alcohol fuelled anthem “Hellshot”, the album is on fire from first note to last cymbal crash. And there is more to come as the band are already preparing for the follow up showcasing new track “One In The Pink” at recent live shows.

On the road, the boys have kick-started their musical mission to chase dreams, break hearts and smear lipstick wherever they go. In just over one year they’ve managed to high jump the toilet tour and settle into an intensive touring schedule packing out some of the most prestigious rock venues in the UK.

And now they’re looking to 2007 with a 30 date US roadtrip booked in for Feb/March, more festivals across the year, then gigs, gigs and more gigs. Oh and yeah they’ve already written a second album! As they play hard and party harder, it definitely seems the future of hard rock belongs to one band…Kid Ego.
