Bio

So why does some whiz kid guitarist and an old folkie get together and form an act? "we don't know and we don't care".

James and Ricky Joe share some similar tastes in music and a few common recreational activities. The connecting thread though is that they're both hippies - just from different generations. When they play together that Woodstock spirit seems to be floating in the air around them. "We really clicked when we first jammed and now we've just kinda learned to harness that supernatural thingy that happens when we start feeding off each other. The audiences really get off on it."

James MacKay has been active in the Oakville Ontario music scene most of his life in a number of bands from metal to Chicago blues to psychedelic porno funk. He has played lead guitar and contributed original music for The Hallucinations and The Crosstown Blues Band.

Ricky Joe Vella wrote for children in his early days, adding “Mirror Mirror on the Wall” to a campy version of the Snow White musical. “Save the Trees” was written for a school choir and performed on Earth Day. In the late 1980’s, he became a recluse singer/songwriter, writing and playing primarily for sanity maintenance.

Ok. The sound is simple; one electric guitar and one acoustic guitar -a fusion of old hippie and young hippie music. Ricky Joe’s well-written songs are mainly folk/rock/blues based with a lot of twists and the Kid’s driving melodic lead guitar transcends these songs to yet another level. The result is a sophisticated sound induced with raw emotion and transforming moods. And there’s usually plenty of room for freeform stylizing --- this is when the magic happens.

Most Sunday’s James and Ricky Joe host a jam at The Moonshine Café – a place they have become very familiar with as they also play there many a Friday night with The GCDC Gang.

James and Ricky Joe have also performed opening sets recently for Mad Violet, Steve Payne, Ric and the Biscuits, Mark Stafford and Carolyna Loveless.
