Kid Twist (2004)

Feeling a bit camera shy

Kid Twist is a 19 year old Canadian rapper. To make matters worse, he’s also white; so much so that his skin has been described as “translucent”. The one piece of good news is that he’s not from the suburbs – he was raised in the west end of Toronto.

Twist got his start in the rap game writing parodies of Eminem’s “My Name Is” for high school projects, and soon moved on to making original and very humour-oriented songs. After hooking up with Juno-nominated producer Steve Wingfield in 2004, he put out his first serious effort: a self-titled, five song EP. The disc was well-received by local audiences and college radio stations, and the Kid got his first taste of the music industry. Fed up with the egos in the business, and frustrated by his lack of control over his own art, he decided that the commercial rap scene was not for him.

Since coming to this realization, Twist has spent the past year and a half honing his style and searching for his place in the saturated hip-hop market. He has now emerged with a collection of fresh and creative material that sounds like the antithesis of his over-produced and poppy earlier work. A strong supporter of the DIY indie ideology, he plays the multiple roles of lyricist, performer, producer, and engineer. He writes every lyric, programs every drum stroke, and records and mixes it all in his parents’ basement.

Kid Twist is currently working on a mixtape, which will be finished by the end of January, and his first full-length album, slated for a May release. His goal is to use hip-hop to speak from the perspective of a middle-class Canadian, rather than simply emulating the idioms of his American counterparts.

In addition to making music, Twist also enjoys typing out Internet biographies of himself in the third person.
