"Kidz in Space @ CMJ New Zealand Showcase / Red Bull Space, NY – October 20,2009"

Broken hearted that (le) Poission Rouge cut CMJ passes off at 50 for the Atlas Sound/Broadcast show, the next best bet of the night was the New Zealand showcase at the Red Bull Space. What does New Zealand have to offer besides Flight of the Conchords? Good question. Apparently the answer is “a lot.” Catching the final act of the night, Kidz in Space, was an unexpected treat. The rap duo from the rural parts of New Zealand blew everyone away who decided to check it out because of the free food and drinks.

Kidz in Space were at the top of their game during their live set, that would put most American rappers to shame. I must admit, rap isn’t exactly my area of expertise, but I certainly enjoyed what these guys did live. Their songs weren’t flashy, and neither were they. Delivering 45 minutes of honest and intriguing lines, the group even did an impressive remix of Phoenix’s “1901,” which grabbed everyone’s attention. Isn’t discovering the unexpected what CMJ is all about?

"Jamie Does CMJ, Day One"

I decided to start my first night of CMJ off with a local band I'd seen before and liked, but which had never really managed to garner the buzz they deserve: The Unsacred Hearts. Unfortunately, their showcase was running late so I saw Saadi instead before running off to try to catch Die! Die! Die! This band was a little too mellow for my taste but it was a pleasant, female-fronted affair with pop harmonies and a vaguely tropical flavor to some songs. Extra points for using a xylophone and a triangle. The one song that stuck in my head afterwards was the last one, a Dylan (via Joan Baez) cover, "Daddy, You Been on My Mind." Singer Saadi Al Bashra (ex-Looker) used live loops of her own voice to make pretty, haunting harmonies with herself.

Next I hoofed it over to the Red Bull Space to try to see Die! Die! Die! However, I had not accounted for the fact that I was trying to see a band in a douchey walk-in commercial with free everything, so I ended up hearing their entire set all muffled as I stood in line. Boo-urns! Once I got inside, though, I figured I should see who was next. While I waited, I succumbed to the disgusting temptation and drank a complimentary Redbull and vodka, which made me feel disgustingly, frighteningly good.

The next band turned out to be a fun rap group called Kidz in Space. They were able to get the stupid crowd at least somewhat into it, which was impressive, and I adored their refrain of "fit me on your dance card...your dance card." Finally some gentlemanly behavior in hip-hop!

Bio

The legend began when a trio of ferociously talented artists from different backgrounds, mysteriously crossed paths and formed… Kidz In Space.
Re-entering the Earth’s atmosphere, the three spacekateers found that they now shared an extraterrestrial bond that enabled them to make truly out of this world music.

First witnessed by an earthling audience at the 2009 Big Day Out they swiftly reached stratospheric levels with their show-stealing performances at bFM’s prestigious Fancy New Bands Showcase and Ohakune’s Mardi Gras. Having commenced their conquest, the cosmonautical cut crusaders are entering a new phase, with the blast off of their premier single ‘Downtime’ followed by an EP release.
Kidz In Space has been fortunate enough to perform at the CMJ music Festival in New York to some rave reviews.
2010 looks to be a massive year for this galactic trio with Big Day Out 2010, Splore 2010 and Wellington Beer Festival 2010 on the agenda.
The EP will be supported by 3 videos from the laboratory of K.I.S. visual collaborator Tim Van Dammen, beginning with ‘Ocean Of Drugs’, which is on screens now.

The 7-track debut Kidz In Space EP, Episode 001: Chasing Hayley; is available now to the digital world.
